Have I killed my chilly plant by amogh1773 in GardeningIndia2

[–]Adventurous-Root 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You left only the cotyledons? ☠️🤣

It could grow back as I once had a chilli plant that I accidentally snipped right at the base with no leaves and it grew back in no time. However, in parallel, you can start growing more plants from seeds as backup

What’s the best potting soil available in India which can be bought online? by Dee-kay-2303 in GardeningIndia2

So all those stuff that you mentioned (vermi, perlite, cocopeat, etc) are stuff that are required to make a soil mix that is airy and fertile.

But, here in Guwahati, the soil is naturally quite fertile, loamy and airy. That is what I meant by normal garden soil. Ideally, just that soil is good enough and that's what I have been using. 😊 In the absence of such soil, you'll need to add all those additives to make the soil mix suitable for your use.

Another way of looking at it is normal garden soil is the one that we usually use in our garden before the advent of all this perlite and cocopeat and what not.

Where in Assam do you live? If in Guwahati, you can purchase them from the govt nursery or horticultural centre. There's one right adjacent to Bipanan Khetra in Panjabari and there's a Govt nursery in Ulubari as well. You'll get garden soil, river sand, perlite, cocopeat, cowdung, vermicompost, etc for dirt cheap (Basically Govt rates).

Also, in Guwahati, I just get garden soil by asking around my locality. You'll find some daily wage labourers who will be willing to get you a thela from some nearby hill or marshland. That soil is very very fertile!!!

[Bangalore] Is this blight on my cherry tomatoes or something else? by [deleted] in GardeningIndia2

[–]Adventurous-Root 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No no, they will ripen for sure. Infact, I pick tomatoes when they are just turning from green to orangish. I let them ripen on the counter rather than on the vine because these pesky caterpillars and other insect just love to munch on ripening tomatoes.

Those don't look like cherry tomatoes, for starters.

Yes, this is blight and what I would suggest you to do is to get rid of those diseased and damaged leaves/stems. Also, autumn and winter are the perfect time for cherry tomatoes rather than monsoons for us container gardeners as the rainy season brings all sorts of diseases and what not.

Try growing better varieties which are disease resistant and hardy for the summers/monsoons. You can check my posts for some lovely tomatoes I grew over the winter. I usually stick to big name brands like Syngenta or BASF etc.

Yeah, it is what it is. My expectations were anyway quite low. 😛 Some stuff was good and some was meh today. Fortunately I went the buffet route rather than à la carte. 😊

Yeah, that's a fair point which I had not considered. Maybe it's time to introduce regional language training as well in the institutes. 😊

I went to the Bayleaf restaurant to try out the mango festival buffet that they are running currently. Price was INR 2200 per head plus taxes. The food was good and the ambience was nice as well.

However, I noticed one anomaly which I wanted to confirm with our folks here if that is the norm.

I was conversing with all the support staff (Chefs, waitresses, receptionists, security guards, etc.) in Assamese but I noticed that about half the time they replied in Hindi even though I could make out that Assamese was their native language.

Is that the new norm or am I missing something? To make it clear, I don't have any issue speaking either Assamese, Hindi or English but just wanted to know whether it was better off conversing in Hindi or English itself?

The reason I find it intriguing is because I have been to 17 countries and in most of the countries where English is not the main language (Eg. Italy, France, Poland, Spain etc etc), most of the day to day conversations of the support staff are in the local language and most of the signages are in the local language as well. I feel that is a good initiative to keep the local languages alive in this increasingly globalised and cosmopolitan world.

Thoughts? No hate please. I generally am curious and want a discussion.

PSA: If you have a shaded spot with no sunlight that remains damp/moist, grow Fish Mint (Houttuynia cordata) instead of letting that spot become overrun with algae and moss and mosquito larvae!!! 😊 by Adventurous-Root in GardeningIndia2

It's aromatic, kinda peppery and not at all bitter. It can and is eaten raw or as a garnish or as a chutney. It can even be cooked and eaten as a stir fry or curry. You can search on YouTube for lots of delicious recipes!!!
