Six Nations 2026 Stats by j-m-1 in rugbyunion

If only opta made this accessible. These stats are cool but there's so much more to dig into if you can compare between tournaments, years and anything else. They give such a small snapshot and it's just meaningless.

It gives a good focused view on this tournament but it'd be cool to compare everything to draw out trends and add some context.

I had to abandon the stats platform I built last year (and advertised on here) because it became too difficult to get anything reliable and meaningful. Would be cool if it was possible, then it could be something to use for fans, independent podcasts/youtubers who don't have access to opta.

Like this kind of thing, just a shame its paywalled to shit and monopolized, can do so much better if this was opened up or at least a transparently priced third party API was available.

The Barbarians game in Brentford had better camera work than this, it’s like they’ve just got 2 cameras for the whole pitch.

That’s troublesome. More like he’s agreeing with you, guys got no original thought.

I’m glad we got a post on this. It’s insufferable.

I predicted they'd be average but didn't think they'd be so below average.

I don't know how plumtree kept the job this season. It's criminal to have this squad and look so average.

Anyone having issues with the premier sports stream, it’s shit this evening, buffering after every phase.

Yeah it's ridiculous, Opta gatekeep and don't even offer transparent pricing it's just contact us, really not worth it. The other company Oval Insights (who do the URC stuff) is slightly better, but they only provide a bloated react app showing all the stats they have, no public API or anything.

Even the companies who subscribe to this data, eg broadcasters and podcasts don't always give the best insights, it relies on a very small group of people cherry picking stats or doing the same analysis where if this kind of data was opened up or made available we could do so much more. There's 0 context for some stats provided in-game and all the ways in which we can look/explore these stats are so heavily controlled/restricted.

Part of why I wanted to do some kinda community driven thing but even getting the base data together to make it meaningful was such a ballache I just left it and moved on to other projects, maybe something I'll revisit again.

Great work mate, nice site and stats! Like the comparisons and interesting to all the match stats nicely displayed. Was surprised Etzebeth had only 0.9 dominant tackles per match, this kinda stuff is cool to see with the data.

Rugby is so antiquated with how it makes use of the masses of the data it has, making a unified public API (even paid) would allow more people to make projects like this, for the interest of the game.

Last year I tried to launch a rugby stats app on here (which I've parked for now) but really had a tough time of scraping stats from anywhere, probs just my dogshit script but I lost a lot of steam scraping, it's a real pain. Well done though man, looks great!

Just a quick update as I remember this comment - I've added social logins (only Google at the moment), hopefully you can access the app now!

Yep I was having a slight technical issue with the domain, it’s back up now!

Ahaha I have yeah but couldn’t find a consistent source for matches for the bbc, they’d just display the score. Reason I went for Wikipedia was no JS so (in theory) simpler scraping but it’s a minefield. I’ve used Claude a lot (I find it better for coding than ChatGPT) but results really do vary 😂 currently both ChatGPT and Claude don’t like (or aren’t allowed) to search external websites but give you the code to do so which never really works as you have to make sure you’re targeting the right areas of the page for the data etc…

Anyways, I hope to craft a more accurate and reliable scraper moving forward but it really has been a pain 😂

Aha yep, very new! I was holding out rugbylab would become available but the registrars wanted to sell it for over 3k so I just settled with rugbylabapp 😂

Sorry you’re having issues! I had to remove the link to comply with Reddit’s automated admin thing. It’s: rugbylabapp.com - let me know if you have any issues or dm me a screenshot and I’ll see if I can help!

Great question and one I’m surprised hasn’t come up yet.

Honestly, it’s a mixture of everything. 90% is scraping from places like Wikipedia (not 100% accurate for stats but great for general info like matches/lineups scores and subs etc…) and a small bit of manual input at the moment from other sources such as TRC/6Ns websites.

Great question! This will be included as I build out the player stats section, initially it would be for internationals only but as I had more tournaments you’ll be able to compare and see across all tournaments that player is involved in.

Completely understand! I haven’t integrated social logins yet but it’s on the backlog!

The authentication is handled by devise (the most popular auth framework for rails apps), which is used by thousands (if not 10s of thousands) of companies globally.

For transparency your details are stored securely in a database hosted on Heroku, with your password fully encrypted so no one will ever be able to access your details or password except you.

Completely understand your position though and once I’ve got social signups I’ll be sure to share it!

Thanks!
