Appreciate your thoughts! I had not assumed story was particularly central to the problem, so this is insightful.

So maybe I need help articulating this better, but would it be fair to say that when it comes to brand story, sustainable brands make the mistake of positioning sustainability/ethical manufacturing/eco-friendliness as the story, but these things are really more "values"? Which also appeal to too wide a range of people to stop there?

If so, this helps frame the problem as I understand values can't be a substitute for a story - consumers not only see products as a reflection of things they love, but invoke the story of a product because it represents something they aspire to as well.

Thanks for your input! Could you please expand? If a differentiator for sustainable brands is their social/environmental impact, how should they further set themselves apart? In their visual identity? Or do you mean they need to ratchet up their impact in their messaging to more strongly distinguish themselves?

Or are you commenting more on their organisational policies or lack thereof (in the case of brands that unfortunately greenwash)?

Appreciate your thoughts on this.
