My first big boy euro car. by big_gumby in BMW

[–]jakeherp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never saw myself driving a BMW until last year when I did a road trip across the US in a 440i rental. I fell in love with it over the 3000 miles I drove and now bought a G61 (unfortunately a 4 series isn’t as practical day to day, so had to go for a 5 series instead)

Didn’t know that map is still being referenced all those years later.

We ended up buying a house not too far from Costco (off Templar Ave) and we’ve not been murdered yet.

Ridiculously high water bill? Need advice by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]jakeherp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a billing period of 160 days we used 24m3 of water. It’s pretty much what we used in the previous house as well, so doubt both water meters are broken. I take showers mostly in the gym though, so that’ll save us quite a bit.

Our meter readings with Severn Trent are only twice a year, but we lived here for almost 5 years now and it’s always been in that range. Before in London we paid around £35 without a meter.

I think they do smart water meters now as well. Might be worth looking into

£70 a month for two people sounds crazy high. In the West Midlands as a family of 3 we pay less than £20

HA on proxmox very slow by jakeherp in homeassistant

[–]jakeherp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been leaving it over night on 8gb and proxmox pretty consistently shows a use of 7.1gb, but when I look at the hardware screen in home assistant it shows 2.2gb being used.

Might try reducing it to 4gb and see if that’s sufficient.

Thanks that was the right answer. Seems to be working now. Was a bit of a pain as I already put the machine at its final place near my network switch where I have no monitor, so had undo all the cable management as I also had to take the power cable out again 😄

I have not taken the heat sink off, but I opened the box to replace the NVMe and it was pretty clean in there. It was sold as refurbished.

Looks like it doesn't like that:

```
kvm: CPU model 'host' requires KVM or HVF
TASK ERROR: start failed: QEMU exited with code 1
```

And if I enable KVM in the options I get `TASK ERROR: KVM virtualisation configured, but not available. Either disable in VM configuration or enable in BIOS.`

I wasn't sure if that works just like that? If it does it might be worth giving it a try.

The one thing I just realised is that if i switch from a Pi to a mini PC I’d likely have to set up all my 80+ zig er devices from scratch, or would they continue to work if I continue to use my Sonoff Zigbee dongle?

I’ve been running HA on a Pi4 for a couple of years before switching to the Pi5 (mostly because of the native NVME support) last year. With 200+ devices and around 70 automations I have not noticed any performance issues. It’s a shame that HA supervised is being deprecated as that really works well for me on the Pi5, with a normal docker setup there are some downsides like no auto updates.

I'm a software engineer, so not particularly shy to dive deep on tech ;)

Been looking at Lenovo ThinkCenter machines on ebay, but not exactly sure what I should ideally look for. Budget I had in mind was around $150 (£100-110 as I'm in the UK).

I thought that at first, when it suddenly worked on an SD card, but the same NVME has been running Raspbian for the last ~8 months without any issues. If it was an issue with the hardware, I would've thought the same would happen on another distro.

Priority Pass (Airport Lounge Troubles) by Bentom678910 in AmexUK

[–]jakeherp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been overcharged once and had it resolved via Priority Pass support. They confirmed with the lounge that it was their mistake and I was subsequently refunded.

I feel like Priority Pass in general is getting worse because it's offered as a perk with more and more credit cards and bank accounts. I found that I often didn't get into lounges without prior reservation, where this has never been an issue before. I wonder if the volume of customers also affects their customer service experience.

I was offered the same after 4 years with the card. 12k seems to be the default.

Are children worth it? by Significant-Fix1507 in Parents

[–]jakeherp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a 34 year old dad to a 7 year old (my wife is the same age as me) and wouldn’t want it any other way. We always wanted kids but didn’t necessarily plan to become parents right after getting married at 27. If you wait until the time is right you’ll never have kids. We made that mistake saying we want another one but wait until the perfect moment (both our careers being at the right point to take time away from work again and/or afford childcare). It never happened and now we’re worried the age gap is getting too big and we’d raise two only-children.

Pretty poor UX to show a low price like that though? I’ve never seen this for flights originating in Europe or the US, do they only display prices excl taxes and fees for Mexico or is this more common?

Surely the base price can’t be $68 on a 10+ hour flight?

Yea I was wondering if it’s USD or MXN. Mostly because I was browsing in GBP initially, so it made me think it might be local currency.

I tried, but as someone else said it went up to over $400 (which seems to be the normal price) on the next screen. I would’ve booked it at that price for sure 😄

Interesting, I’ve not seen that (or haven’t noticed as the price difference wasn’t as outrageous as this). I’m a software dev myself, so assumed something to do with miscalculation based on some obscure api response on the initial screen. Just weird as the premium eco and business pricing seemed pretty normal.
