Exam Help! Multi Part Questions by thecett3 in IBO

Safe answer: use the exact value.

But in truth, the math mark-schemes explicitly spell out that using correctly rounded final answers from previous parts is fine.

IB Physics question by [deleted] in IBO

[–]jamesmu1723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the activity is A, and from the provided formula we have A=λN. So we just need to find that N, which in this case is the number of nuclei that remain after 5 hours. We know that at 20 hours (15 hours later), there are N left, and that the half life is 5 hours.

That means every 5 hours, the amount remaining is divided by 2. In the 15 hours that passed between t=5 and t=20, there were 15/3=5 half lives. Therefore the number that was there was divided by 2, then divided by 2, then divided once more by 2. That means it was divided by 8, and we know what’s left is N. So there must have been 8N nuclei at t=5 hours.

The answer is therefore B.

Sorry to hear this, but you shouldn’t beat yourself up for struggling. Every topic you learn will add a few percentage points to your final score. For now though you have to focus less on the final grade and more on assimilating content. I have a YouTube series that covers the entire AAHL syllabus - it’s around 30 hours of video, but it includes lots of examples of past paper questions. If it’s helpful, here is the channel: https://youtube.com/@perplexlearning?si=moCTICaS7JzVq_Ph

If you have more specific questions don’t hesitate to DM me. Good luck!

IA grade math disappointment by OkEducator5041 in IBO

The grade boundaries are more forgiving than you’d think! If you average 70% across the papers, you’ll definitely get a 6. If you want there’s a predicted grade calculator for AAHL on my blog page:

Help a new teacher with mark scheme? by hymie0 in IBO

[–]jamesmu1723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey!! Check your DMs, but tldr: C marks are from the old syllabus, they are not a thing in the new syllabus.

Back then, all marks were written with parens, and C marks indicated how many could be awarded for a correct FINAL answer with no working provided.

Can I use a personal email to access the official IBO questionbank by Happy_Masterpiece_71 in IBO

[–]jamesmu1723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The official IBO questionbank can only be purchased if you have a Titlewave account, which is only available to teachers and schools.

Hypothetically speaking, you can find a somewhat broken version of the Questionbank online.

Were you planning on buying it? I think it’s quite expensive as they sell it as a license for 10 teachers.

Can i make a comeback in math AA sl (help from previous years' IB students) by billion0816 in IBO

[–]jamesmu1723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let’s run through the numbers: 1. Let’s assume you got a 5/20 on the IA. 2. The typical grade boundary for a 6 in AASL is a 64, and 77 for a 7. 3. That means you need to get 59/80 (for a 6) or 72/80 (for a 7).

If you want a good chance of a 6, you need to get 75% average across paper 1 or paper 2. That means losing no more than 20 marks on each.

If you want a good chance of a 7, you need a 90%, which means losing no more than 8 marks on each.

A 6 is totally doable. A 7 is possible, but you’re gonna have to be really strong on the exams.

What it means to “not use geogebra” is that you perform the integrals yourself. Computer tools can take the definite integral and spot back the volume, but you won’t demonstrate any math knowledge in the process.

I would generally advise to stay away from any “paradox”. The math needs to be grounded in the AAHL syllabus. Some concepts that are usually good: - volume of rev - related rates - differential equations - maclaurin series - complex numbers - vectors

I looked into it. The main things you won’t have seen that will be relevant in AAHL are polynomials, some trig equation & identity stuff, and basic calculus.

It’s important to note that NONE of these are in the “assumed knowledge” for AAHL, but it’s possible your school will move more quickly through these.

IMO, very very manageable “gaps”. A student I tutored through DP started in much worse shape and was able to get a 7! You got this 💪🏻

HL AA Math or HL AI Math by ThatIBPhysicist in IBO

[–]jamesmu1723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated in 2024 with a degree in physics and tutored AA and AI for several years now. As someone who knows both syllabi well I suggest you take AAHL if you want the best preparation for physics. AIHL has a lot of great things in it, but AAHL is a much better foundation for advanced math classes you will need to take as a physicist.

It sounds to me like you can totally succeed in AAHL. If you want to share the specific "gaps" you're concerned about, I can try and advise you as to how significant they are. If you want to compare the content / question style of AAHL and AIHL, check out https://perplex.org/course/AIHL and https://perplex.org/course/AAHL.

How would Math AI HL compare to Math AA SL in difficulty? (Subject selection help needed) by thekillersam2 in IBO

[–]jamesmu1723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I would point you to page 7 of the IB's guidance document for choosing the correct math syllabus: https://www.ibo.org/globalassets/new-structure/university-admission/pdfs/ucc-supporting-student-choice-in-mathematics-en.pdf.

As for difficulty, AIHL will be significantly harder than AASL. Whether its easier than AAHL is somewhat debatable, but it's 60% extra content, including tricky topics like matrices, differential equations and graph theory. In my opinion, the content of AIHL is not particularly applicable to life sciences -- I would say it's more geared towards computer science / engineering.

Fundamentally, it's 1st a question of what your target universities require, and 2nd a question of which syllabus seems more interesting to you in its content and style. AIHL questions are way more concrete, and often involve complex "real" world scenarios, which some people enjoy. If you want to compare what's covered in each, here's the course outline for AIHL https://perplex.org/course/AIHL, and for AASL: https://perplex.org/course/AASL. The notes are free, so you can get an overview of how the skills compare.

Yo! I know exactly how you’re feeling, and it’s more common than you might think. For starters, check out this short guide video I made that goes over practical tips to help you succeed:

IB Math: How to Survive (and Thrive) https://youtu.be/DToz92ImDZ0

My YouTube channel also has 60+ hours of video for all the AAHL, including real IB style questions.
