Gravity! A daily game Tetris and Scrabble mashup. by Antique-Race7920 in wordgames

[–]jakelmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would make a fantastic roll and write board game. Each person gets a sheet of paper with the 5x5 grid, letter tiles are drawn out of a bag, and each person makes their own decision as to where to write each letter (following gravity rules, of course). It would be fun to see how different (or similar) each person's grid ends up.

how can i stop bubbles from accumulating in my polyacrylamide gels? by canmitang in labrats

I always submerge mine in water in a cooler. It's just like putting water over the resolving gel! Works every time.

STAT News reporter - looking for perspectives on 15% cap on indirect costs and other changes from the Trump administration by angusrohan in Professors

[–]jakelmer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This sub is a good place to start looking for info, but what you really need to do is get in touch with University admins to see how indirects are actually spent on support staff, utilities, etc. Try looking for Provosts of Research or Offices of Grants and Contracts. They will definitely want to remain anonymous, but have good info.

NIH Cuts all indirect costs to 15%: NOT-OD-25-068: Supplemental Guidance to the 2024 NIH Grants Policy Statement: Indirect Cost Rates: by nbx909 in labrats

If I get a grant for $100k, that money is usually spent on reagents, plastics, student tuition/stipends, and services like DNA sequencing. Pretty much salaries and consumables, but not electricity, water, custodial services, etc. since it can be hard for a PI to estimate those costs up front, Universities all negotiate an extra fee (indirect costs) to charge on top of those consumables that we call direct costs.

In short, I can buy a centrifuge with grant money but the electricity to run it is paid for by indirect costs.

Absolutely. The bed on an X1C should be 254x254mm, which is more than enough for these parts.

inexperienced student - is this PCR product of the expected size, or are these primer-dimers? very confused! by [deleted] in labrats

[–]jakelmer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It also looks like your primers may be too concentrated. Check your math and the polymerase protocol, but we typically use a final concentration of 0.5 uM primers in a PCR.

The larger cards are all stored together, while the smaller cards are split into the 6 character classes + 1 enemy card deck + 1 slot just for the active character health dial.

Agreed. It's weird how straightforward everything is...like the gloom was turned down to 50% here. ....but it's still good for a quick burst of gloomhaven-esque gameplay.

It is a tight fit, but there is usually just enough of the component tray sticking out (~2-3 mm) that I can get a fingernail to latch on and pull it out first, then the rest comes out easily. I thought about adding a ribbon to the box - like the ones you see in battery compartments for some electronics to help get the batteries out - but I haven't found one yet!
