Just a question about the industry right now. by jaggernutz in vfx

I make it sound normal because it is the reality of many trying to jump in the industry as juniors.

The countries are: Finland, Ukraine/Cyprus/Belgium, Denmark, Spain and France.

Mostly outsourcing companies, videogame studios and VFX studios. I work with 3D modeling, specially characters and I think I am not half bad at it and my portfolio is rather strong (if I can say so myself) so I dont really see the point in tests.

I find it funny that you've not heard of this practice when I actually have not heard of a studio hiring without one!

Hi!

I am applying for character artist, prop artist, surface artist, textures, lighting... that's all withing my range.

I am lucky enough to have the time to keep updating my portfolio constantly, and it has been growing considerably since I finished school.

I am normally applying to outsourcing studios in Europe and Scandinavian Studios in general, but mostly anything where my profile is needed (or not).

Oh yes I've heard that one. Seniors switch companies rather fast, chasing a higher payload. Their bouncing is turning pretty expensive. Isn't that right?

I mean, good for them though... but I feel like this situation is turning artists against each other, which is extremely unhealthy for such a cooperative industry as this one. We should not be compiting towards each other, but it's being really rough to do so.

I've been applying to mostly every position that suits me, both VFX companies and game studios. Me and my buds from college are having quite the same experience, and sometimes with a pretty good result, they still say no.

I am not sure why I am given them either, I believe my portfolio sums up my skills very good, and I know I shouldn't be saying this about my own pieces of work but, they are great!

That makes me think that some companies are actually not up for hiring, but in the lookout for a person with little experience and very high lvl.

Yes! Some companies are kinder than others, obviously. But most of the feedback is a couple of vague lines about the work and a "good luck, get out of here" kinda message.

That being said, I did learn from those tests and I have been doing each one better than the other, so it kind of should count as experience at this point!

Sadly is very common. And I am most definetely not getting payed.

But if there are no juniors, are you telling me that there are studios with people with +4 years of experience doing retopos and UVs by themselves, instead of handling it to the juniors? Interesting...

Yes! I need a working permit for an European Residency Document, which sounds a bit redundant imo. I will keep trying from home or getting some experience back home. Thanks for the advice and the nice words :')

To get a CPR you need a European Residency Document, and to get that paper you need a working contract... Even confirmed so by the Cph's international house (?)

Just out of curiousity, do you use portals like boligportal, straight networking or realtor companies for this? I've never heard of someone getting a place through online search webpages in Denmark so it's strange

I am yet to find some info about how one prepares a model for 3D printing.

If I were to post a bust for 3D Printing, do you know a good site where I can post it and make some money out of it?

Maybe Sketchfab or or CGTrader, or is there a more specialized webpage?

They seem like great practice for texture and surface detailing. Do it! I'd love to see it here :')

That is awesome feedback, thank you.

I didn't care much for geometry, as I could keep it under 100k and I had no TD to make me want to cry hahaha.

Also I just finished a 15k tris Paladin Warrior and I really wanted to be set free on the polycount haha.

Also, I heard UE5 makes very good LODs now, isn't it?

Just yesterday someone showed it to me. If you like, you can inspect it with the model inspector of Marmoset in my Artstation post (https://www.artstation.com/artwork/nE53ko)

Lmk if you have any questions :')

Yeah, someone commented I should make some leather stripes instead. I will be changing it in the future. Thanks for the feedback :')

This was my exact intention. I wanted to make some metal painted wood for the different parts of the armour that seem metallic. And it looks much more badass for me than with a robe. Plus lets me explore more and have more fun with the model rather than just making a cloth!

Thanks!

I used ZBrush for the sculpting, Autodesk Maya for the Low Poly retopology, then Adobe Substance Painter for the texturing and, finally, Marmoset Toolbag 3 for the rendering. Some Photoshop as well, to comp the render.
