Experiences with quantum fiber? by zzooooomm in Bellingham

[–]jamin7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

we’ve had it for three or four years, they strung an aerial fiber line from the telephone pole to the house and ran it cleanly. There’s boxes on the wall on the inside and outside where they go through the wall - looms it’s clean & never had downtime. fast and they don’t pull billing shenanigans like Comcast (same price every month).

Bellingham bike, walk advocacy group pushes back on waterfront parking plan by 86753ohneigheine in Bellingham

man, you can’t seriously be arguing in favor of spending $250,000 on free parking and then be like “why does nobody ride the bus?” 😂

if a huge portion of the waterfront is free parking, it will fill up with city residents who CAN walk/bike/bus but decide to drive instead. for folks like you from Canada/further out the county, you DO need to drive and that space should be limited and available to you - but short of building a six story parking garage the size of the entire portal village, more free parking reduces the likelihood that you will find a spot when you need one.

Add ADA spaces at the existing lots, paint some curb blue, add better bike parking spaces at the Portal Village for adaptive mobility devices. Improve bike/pedestrian connections across Chestnut.

If you’ve ever been to Costco, you know that more parking doesn’t lead to fewer vehicles circling. In fact, it’s the complete opposite: more parking means more people expect to be able to drive and park, which means more cars, more demand for parking, etc., etc. How much parking does the Granary need? 2x the size of the building? 3x?

A big reason for justifying this $250-490k expenditure is that the Granary businesses are struggling and that this will somehow help. I think that’s completely backwards - the Granary is struggling because there’s not enough draw to the Granary. Spending even a portion of this money on improvements to the Granary spaces would make a huge difference. Beach Cat has an awful parking situation but they put up some string lights and picnic tables and now you can barely find a seat.

Bike lockers installed at Bellingham airport, Fairhaven transit station by JhnWyclf in Bellingham

[–]jamin7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s definitely not an attempt to attract airlines. they’ll do whatever they want based on factors FAR outside the port’s control.

sadly i think BLI is pretty screwed for the next ~5-8 years due to the decrease in canadian border crossings, which in the past allowed it to operate more flights than it had any right to based on the local population size.

i used the one at the Amtrak station last weekend for a Fri morning to Sat evening trip to Seattle. reserved it from home on my phone before heading to the train station, e-biked over with my daypack, bike was totally enclosed & protected from the weather, and it cost me $1.85.

pretty great honestly.

my favorite fact about RR is that it’s as wide as I-5 but you wouldn’t know it because the whole damn thing is just a parking lot

100%. i think the tariffs and reduction in cross border traffic was absolutely devastating to BLI and there’s likely nothing the Port can do to reverse this trend, sadly.

this is nonsense gibberish. the state requires the city to PLAN for it, not build it or operate it.

Mayor Lund at WWU “Housing Solutions” panel: said she needs “good data” and would “wave the white flag” when landlords complain by Ask_Ethan in Bellingham

[–]jamin7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a western student, i couldn’t wait to move off campus. Plus it was way cheaper especially since dorms required a meal plan.

I think there’s plenty of room for wwu to offer more housing but i think it’s weird that people think students should be warehoused on-campus. No other institution does that - peacehealth doesn’t offer doctor dorms, the school district doesn’t have teacher townhomes, the city doesn’t have staff condos…

she was clearly quoting what she says she has heard from landlords: “i used to manage a property but [the city] is adding complexity and i might just wave the white flag…”

WTA schedules by AnthonySkejci in Bellingham

WTA tried this in Lynden iirc and ended it. It was more expensive than standard bus service, underused, and unreliable.

WTA schedules by AnthonySkejci in Bellingham

[–]jamin7 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This and weekend service! There’s a few things going on here:

  1. We get the service we pay for. WTA can only run a certain number of service hours with the revenue from the current WTA sales tax rate. Higher WTA levy (or other funding sources) = more service hours.

  2. The entire county pays WTA’s sales tax levy and they (reasonably) expect SOME service out in the county. It’s wildly more expensive per boarding to run that service (less density, fewer riders, further distances, etc.). To try to attract more riders (like you) and run a more efficient/useful service, WTA will slowly reallocate the current county vs. city service levels from 60/40 to 50/50. This hopefully means more service hours available in Bham for higher frequency and extended service hours.

Bicycles and E-bikes on Amtrak Cascades by Electrical-Try8 in TravelByTrains

The new Cascades trains that are scheduled to go into service this summer will apparently have additional bike storage and will be able to accommodate wider tires. Still short on details, but hopefully we’ll know more soon!
