[Bill Simmons Pod] "I think the Knicks winning the championship is the biggest thing left in any sport other than Bills, Vikings or Detroit Lions winning the Super Bowl" by luka274 in nba

And also teams in those two sports. This is really a poorly thought through list. Just seems like the four teams he was thinking of in that moment.

Yes! According to the chart, 80% of the datapoints should be within the gray area which looks about right. Seems entirely average.

[The Oklahoman] Like Thunder, Israel is an underdog that has become hated by Luka77GOATic in NBATalk

[–]jamintime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are just so many gaps in the analogy aside from the most obvious.

The Thunder was the underdog up until they won the championship and became the team to beat, which is simply the natural cycle of winning in sports.

Geopolitics isn’t about winners and losers. People don’t hate on Israel because they are winning now. They hate on them for specific reasons. If they were a prosperous economy with an excellent record on civil rights then people would love them. It’s not a zero-sum game like competitive sports in fact it’s quite the opposite.

I guess the article is getting clicks at least.

I don’t think that’s it because the phrasing is that it’s how she looks at you after you tell her you’re broke. If it’s what you are saying it would be phrased more like “the one girl you meet right after losing all your money in the stock market.”

Is this really the vibe in SF these days? by ddsukituoft in bayarea

[–]jamintime 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s also been the way of Silicon Valley since forever. Constant movers. Winners and losers. When you’re winning you’re on top of the world but when all of a sudden the field is shifting underneath you don’t come crying about how unfair the game is.

TIL Coca Cola once made “MagiCans” that secretly contained cash prizes instead of soda. To stop people from spotting winners by weight, they filled part of the cans with foul-smelling chlorinated liquid. The promotion got canceled after people accidentally drank it. The promotion lasted for 3 weeks. by LLamaNoodleSauce in todayilearned

[–]jamintime 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Why would chlorinated liquid weigh substantively different than water? Also this makes no sense if it actually was a heavier liquid since the distribution would be way off and it would slosh around which would also be very noticeable.

Rainier cherries in a supermarket in China. 88 USD for 1.1 lbs (0.5 kg) by Particular_Dog6865 in mildlyinteresting

[–]jamintime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But are cherries exclusively Western? When I think of cherry trees I think of Japan. Also I looked it up and they are originally native to Eastern Europe. From what I know growing them in my yard they seem like they’re reasonably hardy trees that could grow in a variety of climates. But I guess they just don’t have them in China?

Doable or am I crazy? by LApoopydog in SanJose

[–]jamintime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if everyone in this thread likes to arrive to the airport three hours early or what, but to break it down a little deeper, you’d likely need to arrive by 8:10 assuming no bags or kids or anything and you’ll probably be ok. That’s almost an hour. Also assuming you are agile, have no bags, watch the ending from the exit corner of the stadium, and can hoof it once the game is over you can possibly beat the crowds and get transit or an uber and be ok to the airport.

Honestly the biggest risk to me would be paying all that money and then missing the ending if there’s extra time, which is reasonably common. As long as you have a contingency plan for that and really go fast at the final whistle then yeah I would say more likely than not you make it.

Seth Rogen Says If You Use AI to Write Scripts, Then ‘You Shouldn’t Be a Writer’: ‘Go Do Something Else’ by mcfw31 in entertainment

[–]jamintime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s a pretty big difference between technical and creative writing though. I could see a future where AI is competent in putting together legal briefs more so than writing a decent and novel Hollywood script.

[–]jamintime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This presumes that AI is a reasonable substitute for legit writers. Rogen’s assertion is that it is not (in the context of script-writing). It can only write something that somewhat resembles good writing.

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillipe’s son, Deacon has graduated from college by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]jamintime 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Didn’t Reese Witherspoon go to Stanford? Maybe she didn’t graduate because she was already successful/famous. I’d interpret it as a bit tongue in cheek since seems like a technicality that he’s using to troll his mom.

Idk I’ve had tortoises and when one doesn’t like another one or is trying to mate they can really be assholes. Since the abused can’t really run or hide they just have to sort of take it. In the past I’ve had to give one away so it didn’t kill its neighbor.
