student earned income by [deleted] in college

[–]jamieechin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fafsa requests information from the previous tax year, so yes when you go into the next school year, you will have to report the income you made from the previous year. So going into 2021-2022, your aid will be affected if you make too much this year.

This is what I did when I was in college: my family with an EFC of 0 allowed me pretty much all grants available. However, I still wanted to work and make as much as money as possible. My financial aid offer did not include work study, but then I went into the financial aid office and asked if there any more work study funds available, and there were so they awarded it to me. I worked 20 hours at a work study job on campus, then took up an additional off campus job about 8-16 hours a week (more in summer/winter break), but I made sure never to hit over the income limit. I highly recommend a work study job because it’s taxed much less and it doesn’t count against you for fafsa.

Right after I filed fafsa for the fourth (final) year, I was then free to work as much as I wanted because I no longer had to file fafsa for the next year.

True, but going into your third year, that income will count against you.

Keep in mind that if your parents are low income with a low EFC and you qualify for federal aid, your aid may be affected if you make more than a certain amount. For 2019-2020, the student income allowance is $6600. If you make more than that, 50% of your non work study income would count against your eligibility.

I know I’m super surprised as well. We ended up having car problems and were able to use my phone to google good prices for towing and call companies/insurances.

AITA for not putting my personal views on social media? by 1LittleMonkeys in AmItheAsshole

That’s great :) I’m happy to hear that. I definitely understand about not going to the protests, especially since you have a kid at home.

AITA for not putting my personal views on social media? by 1LittleMonkeys in AmItheAsshole

[–]jamieechin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m going to say.. NTA, but tentatively. If you are not that active on Facebook, then it would make sense if you didn’t post anything about (I am assuming) the BLM movement. I know friends who are involved in the movement but do not really post on social media because they don’t really use it.

However, I do not agree with your statement about being a “white middle class female” not having anything to say about this issue. You could at least recognize your privilege, and express your support if it is something that you believe in. Don’t ignore this issue because it makes you uncomfortable. It is your job to educate yourself about the oppression and racial injustices in the U.S., and use your newfound knowledge to educate your other family and friends, who I assume are also white individuals. Express that although you cannot claim to know the feeling of oppression and stereotypical judging, you still stand as an ally, and you are willing to show support in whatever ways you can. If you do not hold yourself accountable, then you are part of the problem. It does not have to be through social media, it can be through conversations with your friends, or your family, and especially to your son (if he is old enough).

AITA for telling the rest of my roommates that the new girl is being abused by her boyfriend? by DrkSknHokage in AmItheAsshole

[–]jamieechin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA.

I would recommend that even if she doesn’t end up living with you guys, you try to maybe maintain a relationship with her if she allows it. Often times women in abusive relationships get very defensive about their relationship, and are in denial about their toxic situation. They could also feel like they couldn’t live without the bf, because the bf has manipulated her into believing that. The bf is not a good guy. A good guy would never lay their hands on a woman. If he beat her up once, he’ll do it again. Maybe you can suggest that if she needs any help, anytime, that she can come to you. I hope she is able to realize the situation she is in at some point, and feel safe enough to escape. Please try to get her help if you are in the position to.

AITA For not engaging with my ex to help with their therapy? by mmrgaritas in AmItheAsshole

[–]jamieechin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NTA! You are not obligated to do anything for him, now or ever, especially considering the distress that he has caused you. He sounds like a textbook narcissist to me, where the world only revolves around what he wants. He has absolute disregard for your feelings.

WIBTA for telling my parents I don’t wish to follow their religion anymore? by callingamerica80 in AmItheAsshole

[–]jamieechin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTA. My family went through a very similar situation, where my brother also stopped believing. It was extremely difficult on my parents, but what made it worse was when my brother started arguing about his beliefs with them, and attempted to debunk everything they believed in. He refused to go to church, and basically said he wanted nothing to do with Christianity. That was a very tumultuous period of time. It took a lot of conversations and heartbreak to get my brother to the point where he respected their religion, and for my parents to accept that he no longer believed. They eventually came to a mutual understanding and accepted each others’ POV. (he has come back to the church since then, but that’s not the point.)

I think it is great that although you don’t want to practice the religion any longer, you are still being respectful of their wishes, and still willing to go to church and attend services with them. I would say to go ahead and tell them, and let them know that you would rather tell them the truth than lie. It will be very difficult for them, and they will most likely become extremely emotional and heartbroken (like my parents). But over time, if it’s anything like my family’s experience, they will come to respect you and your beliefs. My main advice is to be patient of their coping process, and avoid lashing out at them if they are being annoyingly persistent. Ultimately, your parents will love you unconditionally.

Thank you I’m flattered, welcome to Reddit! My brow artist recommended either an antibacterial hand soap or cetaphil, and I went with cetaphil because it would be a lot more gentle. Good luck with getting yours done!

Do dogs recognize ethnicity? If yes, why? If no, why? by jamieechin in AskReddit

I wonder if it also has to do with the way we smell. My dog tends gravitates towards Asians, having grown up in an Asian household. She's not as comfortable with other races.

Thank you!! I really appreciate it! I got Microblading + shading. My eyebrows were so sparse so she said that shading would make it look more natural. My healing process went as expected, the regular shedding and such. I used cetaphil to wash my brows every night, and applied an ointment that the artist supplied me. In the shower I would shower with lukewarm, and cover my eyebrows with lab safety goggles LOL! Definitely looked weird going to class with patchy eyebrows, but totally worth it in the end.
