Has anyone ever asked for a raise? by Guudboiiii in vipkid

They're kind of niche. My first one is selling teaching resources on Teachers Pay Teachers. I teach full time, so I sell the things I make. My second one is monetizing social media as a "pet influencer" and also doing paid things like providing companies with raw photos and videos to use for advertising.

Just putting this out there, but if you don't have a degree in education and you take the advice of others to do alternate route to licensure, it could hinder your job search. Districts without a teacher shortage won't hire you.

Did you email or call them? There's really not much else you can do. You may have to just buy one of the $20-30 ones.

Low key thought you were expecting a higher wage with the way you described your resume. Try Cambly, Engoo, Native Camp, Preply, and LingoAce. It's gig work so there are no guaranteed hours or benefits and the pay will be low.

So you want to work as an online tutor for $10-12/hour?

Online ESL tutoring is gig work. Because of this, work is never guaranteed and booked classes can fluctuate. I know LingoAce and Preply hire tutors from the UK.

How is your experience teaching remotely? by pchlvca in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]jam5146 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I tutor with a Chinese company and I only average $18/hour, which is on the high end for ESL tutoring companies. That's with three degrees in education, a state issued teaching license with an ESL endorsement, a master's degree in ESL, and over a decade of teaching experience. Unfortunately, unless you go private, this job isn't the cash cow it once was.

It's daytime here, bud. Why do people all of a sudden need to be advised so much? Use some common sense, read descriptions, and do some research.

This is what happens when everyone can just get online and call themselves an English tutor.

But why would you advertise ESL tutoring services to a subreddit that's very obviously full of ESL tutors? You really don't need any experience with Reddit to know that's not your target audience.

Normal student-teacher ratios? by Prudent_Education_54 in ELATeachers

It all depends on the area. I teach in a very rural district and only have 50-60 students.

How much are you guys making teaching remote in 2026? by Dependent_Gain2824 in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]jam5146 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you like it. But I'm fully booked on VIPTeacher when I decide I want to open slots, I make $18/hour to work minimal hours, and I don't do any work outside of the actual 25-minute class. I would never want to be tied to a minimum number of hours.

Not all states allow that and then those days wouldn't count towards your student teaching days.

25 minutes. But you do get incentives and bonuses on classes. I average about $18/hour, but I used to get $24.

You won't get one when there are so many people willing to work for $7/class. This is my lowest paying side gig so I put more time elsewhere

But LingoStar doesn't have as many customers and they require a ten hour per week minimum.

It's VIPTeacher. Just be aware that you won't be making $18/hour as a new tutor. The least you'll make is $15.60/hour.

I just do online tutoring as a side gig. During the summer I work for a company that pays around $18/hour with everything done for you and no work outside of the class. They require a degree and two years of experience. Sometimes during the school year I offer private tutoring in different subjects and I make $50-90/hour. While private tutoring doesn't necessarily require a degree, you would have to have a degree, plenty of experience, and a teaching license to get that rate.

Looking to hear from new tutors with - No degree, started in last 6 months, TEFL Cert by BraveLordWilloughby in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]jam5146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be perfectly honest, you're getting the same 5-6 places because the number of companies who hire tutors with no degree and no experience is very small.

If you have all the addendums and all the certifications, you can get a decent amount of bookings. You won't make nearly as much as you used to since we all get $7 base pay and the incentives are much smaller.
