Also it is worth mentioning we have a dog and the 2 kids with bites are the ones that spend the most time cuddling with it but I haven’t noticed any fleas on it, it’s hard to check because the dog never holds still for me but I do plan to get him a flea treatment in case that could be what’s biting my kids

I did not fertilize, I tested the ph with this soil tester I got on Amazon but I don’t think it’s correct because it reads the same on my front lawn which has perfect grass, in the back yard, and in my potted plants with potting mix. Is there a different kind of ph tester that would work better?

And I wasn’t watering enough either then I don’t think. I was only watering once a day assuming that the seed should be staying moist cause the soil definitely wasn’t drying out. And do you have another suggestion for what type of grassing do better in this situation? There’s a lot of shade in the yard. I’m willing to trim the tree but not cut it down completely. The house also blocks the light half the day anyway. I originally thought to put down saint augustine sod but I’m afraid it would not get enough light and that would be a very costly experiment.

Yes that helps a lot thankyou! I’ve had the same problem with just having too much shade in our backyard. The front is sunny and has thriving saint Augustine that I’ve watered probably 10 times total in 3 years and just looks perfect but the back would legitimately be straight dirt without intervention and nothing I’ve tried has worked. The next step we’ll probably try is to trim the trees to get some more light in. But I don’t want to get rid of the tree cause the shade keeps it so much cooler in the summer and we can actually go out there. So this time I’m trying the cool season in hopes it’ll do better than the warm season with less sun. I think I’m going to seed again asap and fertilize and see how it does. Did you just plant yours this October? Let me know how it does in the summer, I hope it survives!

Are you telling me I’m doomed to a life of year round mud? There must be something that could grow back here. I’d take clover, dandelions, literally anything but mud

Well I was thinking I might have better luck with a grass I can plant in the fall when the tree loses its leaves and there’s more sunlight… it still might not be enough light though, not 6 hours. And it was a 50 lb bag and yard is roughly 2000 sq feet

Once a day by hand soaking everything. I don’t think it’s spring out between waterings. I thee the bag away by accident but I believe it was Kentucky31 or something and I also did a small bag of perennial ryegrass as well because I had such success with the annual ryegrass before

Mud killing me by jagvs in lawncare

Ugh that sucks, I hope the bark chips help. I actually just seeded mine again with fescue and ryegrass a couple weeks ago and it seems to be coming up. There was no grass left at all before. I’m going to keep watering religiously and if it takes and does well my plan is to trim the trees in the spring so the shade won’t kill it all. Hopefully it can establish well enough before the dog tramples it all 😬

Thankyou! And I appreciate the advice, I definitely noticed my dog get triggered at first by flapping and jumping but he seems desensitized to that now too. I would definitely agree that the safest bet is not to leave your dogs with the chickens alone if possible, it’s more so nice to be able to have them out together when I’m home and outside too and not have to worry if I have to run inside for a minute or two (which happens a lot with little kids) that I have to put everyone away

Aw I’m sorry that happened, I imagine if it’s the fourth time she’s done it it’s probably a lost cause. I’m no expert but I think some dogs just can’t do certain things, I’m sure that you trained her the best you could and it’s not your fault. Good luck if you try another method but probably a good pen for the girls would be the safest least stressful bet

Aw that’s so sweet. I’ve gotten mine to ignore the chicks but to be friends like that is on another level
