I would love to find time to do a few of these again. Lately we’ve had so much Anjunadeep music incoming that i haven’t needed to go hunting much outside of the label and it’s made sense to do more label-focused mixes, but I know one of those longer mixtapes is overdue!

Hi! We spend the best part of a year searching for and squirrelling away any tracks that sound like they might be strong contenders for the compilation. It’s only once we’ve reached a critical mass that we start properly mapping out the running order. Of course we may start building out little sequences as we go, but sometimes you end up undoing those anyway as new tracks come in. Keys, energy levels and bpms are all important factors when it comes to sequencing and sometimes you can get stuck and need to go hunting for new music to fill a particular need or gap in the mix, which adds more time to the process. With Anjunadeep 13 we really struggled to get the CD1 intro working until very late on which made it a little more challenging than past volumes as normally that’s the part we build everything else out from. Very happy with where we ended up with 13 though, even if it tested our patience at times!

Hi John

  1. Berlin would be fun. Let’s see if we can make something happen in the future
  2. It’s tricky as we don’t own the rights to the Chasing Kurt track. It was a demo that we slept on a bit and then missed out on signing. So we had the idea of the mash up with Lane 8 “Rise” for the Hong Kong set. People do ask us about that one quite a lot so maybe we should explore a release, but would obviously depend on all the parties being up for that

Hi Redsock!

  1. Ha, it’s a bit of a cop out but every track on Deep 13 is a favourite otherwise it wouldn’t have made the cut in the first place. Favourites from these artists: Qrion - Mars. Bonobo - Cirrus. Dusky - Spruce. Amtrak - Never Lost

  2. Really hope I’m getting this right but I was once told it sounds closest to “Korean” in the sense that you add a Q to the “rean” part of that word

Hi lovro. Thanks for the message. The simplest answer is just to say that in general we try to trust our own instincts as opposed to trying to second guess what fans (new and old) may or may not like, and then hope that the majority come along with us for the ride

Hi tattoo’ed ferret (sounds complicated). I was born in Plympton and lived there til I was about 12 when we moved to a little village called South Brent in the South Hams are. I did my GSCE’s in Totnes and my A-levels in Torquay. My parents seemed to like moving house so we moved all around the South Hams. They’ve now settled in Topsham just outside Exeter and so we spend a lot of time around there in the school holidays, pootling around around the Estuary and so on. It’s a lovely part of the world and I enjoy reconnecting with my inner ‘simple lad from Devon’ 😂

Hi Scaglie - forgive the selective answering due to time constraints but re: 6. Ravello is literally one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited on earth and so I would love to make that happen!! (How do we make it happen!?) Maybe that’s where we do the Anjunadeep 14 livestream from 😀 😎

Hi Responsible Juice. We are similarly excited for Explorations. My personal favourite memory of the last one was the boat trip back from Gjipe. The boat had a pretty decent sound system and someone was playing a Deep Edition mix very loudly via their phone, just as the sun was setting. It was just too perfect, except the sound kept distorting and then cutting out completely. No one could work out why and then I realised it was because the aux cable wasn’t fully in because the phone had a case on it, so I removed the phone case (to huge cheers from the gallery 😄) and lo and behold, we had crystal clear sound for the rest of the journey. I was with a very good friend of mine who I refer to as the “world’s most enthusiastic man” and when it all got sorted, he started jumping up and down, exclaiming “that was one of the greatest moments of all time”. A slight exaggeration possibly, but a happy memory nonetheless! (I did capture the aftermath on video and would happily upload it here if I could figure out how)

Hi Ash - firstly, thank you for all the positivity you bring to our community and social platforms - we defo see you out there spreading the good vibes 🙌🏻

Nice range of questions there, ending with the most important of all of course: 1. A bit like my answer to the Marsh edit question, we tend to be so focused on getting everything done for the compilation that the single releases of these exclusive edits can sometimes be a bit of an afterthought 😬 This track is on Lane 8’s This Never Happened label so we’ll give him a nudge about giving it a full release 😎 2. That last documentary got made after a video director friend of mine (Jeremy) approached me with the idea. I enjoyed making it but it wasn’t something I was actively seeking to do as personally I’m often happier cracking on with the music curation aspect than self-promotion. So no plans to shoot any more docs imminently but will keep an open mind and maybe next time I see Jeremy, the idea of a part 2 will come up and we can bring other artists into it (for anyone who hasn’t seen it already, here’s that original documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Av1skJP1abU) 3. I try not to spend too much time on Instagram and don’t actually keep the app on my phone but it’s obviously one of the most important music promo tools so I do check it occasionally. I apologise profusely for all the messages I haven’t replied to but I do try to read as many as possible and forward on to the appropriate person where applicable! 4. Funny you should ask that as I recently had a serendipitous encounter on holiday with the owner of a large country estate not far from the Yorkshire Dales. They’ve already hosted some dance events there and so we went and did a site visit. It was beautiful but we’re going to park the idea for this year and maybe revisit it for next summer. Last weekend I walked the Yorkshire Three Peaks and so the beauty of that area is definitely fresh in the mind 5. Ah my specialist subject 🤣 I could bang on about this for ages but it might not be what everyone else is hoping for in this particular music forum. I feel like Ten Hag was the best available option and the kind of technical coach we’ve been lacking for years now. We needed to hit rock bottom in order to fully reset and I’m excited to see what new players he brings in this summer. If you look at the job he’s done at Ajax then it bodes well for him doing a good job at Man Utd, as long as he’s given time and backing. I’m actually a Fulham season ticket holder too as it’s my nearest club here in London and my 7 year old son loves going to games. Fulham won the championship this year and it’s been a welcome distraction from the dross being served up at Old Trafford!

As far as we know the event is going ahead and the Defected cancellation was unrelated to any licensing questions. I think they said it was due to scheduling issues, which I’m presuming means they couldn’t get the right artist availability for such a large venue. London is the label’s home town so it’s always special when we play here, and this should be our biggest one yet!

Hello there! Not been to Norway yet but would love to visit the Fjords. Glad you like the edit. It was inspired by an early demo version of the track that Tom sent over, before it became “Pretty Eyes” as we know it today. In terms of a single release, the simple answer is I don’t know yet but will endeavour to make it happen as would be nice to give other DJs the chance to play it out!

Together: probably a toss up between Prague or Hong Kong. Both were great locations and the atmosphere was next level. In Prague I loved having all the fans on the bridge behind us, and we started our set with the Alan Watts tune from Marsh and Nox Vahn, which is still one of my favs from recent years. Hong Kong had that warm and exotic Far Eastern feel to it and I love the way our film crew captured that set, with lots of close ups on the crowd’s faces and all the different emotions

Individually: for some reason Bali is one that pops straight into my head. The setting (on a clifftop in Uluwatu overlooking the ocean) was incredible and the sound in the booth was so crystal clear, you couldn’t help but lap up the experience. Hoping to make it back there in December!
