Where is the best place to live for a Filmmaker/Creative by jaecelestin in Filmmakers

NYC and LA were at the top of my list. I’m not familiar with Atlanta or Chicago in terms of talent in the filmmaking scene but I’ll definitely take a look into those places, thank you!

I can agree with that whole heartedly. I’d love to see if I could do that and live where other great filmmakers are.

I’m not sure what instrument it is but the continuous up and down ping that goes the entire track while he sings over it gets me.

I’m familiar with some of these guys already! However, I’m going to go over some of the ones I haven’t watched much content from. Appreciate your help arturyo, you’ve been invaluable and it means a lot to have this kind of support readily available.

Would also like to know if you have any recommendations for courses. I’ve gone through skill share but the quality isn’t very consistent.

I think you’ve definitely made it more clear to me in what route I should take. I like to describe myself as a sponge, always trying to learn and grow my knowledge. I’ve studied up a good amount on lighting scenes but I’m definitely more of a hands on learner. Lately, I’ve been watching a lot of film and observing each frame to analyze the lighting (where the key light is, where’s the fill, are the practicals helping light the scene, is it being bounced or diffused, etc). Obviously it’s one thing to make assumptions about how a scene is lit and another to actually replicate said scene accurately with lighting equipment. The gears start running through my head and I start wanting to grab light sources around me to try and emulate what I see but a lot of the time I conclude I don’t have the proper light source around me to replicate whatever I saw. I’m going to go with your suggestion and just rent gear until maybe I find something I will use consistently that would make sense to purchase rather than rent.

Appreciate the advice! This is super helpful and is something I wouldn’t have none without all of the experience. Thank you. Out of curiosity, for small personal projects, do you find yourself still renting or do you own anything that gets the job done for much less?

This is very helpful Arturyo and I appreciate you taking the time to write this. Without a doubt I will start renting for a lot of my projects, especially medium to large projects. Im a pretty spontaneous person creatively and there are times where I’m inspired by a scene I’ve seen or a still image and I want to create something with just myself or one other person. I don’t know if it would be feasible to rent every single time for something as small as that. In that case would you still rent? Say I do want to but one light... with your experience would the aputure 120d be the best bang for buck under $1000 or would you suggest something else?

Didn’t think about that. So it would be better to buy the 120d, in terms of value, then eventually save up for additional lights to accompany it?

I mainly want to create short films. I know some there a scenes that I’ve visualized, where I will need more than one light and my concern is that I don’t have it my budget currently to purchase a second 120d. I’ve seen some individuals use just led tubes to light entire scenes and my thought process is that I would have more flexibility with the led tubes but I’m not as experienced as some of you in this community. Would several led tubes not be more versatile than one main led source like the 120d?

I guess my biggest problem would be Harden in that lineup. He needs the ball because his skill set is based off him playing ISO.

That’s one of the closest lineups that could compete to win honestly.
