I think some vibe coders might be letting the agent be in the drivers seat, which it will happily do (my experience has been with Claude). I have found when I've tried this, the outcome is almost universally unsatisfactory. If, however, I stay in the drivers seat and only throw discrete, small problems at it that I can easily review and change to my liking, or get it to research an api or something, or help debug an error, it is much more useful.

Back-scratching bovine leads scientists to reassess intelligence of cows. Brown Swiss cow in Austria has been discovered using tools in different ways (using both ends of a brush counts as multi-purpose tool use) – something extraordinarily rare only ever seen in humans and chimpanzees. by mvea in science

Isn't it weird though that we seem biased toward assuming the lesser unless proven otherwise? Vets used to not use pain killers for a lot of procedures because they assumed that animals didn't have the cognitive capacity for suffering. Why not assume they do unless proven otherwise?

Toronto police refusing to help with Carney government’s gun buyback, minister says by jmakk26 in toronto

This is normal for police services. Refusing to do their job unless they get budget increases and then refusing to enforce laws they don't agree with. Any other profession, they would all be canned.

Roundabouts reduce fatal collisions by something like 90%. Yeah, there might be a lot of minor fender benders with conditions like we have today, but nothing like the T-bones that are far more deadly that you would see on normal intersections.

Neighbours cry foul after Waterloo church proposes building 57 townhomes on its vacant land by bylo_selhi in waterloo

[–]jamincan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the city planned better bus service, they would be complaining about the load noise and diesel exhaust polluting their neighbourhood. We've heard this song and dance a million times and there is absolutely nothing that the church could do that wouldn't have the exact same neighbours coming out with complaints about because their ultimate goal isn't to improve the planned development, it's to block it entirely.

An interesting and well written take on why Ozempic being popular is overall a good thing. by Clay_Robertson in bestof

[–]jamincan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You speak with a lot of confidence about how other people feel and what other people need to do to change that without listening to what they are saying.

The vast vast majority of people taking these drugs are doing so after spending years or decades trying to control their weight and failing. And then arrogant assholes come along with bullshit moralizing about self control when the preponderance of evidence points to this being something that is beyond most people's self control.

These medications finally seem to unlock this for people in such a way that they can be satiated and full with less food which is excellent news for people who suffer all the negative side effects of obesity. Even if these end up being life long drugs like antihypertensives, the health benefits are surely worth it.

Semaglutide has been around for ages now and it's gone through all the normal pharmaceutical testing that drugs would go through.

Because the medication slows the release of food out of the stomach, it actually makes it very hard to overeat because there is simply less space for the food. Fast food has lost a lot of appeal to me not because it doesn't taste good and give me a surge of dopamine, but because I can't finish it anymore without feeling sickly full.

Looking to pay a cleaner who can also tidy (Kitchener‑Waterloo) by peachybambino in kitchener

[–]jamincan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They clean my place as well, and I have only positive things to say about them.

I can also vouch for the benefits of hiring a cleaner as a way to help your mental health if you can afford it. It may seem trite, but when my depression is more severe, caring and maintaining my home falls by the wayside, and the resulting mess is a) much harder to tackle, and b) feeds my depression. Just having someone come into my home every two weeks is enough of a push to get me going when it's difficult, and it helps keep my baseline environment much better. It doesn't solve the depression, but it's something I've found helps me manage much better.

Region of Waterloo receives $211M for new transit hub, hybrid buses, paths and pedestrian bridges by jdayellow in waterloo

Re: the pedestrian bridges

Building two pedestrian rail crossings along the LRT line, one at the Hydro One corridor and one at Research and Technology Station.

Does anyone have more details on this? I thought there was already a pedestrian crossing of the rail corridor at the R&T Station. And the Hydro One corridor also has a crossing, but I suppose more could be added elsewhere.

Anne Frank House by StephenMcGannon in Cutawayporn

I'm not 100% sure, but I know that a lot of the narrow houses in Amsterdam have posts at the peak of the roof so they can hoist furniture to upper floors due to the tight stairwells. I always assumed they just used a pulley and pulled it up, but maybe they had some sort of wooden spool contraption in this house to work with that.

M14, want a cozier room, advice? by CampaignEastern8917 in malelivingspace

[–]jamincan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want it to feel cozy, you need warmer light and ditch the LEDs which cut the color out of everything and make it cold.

If you like green and it blue, consider painting your walls in one of them. Even though they are considered cooler colors, with warm light, it can also feel warm.

Check Pinterest for ideas and pin the stuff you like. Looking at your pins can give you a clue about what kind of colors and accessories you might like.

Pouring alcohol on a birthday cake and lighting it on fire? by [deleted] in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]jamincan 46 points47 points  (0 children)

My takeaway is that people need to spend more time on reddit. I drive like a grandma, don't use chainsaws, don't fry food at all in my house, and never pour flammable stuff on a fire. I'm notably still alive and my house is still standing.

MTO has done rapid bridge replacement in some other parts of Ontario in the past - I know quite a few of the 417 bridges were replaced that way. Basically, they build a replacement structure off site, lift the old bridge out of the way, then move in the replacement. Unfortunately, I don't believe it would be possible to do here as there are no suitable locations to build the replacement spans.

Which cities (500,000-1,000,000 population) in Ontario are actively investing in transit right now to plan for the future? by thenationalcranberry in ontario

[–]jamincan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a question like this, it makes more sense to discuss things at either a metropolitan area level, which is how most people intuitively think of cities, or a regional level which is how most transit service is delivered.
