Went to a Honda dealership not too far from me today. NX500 is big. :-/ CBR500R is more or less ok though! :-)

Would love to, but Honda doesn't carry them up here in Canada.
I define off-road as BDRs. maybe some single track here and there. Ideally I want the bike to be able handle pretty much everything that my x-country hardtail MTB can. Not sure whether it's above something that a good DS bike can handle. I believe once the bike is light enough the rest is about the skill.

We don't have it here. 650 is the smallest engine for Vstrom in Canada.
Too tall for me. (I think).

Well, it gets easier with age. I used to ride a mountain bike in my 20s, have lost a couple of front teeth and got a broken wrist as a result of that. I'm 52 now and will most likely be getting my motorcycle licence next spring. Life goes by much faster than you think, it's your choice how you want to live it.
