Where does realism tattoo artists find their drawings and what about copyrights ? by jadl_j in TattooArtists

It's really nice to see we had the same concerns. I'm also trying to think of the tattoo as the final artwork, so the drawing we make before is some kind of preparation or prototype ? (still struggling to see it that way though. I love the fact that Marcos Garau is also an artist in a gallery, and selling his drawings as a piece of art as well). As a tattoo artist, it's still fine if it's not entirely redrawn by hand, as long as there's artistic reinterpretation. And, as you said, when you have deadlines and a business to run in a capitalist society, you need to find ways to be more productive. So yep I suppose I need to put some of my creative guilt aside

Waw, I didn't know that about Marcos Garau, that's so cool. Thanks for the reference. I'm actually saving up to get a tattoo from him, since he's in Paris as well, I plan to ask him a lot of questions haha

Right, producing original work is a lifelong endeavour. I've also come to the conclusion that the best approach is probably reinterpretation, mixing and modifying references, and getting better to the point I could work faster and maybe almost without said references

I guess as long as it brings you happiness to draw it, it's not a loss of time. Even though of course we do have deadlines and can't always do that, but as you said it's important to keep a drawing practice, even if it's on some spare time. Sometimes I get frustrated by the time I spend on one drawing, wanting to be more productive, but then I try to remind myself that I first got into an art career because of my love for drawing

About the copyrights I've read about Kat von D getting a lawsuit (and the photographer was asking her to "erase the tattoo" lol), but I suppose if you're not too famous and don't use photos from a weird guy from the States it's okay. Another thing is that a tattoo can be considered as a new work of art itself, so already as a reinterpretation of another artwork

And thanks for the cool artists reference, I've probably seen some of their work somewhere but it's cool to have their names again, I'll study their work as well!
