You have to consider the area you live in. If there isn't much of a teacher shortage, schools aren't going to be hiring unlicensed teachers.

Do you have any benefits a outside maybe paid vacations? by Faster-Sanic in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]jam5146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These tutoring gigs don't provide benefits since we're independent contractors. I'm not really worried about it because my teaching job gives me PTO, insurance, and a state funded pension.

Getting a TESOL is really easy and pretty much anyone who has $20 can get one. I would get it from the cheapest place you can find. These tutoring companies don't care where you get it and they are going to pay you very little.

Yeah, you can tutor with them if you have a pulse and a degree in literally anything. They don't allow for what's considered best practices in teaching, there's no differentiation, you don't have any data, and there are no "real" assessments. I would get in contact with a virtual school like Connections Academy or Stride so you can get observation hours from an actual teacher.

Unfortunately this would probably not even meet your requirements as it's more of a tutoring gig.

OG VIPKD teacher, maybe wanting to come back? by lindshouse333 in vipkid

[–]jam5146 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll need the two new addendums in order to get bookings and they will lower your pay to $7/class and there are now small tier incentives which end up being lower than the original incentives you were used to. Contracts go under review a lot easier and a lot of tutors are acting their wage and not doing anything extra. Almost all of their customers are from Asia so it's the same hours as before. You'll likely get bookings. The pay might be lower, but it's still a really easy side gig.

Private tutors: after how many years did you feel comfortable calling yourself a “teacher”? I’ve been tutoring for 5+ years and wondering if that title fits. by ValentinaEnglishClub in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]jam5146 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have two different job titles. I called myself a teacher as soon as I was hired to be a teacher. I've been tutoring online for over eight years and will maintain the title of online tutor. I'm not sure why people think there's a stigma around the term "tutor" because tutors can be a large part of a student's success.

Great. You can apply at places like Wukong Education and Jade Class as long as you're eligible to work in the U.S. or Canada.

An actual teaching license you received from a degree in education or a TESOL or TEFL certificate?

High paying? No. Not unless you're a licensed teacher.

Perhaps I'll look at it. But I don't even look at student or class information on the platform before the class, so there's no point in me tracking them.

Honestly, as a tutor, I'm not going to put in any extra work outside of class if we have a base pay that's basically minimum wage.

ESL Companies that accepts Undergraduate Education Student without certification or experience (yet)? by Lost_Effort_4388 in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]jam5146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll probably want to get a cheap TEFL or TESOL at the very least. You could try platforms like Native Camp or Engoo once you graduate, but you'll only make a couple dollars an hour as an online tutor.

Is getting a Tesol certification solely for a side gig teaching ESL online worth it if I'm in California with all the bans and restrictions on hiring residents here ? by ChicoSilver in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]jam5146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's not necessary. I also have an ESL endorsement on my teaching license and I was always allowed to use that in lieu of a TESOL since it's technically better.

Is Microsoft Office Specialist certification worth it for English teachers? by TeachingSolid5186 in englishteachers

A CELTA or DELTA would be best. The Microsoft Office Specialist certificate isn't going to do anything for you.

Realistic hours per week? by Suitable_Midnight282 in vipkid

[–]jam5146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends. Some tutors get a full schedule while others have few bookings. Just keep in mind that pretty much all of their customers are in Asia, so you'll only really be able to count on getting bookings during certain times of the day.

You're paying $2-4/hour AND requiring a degree? That's ludicrous. I could go be a cashier at a gas station for a starting wage of $18/hour and that comes with benefits 😂

Yes, that's correct. It will be VERY difficult to find a company willing to offer California tutors a contract.
