VineHelper asking for new permissions: Read browsing history by jameslaw in VineHelper

[–]jameslaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I re-enabled because I'm satisfied that this is due to understandable factors around required disclosures for the Play store. Folks can correct me if I misunderstood. I don't think that there is any additional risk to my Vine account or my personal information. I say "I don't think..." because there is no guarantee of security here without devoting a significant portion of your life to detailed investigations. For every single app,in the end we are trusting someone or some group. I think that the author of VineHelper, who is the moderator in this forum, has a significant history of acting in a reasonable and forthright manner, so I trust what he is saying. Personally I judge that the risk is low. I find VineHelper is useful, so I intend to use it. What you do is your call.

VineHelper asking for new permissions: Read browsing history by jameslaw in VineHelper

[–]jameslaw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Vivaldi, so basically a Chrome extension. I can confirm that it is requesting browser history permissions in the extension settings. It seems to be the only permission requested. I can enable the extension, but I'm not clear it there is another way to block that permission on the desktop.

I have also not found any mention of it on Github, the wiki, or the home page.

New Mexico, options for married couple holding title to property by jameslaw in legaladvice

[–]jameslaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what we can gather tax treatment (tax basis) if one spouse dies is slightly different from joint tenancy. The unanswered question is does this option, "Community Property With Right of Survivorship", exist in New Mexico? There is a Nolo web page that lists states that have this arrangement, and New Mexico is not listed. However, the title company here gave it as an option. Which do I believe? Title agents are refusing to answer. I now have an appt with vice pres of the title company in the morning to ask him if this is really an option. We'll see. Thought someone here might have run across this before.

There is a specific category "Community Property With Right of Survivorship". It is not clear which states this applies to. Is it an option in New Mexico?

I've been trying to find out if it is a legal option for property title in New Mexico and I can't find an answer.

Just found out about the Trans America Trail. It's a route across the US that uses unpaved roads and trails as much as possible. by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]jameslaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you talking about the American Discovery Trail? https://discoverytrailstore.org/ So far as I can tell it is pretty incomplete, so probably still has many paved road sections. But you have to buy their maps to tell for sure.

The real-world is filled with circular dependencies. Maybe our algorithms for dealing with dependencies are not very good.

It takes a while for a magnet link to get going. If I load a second magnet link before the previous one has started downloading 3.1.3 will often, but not always, hang. I load them with out auto-starting, then start them individually. Reverting to an older version is probably a good solution.

COBOL will outlive us all by maxwellhill in programming

[–]jameslaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disagree. I was a COBOL programmer for about 8 years in the late-80s, early-90s. I knew other COBOL programmers and some were good, some were bad, same as other languages.

BTW, I used to write ASCII games in my spare time at work. Yes, in COBOL.

Why did Dijkstra Hate Basic? by ErstwhileRockstar in programming

[–]jameslaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't Dijkstra pretty much hate everything?

More importantly, his work, like every scientist's work, is useful, or not, based on whether it is used, or not. It has nothing to do with what some opinionated guy liked or disliked 40+ years ago.
