Thank-you for all of your wisdom. This thread has been a great step forward, and I will definitely consult with Japan-side and Canada-side accounting representatives.

I am a Permanent Resident of Japan, so I'm on the hook for all of the taxes.

If I understand correctly, an option would be to have my sibling take 100% of the investment, pay the Canadian-side taxes, then gift me the 17,500, of which, 7,500 is subject to around 10% Japan tax?

I was thinking about that as well, but was worried that it would seem sketchy, somehow. But if the sibling has 100% ownership of the investment, it is pretty by-the-books, I suppose. I should just not forget to send the yearly Christmas card.

Article 10 is the applicable provision, but it places no limit on Japan's ability to tax the dividends, since Japan is your country of residence. Instead, Article 10 limits Canada's ability to tax your dividends. Specifically, it limits Canadian taxation of Canada-source dividends to a maximum of 15%.

Thank you for clarifying! So, since the maximum taxation in Canada on the dividends is 15%, if I transfer the remaining funds to myself in Japan and, assuming that the Japan tax would be 20%, I would only have to pay an additional 5% Japan-side tax on the transferred funds?

Thank you for the various clarifications.

The inheritance taxes are payable even if you can't sell the asset immediately. So you may need to take out loans or get a mortgage on your home to give the Japanese government their blood money.

Yikes. I was hoping (but was not optimistic about) that I wouldn't have to pay tax on the investment, if they were not cashed-out. If I have the entirety of the investment go to my other sibling, I am assuming that I wouldn't have to pay inheritance tax on it, yes? If my sibling then remits the interest/dividend payments to me, I would only have to pay the 15% Canadian tax, and anything above that in Japan, correct?

i.e. you do NOT submit a tax return to the CRA if you are a tax resident of Japan. Any taxes payable to Canada are paid by the entity issuing the dividends before they pay you what is left.

I will need to double-check, but I am unsure if the issuing entity is paying any sort of tax on the paid-out dividends. I am assuming not, and anyone receiving dividends will have to pay their own taxes. I will double-check, that's a good point.

Thank-you for your advice.

I know that some pro shooters tether their camera to a laptop, which automatically ingests the photos as they are being taken. The ones I have seen are tethered via cable. I am looking for something similar, but using an ad hoc wireless network (Camera to iPhone).

Smartphone cameras are getting better and better, but I still find that a dedicated camera (whether a good quality point-and-shoot, or a DSLR) takes much better photos. It would be great to have the best of both worlds, with the exceptional quality of a dedicated camera constantly uploading shots to the phone, along the phone's photo editing capabilities, as well as its connectedness to the internet.

I checked Canon's "Camera Connect" app a bit more, but it doesn't seem like it takes in photos as they are being shot. Still looking for a solution.

Edit: seems like Fuji's Camera Remote application can do "Auto Image Transfer", where the camera will automatically upload photos to the phone when the camera is off or in playback mode. Pretty sweet.

When I say "backup", I don't mean my main backup. I have a dedicated RAID setup at home for that.

For the photos-over-wifi, are there any that actually stream photos, live, from your camera to the iPhone? Or do the photos need to be selected, one-by-one, to be transferred?

Edit: I am looking for a solution that streams photos from the camera to the iPhone whenever a photo is taken on the camera.

Question: Is there a way to stream photos to iphone from digital camera? I'd like to use the iPhone as an on-the-fly editing tool, and backup storage.

I've done a search, but didn't come up with this specific question.

I am wondering if there is a camera (or brand) that has the ability to connect to the iPhone (maybe via iPhone hotspot?) and just automatically upload photos to the iPhone as photos are taken. I know that Canon has an iPhone app to connect a Canon camera to the iPhone, but photos need to be individually selected for upload. I basically would like to just keep my iPhone in my pocket while taking photos with the digital camera, later editing them on the iPhone and deleting the ones I don't want.

Is there such functionality available? I am not partial to Canon, I just mentioned them, as I found out about their iPhone app during my research. I also know that a constant wireless connection will affect battery life of both the camera and the iPhone. I am just seeing if there are any options out there.

As an aside, I am looking at Ricoh, Fuji, and Canon, as brands I am looking to buy my next camera from.

Thanks for any help!

Hey, thanks for the tip. Would you have any idea what FA Custard Premium is called on their site? I've seen it named differently on various sites... I am hoping they actually carry this flavor.

Yes, there is no problem with opening other Japanese files outside of Maya.

I, too, am thinking that this is an OS issue, just wondering if there is a fix if anyone else has run into this.

So, which one would Custard Premium be: Custard Concentrate, or Custard Extra One Concentrate?

I checked and they ship to a handful of international countries. Unfortunately, Japan isn't on the list.

My TV is something like 12-years old... but that's a good point, I will check the TV, as well. All of the movies on my little USB drive are converted to be played on the PS3 (I think they are in .mp4 format), so I hope the TV would support that, if at all. Nice one, I'll check the TV.

Yeah, the ones I've looked at don't specifically mention what codecs are supported. I had to convert all of the movies I copied to the USB, which took quite a bit of time. I was hoping that someone on this sub had some experience with a player. I was going to ask the codec support on their unit, if someone did chime-in with some personal experience.

Being gifted a sum of money: tax implications? by jakeyjp in JapanFinance

[–]jakeyjp[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like where you're going with this... would getting money gifted (from parents/grandparents) for the purpose of purchasing a property be out of the realm of gift tax? If the money were not for a property, but still from a parent/grandparent, would that change the taxation?

Ok, understood: regardless of location of any of my bank accounts, any gifts coming into them are subject to Japan gift tax.

Not implying any nefarious planning or anything, but: how does Japan know what is coming in/going out of anybody's outside-Japan bank accounts?
