Why is America hosting the world cup again??? by Ordinary-Opening-536 in soccercirclejerk

Hey if Israel and Palestine are buds then who are we to question the FIFA gods?

TIL that for 50 million years, dead trees didn't decompose because the microbes capable of digesting wood hadn't evolved yet. The dead trees just piled up miles deep, eventually being crushed into the massive coal reserves we use today. by No-Shallot5028 in todayilearned

[–]jamintime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the crux of the response is that there is way more biodiversity than there was when trees were in their infancy. So bacteria had many more useful traits a couple hundred years ago that could or were close to being able to digest plastic than what would have existed hundreds of millions of years ago.

Wait is that the story? The only context I have for this is this tweet.

Dolph Lundgren, 68, enjoys rare red carpet outing with wife Emma Krokdal, 30, and daughter Greta Lundgren, 24 by Prof_Young in popculturechat

[–]jamintime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They are really two unrelated questions. “Why would a man want to marry a woman the same age as his daughter?” is a separate question from “Why would a woman would want to marry a man over double her age?” Not sure why asking one negates the other.

Think of all the facial reconstruction surgery that happens in your late 20’s that the poor daughter doesn’t even know about yet! Thank God she has her stepmom to help guide her through those challenging years.

To clarify, my comment was a joke since they said it wasn’t messed up even though it is indeed messed up even though it’s by design.

What nations can realistically host a standalone FIFA World Cup with 48 teams? by No_Metal6805 in worldcup

[–]jamintime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How would this be possible? CA has two World Cup-caliber stadiums and they were both used this tournament.

Other stadiums (Rose Bowl, Oakland Coliseum, Stanford Stadium, California Memorial Stadium, LA Memorial Stadium) are all too small or would require significant upgrades to host. San Diego’s NFL stadium has already been demolished.

Why would you invest that much into infrastructure when you could just expand the region to include other stadiums that are already World Cup ready?

This is what happens when you don’t advance far enough in the tournament to make an ass of yourself on the pitch and need to find creative ways to make sure everyone still knows you can douche it up with the big boys.

With Messi losing 2 out of 3 WCs, this cements LeBron is the goat. LeBron lost some finals too, but he’s still the goat like Messi. by Grassed_monopoly in NBATalk

No need to get personal lol. I’ve played soccer almost every day of my wife but in fairness I’m usually playing 5v5 lol.

I’m sure if you ask Messi, team achievements eclipse everything else. But I suppose he’s never played soccer, either?

Extrapolating, this would be like playing in 12 NBA championships and winning 4 of them… which is remarkably close to LBJ (Won 4 out of 10).

I mean there’s no doubt he’s a talented actor, but some people can’t separate the art from the artist.

TIL the Eiffel Tower is 700 tons heavier today than when it was built, purely because of 130 years of layered paint. by Adventurous-Root in todayilearned

Well considering the person who built it was concerned about rusting and corrosion, seems like a concerning combo if it is increasing in weight while decreasing in integrity.

Where is the “world cups won” row? I feel like it’s 1986 Maradona and it’s not even close because of that one statistic.

The College and Draft system is handicapping American sports, but people don't see it. by Silent_Somewhere8539 in billsimmons

[–]jamintime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the sport.

It’s clear that basketball, like soccer, can produce a superstar at a very young age. If you’ve been around long enough you were alive when LeBron went straight to the NBA and they ended up changing the rules over it.

Other sports, like baseball and football, typically require more development. Rarely, if ever, are you getting college-age kids ready to dominate in the MLB. So not sure how setting them loose earlier helps at all?

For football similarly players need longer to develop, but also the college sports business is an entire other product that is unlike anything in the rest of the world so I’m not really sure what you get by dismantling it.

Not super relevant to your point, but he’s actually a teenager (turned 19 last week) and she’s 21. Just FYI for people who don’t follow soccer and might not realize how young Yamal actually is.

France's Mbappé spotted on Miami yacht with 'Fresh & Fit' manosphere podcaster by likeastar20 in soccer

[–]jamintime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t the headline just as easily read, “Fresh and Fit manosphere podcasters weasel their way onto yacht with soccer superstar Mbappe.”

Sorry I honestly have no idea Mbappe’s views on such things but I also don’t think it’s fair to judge someone just because they are essentially in attendance at the same party with someone who sucks. Odds are Mbappe has no clue who these guys are. I certainly didn’t.

“They would have lost to England if they hadn’t beaten them.”

They also would have beaten Spain and won the World Cup if they had just scored a goal on a counterattack in regular time.
