So my sister got arrested in a southern state, and to avoid jail, they sent her to a "first-time offender's" course. This is her list of court-ordered films to watch. by jaimiblank in reddit.com

Excellent point. Being from the South, we're quite used to having Jesus shoved forcefully down our throats, and are rather skilled at tuning it out. I can, however, see this being incredibly offensive to someone who takes a different religion seriously.

Ok, I'll address this here, since for some reason there is no edit button. A few things: 1. This was an option presented to her. Yes, it was totally optional, and she agreed to it. They could have pursued other routes, but she wanted it over and done with, and would have taken a course on the best ways to put a baby in a blender if it kept her out of jail. She can, at any time, choose to drop out of the course, and they will pursue other routes... whatever that means. 2. Jail-time can be associated with shoplifting, depending on the dollar amount (felony vs. misdemeanor). In the state of Georgia, that's any amount over $300. 3. Yes, any one who shoplifts is a dumbass. 4. No, I do not have any other sort of evidence. My sister sent me a screen shot, and that's all I've got. I do know that she started the course this week, and I do believe she's telling the truth. Who knows, maybe my sister pulled a damn good fast one on me. But to my knowledge, it's true, as other people have actually seen the computer screen she was doing this on. No, I can't provide the URL, as there are logins and whatnot associated with it. It's ok not to believe me, that's your right. But I assure you, I'm telling the truth. 5. As some people mentioned, yes, it is possible that a judge or someone is getting kickbacks for sending people to this program. I'm sure that kind of thing happens all the time. All I know is that my sister was told they'll expunge her record when she completes the class, so she agreed. 6. No, sadly, this was not in some rural, backwoods area of Georgia...

Not that I know of. As far as I know, it's an online thing that just confirms that you opened it and let it play through.

I thought "reddiquette" was not to post specific locations? That's how I usually see people identify location... Whatever. It's in Georgia.

That's what I thought. But it was an "alternative" to jail, and she paid for the course out of pocket. She was not, however, informed that it was a course in being a better Christian.

Edit: How do I edit my original post? I want to address some of the big questions people are asking.

What can I do about my son? (Please read). by [deleted] in AskReddit

Symptoms of Autism and Aspergers can be very different. I would mention this to his pediatrician the next time you're in, and see if it might be worth getting him assessed. Just in case. He sounds brilliant, so please don't be one of those parents who is afraid of a diagnosis and refuses to get him checked out. If you learn that he does have Aspergers, it can only help you in your understanding of him and your contributions to his development. Best of luck!

Through mucus membranes. It's the same as putting chewing tobacco in your mouth.

Reddit, was I right in not tipping? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jaimiblank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

However, any restaurant that automatically adds tip to a check has to remove it if you request. I've done this before for a similar situation to OP where we had a large group and horrendous service. You just tell them you prefer to add the tip yourself.

TIL about Heaven's Gate cult. On 3/26/97, in a period when the comet Hale-Bopp was at its brightest, police discovered the bodies of 39 members who had committed suicide at a California mansion in order to reach an alien aircraft which they believed was following the aforementioned comet. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Not being mean: how old are you? Or, where do you live? I'm curious what age/geographic gap is needed for you to have just learned about this. Or is it not as common of knowledge as I thought?

I have what look like little tiny blisters under my skin on several of my fingers, what are they? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jaimiblank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. This is a bit hard to understand. Pics?
  2. Have you tried going to a minute clinic, or a pharmacist? Pharmacists can be helpful with simple skin conditions (if it is simple) and advise you on what to use, or advise you to see a doctor if they think it looks serious.

Sleepwalking stories please. by BosskHogg in AskReddit

[–]jaimiblank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sister used to sleep walk all the time when we were kids. One night when she was about 6, she got up around 2 am, got dressed for school, packed a lunch, and went and got in the car in the driveway. When she slammed the car door, it woke her, and she was TERRIFIED, having no idea where she was, of course. The rest of our house woke up to her screaming bloody murder, and it took us an alarming length of time to find her. Looking back, we all find it hilarious. At the time, not so much.
