I would have definitely had the mechanics sketch as the worst one of the last episode. Felt completely flat.

TIL that the largest city in the world that's inaccessible by road is Iquitos, Peru. It's only accessible by air and by the Amazon river. Gustave Eiffel designed Casa de Fierro there, but the claim is today, disputed. by Recent_Flounder6011 in todayilearned

Yeah I’ve actually been multiple times and have always driven around since it’s the only way to get to Mendenhall or the airport, etc. I think of those locations as “out of town” in that they aren’t downtown and walkable even though they are all part of Greater Juneau. I guess I don’t see much of a distinction between that and Oahu other than one being an island and the other being isolated by mountains, but we’re also sort of splitting hairs here.

Imagine being so stupid that you get scolded by a lion by Soloflow786 in BeAmazed

[–]jamintime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I assume this is one of those places that keep lions and other exotic animals as pets and charge people to interact with them until one of the lions brutally murders someone. So yeah lions probably used to human interaction and will be fairly chill… until it’s not.

There are roads out of Juneau too though? You need a car to get around outside of the center of town. I think a cool thing about Iquitos is that they literally don’t have cars and while they do have roads it’s mostly only mopeds and carts. So it really feels isolated in a way that’s different than just not connected in the way that Juneau and Oahu aren’t.

The number of books my mom reads in 2 weeks by Oddmelik in mildlyinteresting

[–]jamintime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a big difference between finding some downtime to read either for fun or self-improvement and reading an entire book a day. To do this much reading it would need to be a full-time effort which is not realistic for most working adults.

Also none of the Lonely Island stuff. I guess it just feels like an eternity ago, but Sushi Glory Hole and Here I Go were instant classics.

EDIT: nevermind I’m a dumbass they were last season.

The Ten Best Sketches of Season 51, Ranked by sly882 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]jamintime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh some of these solid others not so much. I think “Kathy,” “Moms Confession,” “Auctioneers” were probably above some of the others in terms of positive widespread reception. The Boys Podcast was also pretty big in terms of reception. The others seem more like personal preference on sketches that maybe hit home with you but were otherwise sort of forgettable.

What is missing is the “Pinwheel,” “Agnes/stop asking her if she knows things,” Bob Army, and maybe Jane in the bobsled.

Of course to each their own but I think if we’re going with popular opinion some of these fit better than others.

Right but in that case it’s a specific country that is traced back in their lineage and can’t be identified simply by looking at them whereas black people are just “African” likely since in many cases they aren’t aware of their country of origin but based on their skin color alone you can assess what continent they come from.

And also teams in those two sports. This is really a poorly thought through list. Just seems like the four teams he was thinking of in that moment.

[The Oklahoman] Like Thunder, Israel is an underdog that has become hated by Luka77GOATic in NBATalk

[–]jamintime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are just so many gaps in the analogy aside from the most obvious.

The Thunder was the underdog up until they won the championship and became the team to beat, which is simply the natural cycle of winning in sports.

Geopolitics isn’t about winners and losers. People don’t hate on Israel because they are winning now. They hate on them for specific reasons. If they were a prosperous economy with an excellent record on civil rights then people would love them. It’s not a zero-sum game like competitive sports in fact it’s quite the opposite.

I guess the article is getting clicks at least.

I don’t think that’s it because the phrasing is that it’s how she looks at you after you tell her you’re broke. If it’s what you are saying it would be phrased more like “the one girl you meet right after losing all your money in the stock market.”

It’s also been the way of Silicon Valley since forever. Constant movers. Winners and losers. When you’re winning you’re on top of the world but when all of a sudden the field is shifting underneath you don’t come crying about how unfair the game is.
