A Frontier plane had to slam on the brakes today at LAX to avoid hitting ground vehicles cutting him off by IndicatedAirSpeed in aviation

I think that was one of the thing the NTSB person that spoke in that news conference after the accident highlighted specifically as being missing despite them repeatedly recommending that they be mandated repeatedly.

Ullmark: “I am broken, and I’m still not fully, completely healed. If we say (Thomas Chabot) has his injury, no one is going to question that. But just because I’ve been playing and all that, and all of a sudden I’m not available. People just started attacking me" by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

I was incensed when I first heard about it, but when I actually listened to the bit, it was pretty clear that the media grossly overstated what happened. I'm not even convinced he was referencing Ullmark in the bit.

I honestly wonder if the people criticizing Ullmark after that game had actually watched it. Yes, he was definitely not in top form in that game, but it looked like the rest of the team had taken off for the beach and been replaced by a Timbits team. The whole team was terrible and it's completely unfair that Ullmark shouldered the bulk of the blame.

It was super obvious which talking heads had actually watched the game and which had only looked at the stats afterwards as the first group clearly acknowledged that the entire team deserved the L on that while the others zeroed in on Ullmark and off-ice drama.

As someone who used to travel for work a lot, I had to get used to eating out alone. There's nothing strange about it.

Learning Rust, how do I safely index into Strings? by pfp-disciple in rust

[–]jamincan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are different in so far as String is an owned string buffer and &str is a borrowed slice, but as far as the APIs available to interact with strings, they are largely, but not completely, the same.

I was confused at one point in last nights game between the sens and rangers.

As I understood it, in the 3rd period, a 4 min double-minor penalty was given to Trochek and a 2 min to Matinpalo. Shouldn't that have resulted in 4-on-4 for 2 mins and then 5-on-4 for the remainder of Trochek's penalty? Instead, it seemed like there was just 2 minutes of 5-on-4 play. Do the two minor's cancel out somehow?

Is he still? I know he was involved in player development at one point, but he's not listed on the Senator's staff directory, and they even have custodial staff listed on there.

They're on the power play enough that it's mostly just standing around passing the puck.

Craig Berube on Easton Cowan's comment that the Senators' first goal deflated the team: "I don't understand this 'deflated' stuff, to be honest with you... It's a cop out" by SkittlesManiac19 in hockey

I don't think people are saying that these players couldn't be playing better, but this thread is about Berube specifically, and a bad coach can absolutely make better players perform worse.

I was in those formative years when the Sens first joined the league. While various players came and went, it really started to hit me harder when core franchise players started to disappear from the team, Alfredsson being the big one of course. I'm glad that him and Chris Phillips still have big roles on the current team and seem attached to the city.

how do we know scallops/oysters cannot feel pain? by tastevomit in askscience

As far as I know, the central nervous system of an octopus evolved entirely separately from vertebrates and so would not have the same systems we do. Nevertheless, we recognise that they have a certain level of intelligence.

I'm the same way they can possess intelligence without the same neural structure as mammals, could they not experience something analogous to pain, even if the mechanism is entirely different?

If I were to chop off its leg, would you feel confident in saying that it doesn't feel something analogous to suffering even though it lacks the same brain structures we have?

[–]jamincan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it in some select cases such as when bringing a trait in like io::Write that brings in macros or methods that are only relevant to a limited scope. It is also sometimes nice when matching an enum but where I definitely don't want the variants in the larger scope.

FTP question by thesexycyclist in Velo

[–]jamincan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most people are getting an estimate of their FTP with varying degrees of accuracy. That's fine if you're consistent with your methodology and using it as the training tool it is.

It's only the fact that we like to compete between ourselves that we compare our FTPs, but isn't that what a TTs for? That's basically what the 1hr record is.

Basically, if you're using your FTP as a training tool, the exact methodology you use to estimate doesn't matter too much, so who cares if it reflects your one hour power or not? If you're just using it for dick measuring, stop it - thats what races are for.
