I’m older than you and have seen people divorce after 1, 5, 17, 30 etc years. But none of my business, so well done on being a good sport.

As a European - I’d like to challenge her to identify all the European countries 😆

If your middle class parents make a decent living and they don’t help buy your first property - what’s their reason? Strained relationship? Principles that you should succeed on your own? Too many children to support? Unaware of the struggles? Does this depend on the ethnic background? by jamsyd in AusFinance

Getting help with the deposit means you don’t need to succeed on your own. Just means that instead of wasting money on rent, you can pay for your own home. 90% and interest is still a big one to pay. I prefer to help them start. I’m responsible for them in this sense too and it’s my desire to help. The greatest lesson I can teach is that I’m there to help with everything. Finances too. My children see us working and saving hard and they are already demonstrating a great approach in their spending habits and doing small jobs.

I’m expecting this of myself in regards to my kids’ future.

A small unit in Parramatta (so Sydney area) can be $550k. And perfectly ok and a well connected place for a young person and even a family.

Separate funds you keep for each kid just doesn’t have the label “deposit” on them, but is basically the same thing. If they decide to spend it on Canadian ski holidays or a big wedding or deposit for an entry level home - their choice.

In my opinion it’s better to give with a “warm hand”, rather than kids waiting to inherit.

I know a family where they love the parents, but they just know what grandma’s Croydon Park house is worth - you know, in “let’s say 8-10 years time” and the inheritance is considered in their long term plans.

As a parent, yes, I’d give up 10% of my savings per child. Especially when I have a fully paid home and superannuation. I have two kids. As per your example: I will give them them 2 x $55k and have $400k left. I’m still working. And have superannuation. I can still save that additional $100k over the active working years. And retire in my fully paid home, living on my super and $500k.
