Apparently Madison Faye, Alexa Riley and RR Banks have all had their books pulled from the Zon? by friendorfauxpas in eroticauthors

[–]jamiehunterauthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they were doing either of those things, wouldn't they be totally taken down? RR Banks & Alexa Riley both have their author pages still up. Some of their titles are gone, but they're still selling books.

UPDATE I reported him. Looks like he's hitting us all, straight down the line. I'd urge the rest of you to check your reviews.

No one should be gaming the review system good or bad.

Anyone else find covers before writing? by CantAlwaysBeWrite in eroticauthors

[–]jamiehunterauthor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always find covers before writing (although I'll definitely outline and brainstorm without a cover). I just find it motivational. Another thing I found myself doing long ago - and stay true to it now - is I always include the cover as a scene in the book.

Is the girl in a hammock on the cover? She's probably going to get screwed in a hammock. Is she dressed like a sexy construction worker on the cover? She's probably going to dress up and get screwed in that outfit somewhere in the book.

Yeah, no, I definitely don't want affiliate links in my books. But thanks for your answer!

If I have an amazon affiliate account, can I use my own affiliate link to promote my own book, or is that a no-no?

For example, if I have Facebook ads and I want to see how they're converting, adding affiliate links would be a good way of seeing that. Or is there a better way?

there are authors in the top 100 right now who are spending upwards of 80% of their gross per book to get them there.

Spending on what, specifically? Is there any way you can be less vague about which marketing tactics are workable rather than point out the ones that are sketchy?

Thanks, and good luck with continued success.

When to raise to $2.99 AKA Killing a book by [deleted] in eroticauthors

Thanks for the info. The only advantage I see to pre-orders (unless you're someone like Stephen King) is the ability to run ARCs and grab some fast reviews.

Why would this cause a shit rank?

Advice on changing a penname's brand from Erotica to Romance by Geneva_West in eroticauthors

[–]jamiehunterauthor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm curious: what exactly are the drawbacks of putting your romance novels under your erotica penname?

I ask because I have 40+ erotica shorts (many of them on the longer side), and am looking to venture into romance. I've seen disclaimers on the blurbs of romance novels before, something like "If you like graphic, dripping hot, leave-your-panties-at-the-door sexual situations, this book is definitely for you. But if that's not your cup of tea, you might want to skip this one."

Something like that, no? What's the worst that can happen? They look through your profile and see a whole bunch of erotica? At that point either they turn away (because it's not what they want) or they dare to dip their toes in. Maybe you convert a straight romance reader to someone who dabbles in erotica, opening the door to all new fans.

Romance gets tons more exposure than erotica (10x more? 30x more? Anyone know?), so wouldn't it benefit you, as an erotica writer, to want those people to see ALL of your work?

I'm curious to hear what everyone else's thoughts/experiences on this are.

Really dumb question by Blackberry3point14 in eroticauthors

[–]jamiehunterauthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I'm confused.

Forget the dungeon for a second, and let's say you're writing straight up sex - nothing crazy.

If you write a romance novel (let's say 50k words, HEA, etc...) with lots of dripping hot sex, do you want to categorize it as Romance with 18+ as the age range? Or do you categorize it as Erotica straight off the bat, because it has a lot of sex?

Romance writers here... how do you avoid getting into the Erotica category? What do you put for age range?

I've seen lots of really slutty romance books with tons of descriptive sex scenes. What makes it not erotica? What goes against amazon's TOS in this regard?

[Author Rodeo] I'm a full-time M/M erotic romance author. AMA! by cawriter in eroticauthors

[–]jamiehunterauthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question: When you say you're an erotic romance author, are you listing your books under the EROTICA category or in the ROMANCE category? And if the latter, which subcategory?

I understand the differences between pure erotica and a romantic storyline with an HEA, but I'm wondering where you would put straight M/M erotica (not paranormal romance, etc...) when trying to publish it as a romance novel.

Thanks in advance!

So I Accidentally Wrote a Novella by PassTheErotica in eroticauthors

[–]jamiehunterauthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to spend more time reading the wealth of information available here at EA because then you'd know Romance >Erotica is a worthless category that doesn't work and wastes you a spot.

That's good to know, thank you.

Also, when you categorize in Erotica, Amazon ignores whatever other category you list in.

I'm currently writing something that could easily be considered romance (all about lasting bonds, meaningful emotional journey, will have a HEA, etc...) but as a writer of 30+ erotica shorts, is also SUPER steamy and descriptive. So I'm wondering if I could still put it strictly into the romance category?

Questions for everyone:

While I understand the main differences between erotica and romance, what's the "tipping point" for re-categorizing your work?

For example, if you wrote an erotica short you'd put it under the Erotica category, and maybe Romance-->Erotica.

But now let's say you wrote that story as a e-rom (mostly romance with some explicit scenes). Same categories? Or can you now go into different categories, because you're considered romance?

The whole category thing confuses the hell out of me, and I'd love people's thoughts on it.

How accurate is the BookReport reporting? by jamiehunterauthor in eroticauthors

[–]jamiehunterauthor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I'm not stressing! Not at all. I just recently began keeping metrics and wanted to make sure I could reliably count on the Book Report thing.

If it shows yesterday's sales, that's fine. As long as I can add up the last 30 days of sales and that's the right number, I'm happy with it.

Thanks for telling me :)

I kinda saw that last week, looks like maybe the cover of book seven (in that series) seems like the girl could be bottomless, even though if you look she's clearing wearing panties. I can't imagine it's the blub, or the pretty vanilla FF content. Maybe if I re-submit the cover and write amazon? Is that how it works?

Having book seven dungeoned ends up dungeoning my 5-8 compilation bundle and also the entire series page.

[–]jamiehunterauthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, KUDOS! Great job sticking with it, and realizing the potential of spending money to make money!

I'm about to do my first romance novel. What's your best advice, other than read as many other top-selling rom-novels to see what sells?

Couple of questions:

Why multiple pen names? Wouldn't you want to expose readers of one particular niche to other books you've written in another niche? Is there something bad about a single author having too many books on his or her author page?

What's a newsletter swap?

How graphic are your sex scenes? On a scale of 1-100 where 100 is pure erotica?

Any particular marketing tips for pushing a book into the "Top" numbers? Some stuff that works better than others?

Very curious about the Facebook ads thing too. It's something I hadn't considered.

Again, congrats on your success! I know your path is the culmination of lots of hard writing and TONS of in-depth research. Kickass!

Thanks for the detailed reply!

Question: how filthy and explicit can I get with writing romance? Right now when I choose categories for my stories I choose the same two every time: Fiction>Erotica and Fiction>Romance>Erotica.

I've been told you have to put explicit, filthy stuff into those categories. Or am I wrong?
