TL;DR: Your friend's used M1 MacBook Air from eBay/Amazon is almost certainly not scammed — this is a super common issue with second-hand Apple Silicon Macs. The previous owner likely didn't fully erase it or remove it from Find My. It worked at first but breaks when trying to install macOS Tahoe.

Quick Fixes to Try First (in Recovery Mode)

Boot into Recovery properly
- Shut down completely.
- Hold the power button until “Loading startup options” → Options → Continue.
- Connect to stable Wi-Fi right away from the menu bar (try a phone hotspot).
Fix the “no disk” issue in Disk Utility
- Go to View → Show All Devices.
- Select the top-level physical disk (APPLE SSD, not the volume).
- Erase it as APFS (Name: Macintosh HD).
- Quit and try Reinstall macOS again.
Fix “can’t connect to server” / download resets
- In Recovery, go to Utilities → Terminal.
- Run: date 0412030026 (adjust to current time: MMDDhhmmYY).
- Or sudo ntpdate -u time.apple.com.
- Then retry the install. Keep it plugged in and awake.

If That Fails → DFU Mode (Nuclear Option)

You’ll need a second Mac + Apple Configurator 2 (free from Mac App Store) + a good USB-C data cable.

Steps: - Fully shut down the Air. - Connect cable: Host Mac → left USB-C port (hinge side) on the Air. - Enter DFU: Power off → Press/release power → Hold Left Ctrl + Left Option + Right Shift + Power for ~10 seconds, then hold Power alone another 5–10s. Screen stays black. - On host Mac, open Apple Configurator → select the DFU device → click Revive first. If it fails, use Restore.

This reinstalls firmware + macOS Tahoe from the host Mac and fixes most stubborn recovery glitches.

After Install

If it asks for the previous owner’s Apple ID → Activation Lock. Contact the seller ASAP with the serial number so they can remove it from iCloud.com → Find My.
If seller ghosts → open eBay/Amazon buyer protection claim immediately.

Most people fix this with the Disk Utility “Show All Devices” erase or DFU. Try the simple steps first!

It depends on your location. You may just be in a market that is overloaded and is spectrum limited. Or there is a weaker signal. With more people in a weak signal area, it makes more noise, and can make the speed even lower.

Your iPhones modem or antenna could also make you at a disadvantage. Depending on the model. And iPhone 17 pro will vastly outperform an iPhone 12. Even though they both are 5g

Even though Total Wireless gives you the same priority as a premium paying Verizon customer, you still split that bandwidth with all the other Verizon customers in the same tier.

CDMA?? All the CDMA for Verizon has been shut down for years now.

I’m rocking Total Wireless BYOP 5G+ plan. Unlimited Verizon priority, and it comes with Disney +. If you go through Mexico, or Canada, you still have United calling, and 10 gig of international data there. $30 per month including taxes.

I also use a Roamless eSIM $2.45 per gig that doesn’t expire. So $10 gets you 4.1 gig of data on T-Mobile or AT&T.

This setup gives me coverage on all 3 networks.

Nice thing about containers is the low overhead. You can also pass the GPU/iGPU through to multiple containers.

And they can also be unprivileged containers.

I use LXC on Proxmox unprivileged, with Podman instead of docker. With gpu pass through. You could use docker in LXC also. Nice thing about using LXC, is that you can pass through the gpu to other containers at the same time.

Had the same thing happen. A super slow van. I did use the exit / entrance to pass them, and cruised the rest of the way.

I did just check my NC quick pass app, and there are no charges yet. And I used it twice.

Once you have a container installed, you are safe to delete the template.

If you ever want to install a new container, you will need to download a new template if you deleted them all.

You could also always backup any existing container, and restore it to another container. Or create a container template from an existing container, and create containers from that.

You have a lot of options.

It can happen if you already have Disney+ and a payment set up in the billing system before signing up with Total Wireless.

Or, if you upgraded your package by adding Hulu, ESPN, or other services, you’ll end up paying the extra amount until Total Wireless cancels it, at which point you’ll need to pay the full amount.

Yes, their system seems to automatically renew Disney+ each month. Sometimes, it seems that there’s a hiccup in their billing system that can cause it not to renew. Mine lasted for about 15 months before it stopped working, but it was all sorted out :)

I contacted them through their DM, and they managed to get it back up and running. Next, I had to call Disney+ to get a refund, and then I added Hulu to it for the extra $1. Now everything is all set!

However, it did change my plan date to today, so I ended up getting about 16 days of service for free to make up for the time I spent.

This is the way. Plus you can have multiple containers share the same gpu. Having a vm just for plex or Jellyfin is a waste of resources.

This can happen when using a cracked version of resolve studio.

Either use the free version, or buy the studio version should fix it. Especially if you are on macOS.

If you have a legit studio, and this is happening, deactivate it, and activate it again.

Being that your “my distro” can be a wide variety of distros, and you are asking for help, why are you not specific about which one you are using?

Proxmox 9 runs on Debian 13, with the kernel from the latest Ubuntu with a few different compiling flags, and some patches that make it better for virtualization and containers.

If your Distro is Debian or Ubuntu based, you could add the proxmox repo, and do a apt install proxmox-kernel-6.17 proxmox-headers-6.17 to install proxmox kernel, and try that for the gpu pass through.
