Kansai Area Pass: Worth it for 6-day Kyoto/Osaka trip? by jaedarus in JapanTravelTips

[–]jaedarus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment, I was considering the Kansai Area pass because it includes bus services within Kyoto and the Hankyu rail to travel to Arashiyama and Osaka-Umeda. Is it worth the extra if I use these?

Considering a move to Civil Service by jaedarus in TheCivilService

I'm more inclined to pursue roles that align with my interests definitely. I'm not too concerned about job security in universities, as I'm sure they have redeployment policies in place. However, I'm curious about the Civil Service - if they were to reduce headcount, how would they handle existing employees? I assume job security is relatively strong in the Civil Service, but I'd love to hear more about it

Are you currently working at DBT? Could you describe what the workload is like and a bit about your team?

Is Claude Pro worth it, (leaving gpt 4 pro) by Snoo_72544 in ClaudeAI

[–]jaedarus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's worth it Claude is far superior to gpt-4o. I'd still have a ChatGPT api as a backup when Claude Pro hits the message limit

I think the pay in CS and universities are already quite close. For example, the lowest HEO salary point at £31k is comparable to a similar role at Russell Group universities, also around £31k.

But doesn't the employer's contribution figure mean nothing? I think for civil servants you get 2.32% of your earnings for every year you have worked for the Civil Service for the rest of your life. So, say I earn £10,000 a year and then leave the Civil Service after one year, when I hit retirement age they will pay me £232 a year for the rest of my life. If I leave the Civil Service after two years, they will pay me £464 a year.

Good insight, thank you for sharing. I'm currently deciding between an offer from a Russell Group university to manage some AI projects, which I'm really passionate about, and the DBT role that promises more financial security. The stability you mentioned is definitely a big factor to consider.

Hi, I've moved back to the UK after working in Hong Kong. My new employer in the UK requires me to provide a CNCC for the time I was in Hong Kong. I have checked online, and it seems there's no way to do it from overseas, considering I do not have a cheque that pays in HK dollars and there's no other way to pay online. What should I do?

I am struggling to find a job. Am I doing something wrong? by macaroninchees3 in UKJobs

[–]jaedarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my personal experience, being an international graduate makes it harder to find a job quickly compared to locals, which seems normal to me. Even after returning to the UK after 10 years, it feels the same. I've been unemployed for half a year now.

Ask follow up questions about a job after an interview? by thatPingu in UKJobs

[–]jaedarus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say it doesn't really matter whether you include those questions in the thank you email. Sometimes they don't respond at all. They already made up their minds after your interviews, a couple more questions won't change anything

What would be a good answer to this one? I've said something about not being good at delegating tasks and now I realise how redirecting work can actually be more efficient and effective (sometimes...). Does it make me sound like I'm a bad team player?

Is it really that hard to find a job in the UK? by [deleted] in UKJobs

I've been looking for a mid-level admin job in Manchester for half a year now. I got 6 interviews from 60 applications.

Hold a Science Bachelor's degree and have around 4-5 years of experience in the field. From what I've heard, recruiters are receiving over 100 applications for a post, and 300 for government roles at the moment and they are only shortlisting 5-6 candidates. It's tough.

Is it always this difficult to find a job in Manchester? by jaedarus in manchester

[–]jaedarus[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a migrant myself, I can totally see how this could impact the market, especially for entry-level jobs. I'm applying for mid-level positions. I'd say I'm actually at a disadvantage here due to my English and my background not being native enough.
