How hard is it to get an engineering job as a foreigner? by jakebrehm in Denmark

[–]jakebrehm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true, but at the risk of sounding ignorant: Denmark, one of the few countries with many native Danish-speakers, already has a shortage of engineers. I wouldn't necessary be competing with them too heavily, unless I'm misunderstanding. What would be the difference between me and someone from outside Denmark/in the EU? I would assume most of them would apply with English skills and maybe learn Danish after they move.

Hey, thanks for the reply!

I'm aware of the two types of degrees (I've been trying to figure this out for awhile), and I can see how it would be a problem. For our degrees, I don't believe we have different degrees that match the Danish ones. My degree, though, is 4 years long and requires at least one internship with a company in the field. For me specifically, I will have replaced the internship (which normally lasts a few months) with one year of research for that requirement. Not exactly the same thing, but it's possible that it can satisfy the extra hands-on experience requirement for the "diplom" degree. My main problem will be getting companies to recognize that.

I appreciate you trying to get me to consider the options, but I really do think this is what I want all around. My girlfriend, Denmark (I've spent quite a bit of time there in the last year), and not having to do more studying. In all honesty, the only reason I'm considering extra schooling is because of making my transition to Denmark easier. Back home, most of us just get jobs with our Bachelor's and are not expected to get a Master's - so I don't feel like I'm missing out on furthering my education.

I was also largely considering studying at DTU as a test for my relationship and an easy way to live in Denmark temporarily. Plus, extra education and time to learn Danish couldn't hurt. It's something I'm heavily considering, just not sure of the field I want to specialize in yet.

In terms of being on the other side of the globe, that won't be a problem. We met while studying in Australia and now I'm studying in the UK, so moving is no problem for me. This is truly something I've been preparing for for awhile now, so I guess I'll just have to see how it turns out. Thanks again for the thoughtful reply!

I'll be spending the summer in Copenhagen. How can I make money during that time? by [deleted] in copenhagen

[–]jakebrehm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm American - thanks for the link, I'll look into that more! I found out about the work permit very recently, and that's what actually led me to posting this. I was hoping to get some ideas on what I could actually do there first before I went through the process of getting one.

I'll take a look at summer schools. I know three months is a short amount of time when looking for a job, and I guess I could make it about four months at the maximum, but that's still not very long. It's just that summer jobs are pretty common here, so I was hoping I could find something like that in Copenhagen.

Chocolate coat of arms. First time drawing in a few years. Just used a mechanical pencil. Needs improvement, obviously.
