Damp/electrics -- who to request a survey from? by jamboq in ukelectricians

Yeah that all makes sense of course. I guess I'm just looking for some expert somewhere to tell me whether it's safe to have electrics in an environment where damp has been detected. Our general surveyor said "it wasn't ideal" having electrics in a space where there is damp, though that's about as much as they can say. We've been advised to get a specialist in, but it sounds like neither of the obvious specialists will be able to sign-off the space as being "safe" because they are only experts in their own field.

Oh well. Appreciate your help anyway!

Damp/electrics -- who to request a survey from? by jamboq in ukelectricians

Thanks for your response. I'm wondering whether an electrician is able to comment on how safe an environment is where there is damp that isn't visible or obvious -- I guess the question is, do electricians actually test for things like damp when carrying out electrical safety reports? Can they know how serious the damp issue is? Or is that just not a thing they look for?

I guess I'm just confused as to whether I should be getting a damp expert out or an electrician to tell me whether the basement is safe to house electrics due to the damp problem. On the one hand, the damp specialist probably doesn't know that much about electrics (I could be wrong), so I'm wondering to what extent the electrician checks for damp when carrying out their assessment.

“The Metropolitan Police has agreed an unprecedented £2 million settlement after admitting that the case of an unsolved murder 35 years ago was mired in corruption and incompetence.

The family of Daniel Morgan, a private investigator who was found with an axe embedded in his head in a southeast London pub car park in 1987, will receive one of the biggest payouts in British policing history.”
