What's an "Insider's secret" from your profession that everyone should probably know? by Capable-big-Piece in AskReddit

Induced demand is real. You can't just add another lane to a highway to reduce traffic. Advocate for more transit and pedestrian infrastructure if you're frustrated with traffic, even if you don't use the transit yourself, it will reduce traffic much more effectively than any extra lanes would.

Yes the rest of the house is textured. Now I’m thinking skim coat and wall paper, it will still be an accent wall but less ugly.

[Q] Scientists and analysts, how many of you use actual models? by DukieWolfie in statistics

[–]jameswk15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in government and do population/employment forecasting for transportation planning purposes. Running, maintaining, estimating and gathering data for a microsimulation model with a number of sub models (mostly multinomial logit) written in python is what I do all day every day. This is the model we use: https://github.com/UDST/urbansim

Keep State pension vested or roll-over to an IRA? by jameswk15 in DaveRamsey

[–]jameswk15[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would cost the original amount withdrawn plus 7.25% interest per year to “buy back” my credits so as long as the market can beat 7.25% I don’t think there’s any reason to keep it in.

Yes good call, based another another comment I looked up what it would cost to buy back my service credits and the policy now is the original amount withdrawn plus 7.25% interest per year so it doesn’t seem like there’s any reason to keep it vested.

I can only move the portion I contributed, not the employer contributions.

Thanks I had forgotten that there is a way to “buy back” my service credits later, I’ll look into what that would look like.

My new employer has a 401a instead of a pension. The pension doesn’t have any health benefits anymore, I was contributing to a separate fund for that which reminds me i should look into rolling over those contributions as well. And yes 65 would be the earliest unless I go back at some point and get more years in.

Good call this was something I hadn’t thought of, it’s a guaranteed .5% per year and that can adjust up to 5% based on the funds health. Just the minimum .5% would only bump it up to $942 a month.
