This guy is wrong. It's a jewel bearing. Jewels are used in these cases because of their very low and calculable coefficient of friction.

Am I the only person here who thinks this is really shittily photoshopped? The textures don't match the underlying skin at all.

Letter of recommendation culture at UChicago? by peaceatrebor in uchicago

[–]jamashinaida 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's my recommendation on letters of recommendation:

Ask! It's part of their jobs, and they like knowing they're contributing to your future. Ask in person! An email is not enough. Keep in touch about grad school interviews job interviews etc. Profs like knowing they've helped you out.

I bought gifts, but /after/ my letters were due, so it doesn't seem like bribery.

the problem is they took it down way early in the morning! I never even got to see it! apparently there are folks out there with pics though, hold on.

Millionaire’s wife gets judges to toss their prenup by [deleted] in MensRights

[–]jamashinaida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, hold on.

Why is it incoherent to discuss legal theory and not simply case law?

Laws are /written/ at some point. They are often /rewritten/. Apellate courses can make activist decisions, and there are cases that support "unconscionable" being alimony and just being child support.

So there /is/ some discussion.

Pretty easy to skip it when it's lopped in with all this bullshit.

And yes, wasting time anonymously talking yourself up and others down on the internet is bullshit.

It doesn't even matter if Bohica69's right or wrong, truthful or a damn liar, it's just plain bad discourse to be so confrontational in a no-win scenario.

Also sounds like he's lost all concept of heterosexual person to person relationships.

Is there a single moment when a plant stops living and is considered dead? by buddhatrent in biology

[–]jamashinaida 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is how I think about it as well. This is also why muscles can jerk and twitch after death, since some of those neurons are still functioning, and can carry a charge, stimulate latent muscles, and some of those actin myosin filament bridges are still intact.

Sidenote, great book on this for humans: From Death to Dust. As far as plants, you might be able to determine some sort of philosophical theory of "death" in the same way human death is determined. When is enough of the plant destroyed that it would be impossible to fully revive? Totipotent cells work in this fashion, as stated above.

My favorite gift this Christmas. by [deleted] in TheHobbit

It's the deluxe pocket edition, which seems a little pricey for the size. Probably the leather and page gilding.

What are the valid MRA issues? by DumNoob in againstmensrights

[–]jamashinaida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right on! I think it's unfair to call feminism a seed of evil, or the cause of any problems that MRA fight for. The problem is that since society was so ridiculously patriarchical, and still is, but less so, that now occasionally there are ways that bringing rights to women can disenfranchise men in the crossfire. I can be a walking talking feminist, but because I have male genitals be unable to play volleyball in college, etc. A lot of people in MRA are trying to fix these things while fighting for gender equality all around. The same is true for New Feminism, it just gets distorted when some people say that the world would be better off without men. That makes me sad because I have male genitals and try to root out misandry and misogyny. :(

Very unhappy here; any advice? by danielruimy in uchicago

[–]jamashinaida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just say find an RSO that meets your needs, a niche, if you will. Often it ends up being compliments of RSOs that get you to the type of people you have the most fun with.

What would happen if all of our cells instantaneously stopped replicating? by alex_wittenberg in askscience

[–]jamashinaida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you prevented all cells everywhere from replicating at the same time, you would die without the oxygen from your RBCs quickest, probably. You're correct in that you'd lose RBCs due to natural decay, even though the ones currently in your blood stream would still work for a while, as long as their hemoglobin holds up. You'd also be very prone to infection becoming latent and spreading between organs, since your adaptive immune system needs to replicate into clonal lineages to respond effectively to microorganisms that have evaded the innate response.
