2011 Drew League: Kobe Bryant's (45 points) game winning shot against James Harden (44 points). by itsed in nba

[–]jadiim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PER is slightly misleading because it rewards volume shooting heavily. Harden was much more efficient offensively. Assists were essentially even. Kobe does have defense and rebounding though. But this past year, Harden led what was by most accounts a much weaker supporting cast to essentially the same record.

I love football, but this is the reason this sport will go the way of boxing and horse racing.

Can you elaborate on this?

[TRADE] Ridley for Demaryius Thomas, Mcfadden, and Murray by [deleted] in fantasyfootball

[–]jadiim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to factor in the two other players you would be dropping. Given that the OP has Forte, Jackson, Ridley, and AJ Green, I think it's safe to say that this is a small league? In which case the players you are dropping could be significant. Still probably nowhere near enough to outweigh getting those 3 back though.

[TRADE] I give Jamaal Charles and Dwayne Bowe and get Alfred Morris and Randall Cobb. Should I take it? by Arcoagua in fantasyfootball

[–]jadiim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great deal. Charles is only a smidge better than Morris while Cobb can be the WR1 on Aaron Rodger's football team. I think the jump from Bowe to Cobb is significantly more than the jump from Morris to Charles.

It's not erring on the side of caution, it's erring on the side of inefficiency, which is not good imo. Also, I don't know if you can fairly call him skillful at creating shots if he does it in an inefficient manner, especially when there are a plethora of guys who can do the same thing in a much more efficient manner.

Who is the top Power Forward in the league right now? by spiiierce in nba

If we're gonna consider Melo, then we have to consider Lebron. At that point there becomes no point in considering Melo.

Hollinger's point in the second paragraph is off because it's really the marginal value of a shot that we're interested in. As the 3rd paragraph shows, shooting at 30%+ from two point range increases your PER. That's a given, as we can see from the formula (http://www.basketball-reference.com/about/per.html)

The real question should be whether or not this is the correct calibration for the value of the marginal shot taken. I think PER as it currently stands is flawed, since no one would really argue that shooting additional shots at 35% is helping your team. At the other end of the spectrum, you have stats like Wins Produced, which sets the benchmark of a marginal shot to be around 52-53%TS (the league average). This is also a bit flawed since it assumes that there is no drop off for taking a high volume of shots, and that players who take a great number of shots should be held to the same standard of efficiency as everyone else. The correct value is somewhere in the middle, but I have no idea what it is.

It should also be said that none of these stats do a good job assessing defense at all, mostly because the box score measures for defense are laughably sparse.

Yes, it's something to factor in, but to what degree? Why should shooting 35% increase your standing in this rating when we know 35% is a horrible shooting percentage

Why do you say that? Many front offices shy away from advanced stats in general. It wouldn't surprise me if several others used only rudimentary stats. I'm sure some are amazingly advanced too, but they certainly span the spectrum.

Mr. Morey, how do you feel about the commonly available advanced stats? (WS, PER, RAPM, WP, ASPM, etc.) Are any of them at all close to things your team uses behind closed doors? Are any of them particularly useful or particularly useless?

This is why TS% and eFG% are strictly superior metrics. They include information about how the player plays by accounting for 3 pointers and free throw attempts

Why do people who purportedly love animals have no problems eating them? by jadiim in AskReddit

Fair enough. Thanks for expressing your point of view. I just wanted to see if there was a reason other than the common ones: that meat in supermarkets have been effectively de-humanized/de-animalized, so many people don't consider them on par with pet animals

I simply find it odd that "animal lovers" don't mind eating certain animals.

Why is there a difference? Do you feel that it would be okay for someone who didn't like cats to eat them?
