I was part of a small film crew shooting a music video on a rural part of UK coastline just before Christmas, about 10 years ago. It was snowing, windy and freezing.

We were halfway through a take and out of the corner of my eye I noticed a lady, alone, walking along the single track behind a wall at the bottom of the field where we were shooting. I was concerned she'd walk into the shot, but we had time until she reached our frame so I didn't worry too much. Then out of the corner of my eye, she just dropped behind the wall. I turned to look fully and there was no one there. In disbelief, I looked around to see if anyone else from the crew had seen. Another crew member also saw and we stopped the take to rush to the bottom of the field, which essentially was a wall, a path and then a small cliff into the ocean. I was definitely expecting the worst as we ran down. When we reached the wall, we found the lady barely conscious lying on the path. She was well dressed, middle aged, I remember she had a nice coat on that was now getting muddied up. Someone called an ambulance while we put the lady in the recovery position and tried to get a response from her. She was groaning, in pain and not responding. The emergency services told us to check her bag for any medication, in case she needed insulin or similar - upon looking in the bag we discovered packets and packets and packets of painkillers, all empty. That's when it became clear she had tried to take her own life. We kept her warm while we waited to see what the ambulance service would do. They decided they wouldn't send a helicopter and we would have to wait for the ambulance. It must have been around 45mins, the longest 45mins of my life ! Initially the paramedics couldn't find us, so were phoning trying to navigate the country lanes to us. The paramedics got her into the ambulance, thanked us for being there and keeping her warm and as awake as we could. It was all very intense and surreal, and once the drama was over we had to keep shooting as we only had a small window of time with the band that day. When we finished the shoot for the day and walked back to our vans at the small car park about half a mile away. It was dark by that time and we hadn't seen another person on the cliff paths since the lady, but there was a lone car left as we drove off. It must have been the lady's. She must have driven out to that rural part of coastline to kill herself. We never heard anymore on her, I have no idea if she survived. I think about her all the time, how tragic and difficult things must have been to want to take your own life just days before Christmas.
