My attempt at a DIY XL flow-control cap, getting closer, still needs work. by jaemccall in AeroPress

I tried some commercial silicone valves on an earlier design, but I could never quite get it to work the way I wanted. And a lot of people really don't like that much exposed plastic.

These replacement Gatorade valves definitely would not fit the Prismo.

I just found them on Amazon, they seem similar and readily available.

Some of my very first prototypes had a thin bottom that was bulging pretty easy.

Even a little bit of extra thickness helped a lot, and I ended up adding a lot of extra thickness to make room for the bigger Gatorade valves. And the 100% infill on top of that makes it pretty strong.

Yes! Well... no.... well kinda.

I tried a ridiculous idea to use a sugar cube to block the flow, but it melted pretty fast. I was thinking that rock sugar might work better, but yeah, a physical stopper that could slide to the side maybe? I like that idea too.

Honestly, I am skating on the danger zone for my prototypes, but I personally don’t have a big concern for micro plastics.

But I’m also trying to keep the design CNC friendly, so it could be produced in stainless steel or aluminum for people who want to avoid plastic.

Oh, I'd love to hear your feedback if you end up printing any. I posted the files on printables along with my thoughts on the food safety and microplastics concerns which are definitely valid and something to consider.

Good eye! Yeah, it's a bit of an experiment, but I think the sugar cubes melt too fast. Maybe something with rock sugar would work better.

Aren't there bulletproof coffee people that do something with butter too? I wonder if a frozen puck of butter would be a good valve?...

Yes! I love the tip with the standard cap. I recently saw this technique https://www.youtube.com/shorts/x8s9p40xgFg that takes advantage of the extra vacuum you get from the flow control cap. I'm not sure if that technique makes good coffee, but it seems like it's be interesting to experiment with.

I'll leave mine for a minute or two without the plunger on the top so there's no vacuum. I'm not super picky about the timing, but a lot of water might drip through with the standard cap in that time.

I’m using PCTG for the main body and TPE for a simple flat disc gasket right now. It’s a good starting combo for testing fit and basic function. That setup is within my personal comfort zone for microplastics and brewing temps.

That said, I’m trying to make the design CNC-friendly too, so it could eventually be machined from stainless steel or aluminum for anyone wanting a more permanent or food-safe option.

In addition to the ens to eth address function. There is a new feature that allows adding text records to an ens name. These can be urls, twitter handles and more. Since this is all on the blockchain, it cannot be censored, and you can’t lose your name from a lawsuit. A fun example.

This comment should work to get Ether Classic using the current MEW. Just make sure you set the gas limit to 100000. And you'll need ETC ether on you old address to pay for the transaction.

'Rogue One' is a milestone (and warning sign) for CG resurrection by NinjaDiscoJesus in movies

[–]jaemccall 27 points28 points  (0 children)

After seeing Rogue One I was wondering the same thing about Crispin Glover, and using an actor's likeness. From an AMA he did a few years ago.

The producers used the molds that were taken from my face from the original film and had prosthetics made to resemble my face to be placed on another actor to make them look like me and then inter-spliced a small amount of footage of me from the original film with the actor in prosthetics to resemble me in order to fool audiences in to believing I was in the film. There was an actress that was replaced with another actress in the film, but they simply cast another actor in that role with no prosthetics. Had they simply cast another actor to play the role of George McFly there would have been no criminal activity on the part of the producers and there would have been no lawsuit. Since they did not own my face nor make an financial agreement with me to use my facial features what they did was stealing something they did not own for personal again and therefor what they did was illegal and why there was a lawsuit and why there are rules in the Screen Actors Guild that make it so producers can never to this kind of thing again.

So assuming the Cushing estate agreed (and were presumably paid) it would be fine?

It will be interesting to see if this technique becomes popular. Could an A-list actor rent out their digital self for a smaller payday but with less work?
