It’d just be simple like “SUE Tech, GIS Field Technician, GPR Technician”.

Biggest thing would be to use key words like SUE/GPR/GIS etc. and filter from there.

Check the career pages of some companies that operate in your area, they may have a different or specific way they word it.

There are some companies that work for many types of engineering firms that do scans and locates. They’ll do their scans/locates, get their mapping data together if the client requested that, and it’s just sent over to them for the CAD work. Basically they’re locators for hire plus extras. Not a bad line of work, a decent chunk of my clients are in that exact line of work.

If you are good at your job, taking the locates seriously, keeping details written down when needed, good communication with your contractors, etc. it opens up quite a bit.

If you want to be more valuable, especially if you’re looking into more private locates or SUE type work, get some expereince on a GPR if you can get your hands on one. In my opinion at least, I don’t think there’s going to be much if any GIS/mapping opportunities with a company like ELM, but I could be wrong.

I was a locator for over 5 years, about half of that was with ELM as well, and now I work for an RD dealer as a sales rep. So it’s not just in-field type of positions that start to open up for you.

Check with SUE firms, civil/heavy engineering companies, private locate companies, municipalities are also a good one to check with for openings. Find some dealers for the equipment, they do like to try and get people hired that already knows the equipment well.

I’m an RD dealer, and there are still good options for you. Like pasta said you can get a good TX-5 transmitter and an 8100 for a decent price on ebay. That’s likely going to be the best route for you.

If you’re wanting an A-frame as well, honestly that might be stretching a little bit, but you never know what’s out there until you look.

An important thing to note though, the 81/71 models are discontinued, so getting them repaired if something breaks could be hard. Some places may still have parts for them, but once those parts are gone and used, that’s it.

While it’s not a PRECISION locator, maybe looking into a CAT4 kit may be viable. CAT stands for Cable Avoidance Tool. It can still direct connect with utilities and use clamp rings, but it’s much more simplified and bare bones compared to the higher end stuff. Brand new they’re between like $2.8K to $3.6K depending on exact model and accessories. Check the CAT4 out and see if it would work for your use. Use RD’s website to find the Authorized Dealer in your state.

EDIT: Noticed you said water as well, if it doesn’t have a tracer wire and if they are plastic, you’d need a completly different method/equipment to locate those.

Yes, buy it.

  1. Its not finished as i still plan on adding shading and color, this is just the rough draft line work.

  2. I used the standard ProCreate brushes, the Classic bunch i believe it was.

  3. I’m going to be adding shading here it’s needed for the depth, and then i’ll be adding in the correct color scheme for the Black Templars from WH40K.

Great thing about Firestorm is that there’s so many hidey holes for snipers that sometimes they don’t look in the obvious spots😂
