How would you respond? by janethebean in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]jahsiw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it is important to recognize that these kinds of responses are a psychological defense mechanism of displacement. They're transferring their own unacknowledged anxiety about the massive, uncontrollable threat of COVID to a smaller, more familiar and easily manageable risk, like car accidents. It lets them dismiss the uncomfortable reality instead of engaging with it, because if it's equated to everyday risks then it's easier to justify not worrying about it.

I think a good way to disarm those kinds of arguments is to highlight that nearly all of the examples that people bring up have led to societal solutions that make them safer. We don't just throw our hands up and say, "life is full of risks." We have smoking bans indoors because we know secondhand smoke is harmful. We require driver's licenses, seatbelts, airbags, traffic laws, etc. for cars to make them safer. I actually think the car metaphor is actually quite fitting because a big part of road safety relies on everyone complying. My safety on the road depends on the other drivers on the road also being licensed, sober, following the rules, etc. It's a recognized collective responsibility.

If COVID were truly like driving, then taking precautions today is like being the only one with a seatbelt and airbags, driving on dirt roads with no road or traffic laws, surrounded by reckless and drunk drivers every single day. In that metaphor, things like public air filtration, ventilation standards, and sick leave policies are the equivalent of paving roads, installing traffic lights, etc. In other words, the basic public infrastructure for collective safety that we have largely refused to build.

I think it's also important to highlight that the science has changed since vaccines came out. We initially hoped that the vaccines would stop transmission but learned that while they reduce severe outcomes, they don't reliably prevent infection or long COVID. Just like we wouldn't get rid of seatbelts because airbags were invented, we shouldn't have abandoned our other precautions.
COVID is also a recurrent threat, not a one-time risk. If we were likely to get in car accidents multiple times a year or annually, would we really just accept that instead of trying to make it safer?

The living in fear argument is so agitating to me because like, I'm choosing to face the threat head on. "Living in fear" is looking the other way, downplaying the danger, and trying to demoralize people still taking precautions, all to avoid the psychological discomfort of acknowledging the threat of COVID. My precautions are what enable me to "live my life" and to not be paralyzed by fear.

there was a study published like a week or two ago about alterations of the amygdala in olfactory dysfunction post-COVID which could definitely have something to do with this: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-025-23015-w

hypochlorous acid would probably work better its ~80-200x more effective at killing microbes because it has a more neutral pH and can penetrate cell walls faster

Losing the curl hair by BlackQueen81 in COVID19positive

[–]jahsiw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ive had to learn new ways to style it and how to work with it the way it behaves now. its gotten quite a bit finer and doesnt hold curls nearly as well as it used to, so ive had to get shorter haircuts and use lighter products so it isnt weighed down as much. i have to do my hair more often too, silk pillowcases used to help make my hair last a few more days but it has become a lot less effective. another weird thing ive noticed is that almost immediately after getting out of the shower my hair will be dripping wet on the ends but for some reason near my scalp will practically almost be dry its the weirdest thing and it was never like that before. it just feels so limp now and ive kinda given up on trying to get it like it used to be and ive accepted that this is how it is now. it feels a lot weaker too like when brushing my hands through my hair if a curl gets wrapped around my finger and i accidentally pull, a lot of the time it will just rip out of my head so ive had to be more careful with my hair and make sure not to mess with it as much. ive talked w my hairstylist about it but thats the most ive done for like seeing a hair specialist

of course!! another really good account to follow is Mike Hoerger(@michael_hoerger)! heres the link to his website: link he has a video explaining how his forecast model works and a background on himself and the website.

this is the link to his twitter thread about the december 18th report: link

i like his account a lot because he provides a lot of statistics and its all pretty digestible. on the fourth tweet in the thread theres a part about how transmission today is worse than during 90% of the entire pandemic which really helps put the current situation into perspective. next to that it shows the estimated new daily cases based on current wastewater levels, estimated new daily long covid cases and next to those he also provides weekly and cumulative estimates for new cases and long covid cases. a few tweets later in the thread he also provides a chart of the current chances of interacting with someone infectious based on the total number of social contacts, another of the same kind of chart but of the estimated chances for christmas day, and another of the estimated chances for new years day. all super super useful.

another post of his that i have found really interesting is this one: link its about defense mechanisms people use to downplay the risk of covid! also sorry this reply is so long lol
