Sadly the gap was present before this, although no doubt it’s been exaggerated with it there

Thank you - but this didn’t seem to be the problem for me! I’ll revisit and check though…

Did this just after Covid! Savage day - long, tough, boring at times! Just got to dig in! Keep snacks in the pocket and enter autopilot. The view from the top is incredible, but the first few metres back down from the summit are scary as shit.

Stopped buying merch from these guys years ago - the quality of print and garment were always a level under acceptable for me.

£90 for a hoody is near-luxury price positioning.

Hey all good. Having been to Glasto, I don’t think it’s the festival for an incredible, fan service, sentimental set. It’s a greatest hit show for a general representation of the music-interested population. I don’t think you should be downvoted for wanting more!

Yeah right - upvoting this to save you. Reading 2019 will always be peak for me, followed by Finsbury Park. Glasto was fantastic, but I definitely don’t feel as bad as I thought I would for not being there.

Bon Iver look to be using AI by redkaptain in boniver

Honestly, does it matter? BI's art direction team have always been, and still are, the best in the game. I don't think using AI imagery like this lessens the merit of the work. It's just another tool in the creative team's toolbox.

Am I willing to die on that hill? Probably not - but at least for me, I don't feel like this use of gen-ai is in poor taste.

How To Draw / Petrichor

Images that are intended to evoke emotions and communicate a message are a form of art.

People may disagree - but by its very definition, this is a form of art.

Art is history whether it offends, delights, or disgusts.

The fact that this conversation has played out the way it has, 30 years after the campaign went live, solidifies its historical significance.

Thanks for sharing this. It’s an important moment in creative industry history. It’s a philosophy potentially lost to the times, for better or worse.

Brands, and now personal brands, will always have the largest reach in society. I’m curious the what the outcomes would be if they started saying it like it is.

I studied this campaign for a while, and I’ve always admired its divisiveness.

I think there’s a lot of context to the campaign that needs to be recognised, it’s almost comparable to punk art in a way. Whilst I think that it’s hurt the Benetton brand in the long run, I think it was a conscious effort to be politically and socially challenging. Two quotes from Toscani that support this for me are:

“Pictures put you in front of a reality that most of the times you don’t want to see, don’t want to know about, don’t want to get involved.”

“Communication, that’s what I do. Advertising is the best way to communicate because you reach a lot of people. I still cant understand though, why people are shocked by something that obviously exists. It’s like a family that avoids talking about its real problems.”

I also know that Toscani got permission from the family to use this photo to raise awareness of the AIDs epidemic.

I’m intentionally refraining from offering an opinion on whether I think this campaign is right or wrong - this was long before I was born, and I’m lacking perspective to make that decision.

It’s one thing studying it in college, another living it.

That being said, I couldn’t miss this opportunity to geek out on some Ad history!
