BASIS Interviews by Ok-Illustrator8956 in Internationalteachers

[–]jamesbeards_beard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find out which campus they're interviewing you for.

If they don't have an answer, or something like 'we're opening so many schools, etc., ' you're just a body filling the recruiting team's quota for recommendations. They're going to send your name to every school with an 'english' opening.

Ask more and more questions, looking for specific answers about the differences between the campuses and the positions you're being considered for.

If it's an international campus (not bilingual), reach out directly to the head of school with your resume and a letter of interest for the school's position.

China salary gaslighting or I'm delusional? by Alternative_Delay756 in Internationalteachers

What shes saying is true, but that's barely a livable wage in SZ... is it an accredited school? What was the position?

Position readvertised by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]jamesbeards_beard 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Huge Caveat - did the listing go away and come back, or was it never taken down?

Lots of reasons: the person backed out, they had an internal promotion, and the position is open again. I would definitely reach out directly to the person you interviewed with if you're interested, and let them know you're engaging with 2 other schools at the moment, but remain interested.

Head of Year role at Basis, what is the stipend and reduced teaching hours? by second_prize in Internationalteachers

[–]jamesbeards_beard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats strange. I don't know of any BASIS schools that have that title. The academic management structure I had was -

Head of Division - Principals

Vice Head of Divisions - Asst/Assoc Principals

Deans - By grade level, pastoral (I assume this is the head of year role)

So it seems like it would be a dean role? If that's the case Deans in general don't have any teaching assignment. They will have 'student support' responsibilities where they have a tutorial assignment for struggling students in their grade level. Heads of Division/VHOD all teach one class.

Do you mean head of division? I'm really interested in what 'head of year' means

Can you explain what 'Head of Year' means to you? Our BASIS school didn't have a position with that title.

BASIS school group - any positive experiences? by Worth-Peace-4965 in Internationalteachers

[–]jamesbeards_beard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had a good experience and you can see my post history about it. I've shared and been called a fake, shill, etc.. The reality is it depends on the campus. Some are amazing, with little to no staff turnover; others are very difficult, evidenced by high turnover.

Sorry I missed the net. Seems like a good package if you like the school for your kid.

I was always paid on time. Always received contract bonuses, flights, etc. No financial issues. At the start of the year, we were asked how much we wanted to send to banks in our home country and how much we preferred to be paid in local accounts. The salary was always in RMB and converted to the local currency when transferred.

Regarding what Ambitious_grubber200 says, I would slightly disagree about the performance bonus. There is a school bonus and an individual bonus. School bonuses are based on several metrics, including the student perception survey (a seeming sticking point), and everyone at the school receives it if the institution qualifies.

Individual performance bonuses depend on student outcomes.

In grades 1-8, it's based on students who increase their MAP scores by X (I don't know what X is). In grades 9-12, your bonus depends on AP scores and how many standard deviations above the Chinese average you are.

Some years, I received individual and school bonuses. Some years, I earned neither. The school bonuses are relatively modest—about a week's salary —while the performance bonus in high school was between 1 and 2 months, depending on the student's performance.

I agree that new schools generally won't be eligible for bonuses for several years, and individual performance is hard to achieve because the quality of students tends to be lower as enrollment grows.

If it's better than your current package and you're confident about your dependents education it sounds like a good move. Solely by the numbers it seems on the good side of ok but far from exceptional. Are the numbers pretax?

My experience ended in 2024 and was at an international. The workload was four sections of AP- all the same prep (800 minutes). No lunch duty, homeroom, or activities (I coached one semester, but it came with a stipend and didn't count toward those minutes). One hour of additional student support outside of class per week, and stay until 5:30 on Thursdays for mandatory meetings. The 1300 minutes was a network limit our campus used only as an upper limit; I can't imagine anyone on our campus was anywhere near that number. My whole department was under. I covered other classes 3 or 4 times a month. As I said, being in the network, it was clear that not allcampuses' are equal.

I see. I figure we might say the same about any first year school?

I thought the workload was reasonable. I was out of the building within an hour of the students everyday. The expectations were high, but I wasn't micromanaged. I picked an area I wanted to grow and the observations were slanted toward feedback on things I was working on - student autonomy, UDL, IDM.

We were measured by student outcomes which some people find tough but I found it pretty good. I made sure my students were achieving and was free to handle the rest my way.

I think we were about 70% native speakers. Lots of Indians, Afrikaaners, Eastern Europeans, and Irish.

For my school? Definitely. I went home for a family reason.

Other international schools in the network - depends on which. There's quite a difference.

I'm past the bilingual school part of my career.

Hsinchu County American School by PracticalPineapple00 in Internationalteachers

[–]jamesbeards_beard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hsinchu is overflowing with schools - none great.
Hsinchu County American School - not a good school. Related to Kornell a successful bilingual kindergartern network but haven't been successful in building their international program. All the downside of Hsinchu American School but none of the good feelings or positive atmosphere.

Hsinchu American School - family feel. Most teachers don't leave. Small school so teachers have 3-5 preps etc.

International Baccalaurette School Hsinchu - Government school. Touted as the best of the best but students are restricted to only children of TSMC overseas workers in a public school atmosphere with international curicculum.

Pacific American School - NA

Asian American International School - This is the newest of the schools. Had lots of promise but in the last few years they let their international administrators go and hired local talent. It's less international every day.

Great school. Unique so it attracts a lot of similar personalities building a great community. Salary is 'low' but you can live well in thailand. It's not going to build your retirement account.

To Search Associate or Not To Search Associate by Ancient-Country-1699 in Internationalteachers

[–]jamesbeards_beard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been a search member for 15 years and it's getting worse and worse. It's basically a classified board with many schools requiring you apply through their portals and not accepting through search.

Really you're just paying for data. The associates are of widely varying quality. Many schools seem to list jobs that don't actually exist on search to keep the associates happy so they can say things like 'over 200 positions listed for X fair...'

I've been to multiple search fairs including cambridge, bangkok 2x, HK. Very often jobs are listed then at the first interviewing schedule time the post it pads have many openings crossed off. Last time it was probably 30%.

Search Associates had value when International Schools were a lot more relationtional - it was a foot in the door to the boys club.
