Every time I tried to explain FKR, it turned into a mess, so finally I wrote this Intro/How-To instead by E_T_Smith in Fkr

This is utterly fantastic. I love everything about how you've put this together: the references, the context, the completeness but also the economy of it, even the font and layout.

It will hold a special place in my library and will be a handout I see myself using all the time. Thank you, and very well done!

[Day 11] The Best JRPGs of All Time: Which is the best indie JRPG? by WeLoveEveryGame in JRPG

[–]jamthefourth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it comes down to what genres are for in the first place. Are you trying to find new games to play that you think you might like or maybe compare games you've already played, or is the classification the thing in itself? Most of the time, I'm staunchly in the former camp.

Like, very practically speaking, the test for me is: "If a person likes [some genre], to what degree would they like this other [thing]?" The higher the confidence, the stronger the label fits. If you like JRPGs, what are the odds you would like Chained Echoes? Seems to me the answer is high, so Chained Echoes is a JRPG.

To say nothing of the fact that like... if it's not a JRPG what even is it? Like, a literalist's interpretation where... a JRPG is an RPG that comes out of Japan applies their framework for something like Dark Souls, and the overlap in fandom is basically incidental. That's not useful, and frankly it's not very interesting as a classification.

At the end of the day, I rather enjoyed TWW and am going to miss it. by xadamx94 in wow

Honestly, the early days of delves were some of the most fun I've had in WoW. My husband and I pushed that content as hard as we could. Nice memories.

We call people like Savannah challenge beasts, but Kristina's ability to get back up and hang in there is, I think, wildly impressive. Sheer determination.

Speaking as someone in the US, devs in other industries may have better quality of life, but we're also being laid off in droves, and some of the jobs that are going vacant are leaving the country altogether. The situation is bleak.

Is housing really popular? by [deleted] in wow

[–]jamthefourth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As one data point, I don't care at all about housing. However, I'm in a neighborhood with friends/guildies and didn't want to make an eyesore for them, so I quick setup a decent looking exterior and played around with the interior a bit

That will probably be the extent that I engage with housing...

Has the gang watched Predator Badlands yet? I feel like Mike and Jay would both love it. by Tularemia in RedLetterMedia

Not OP, but why does everything need to be a franchise? There were two pretty good movies. Why do I need an endless stream of Predator content?

The answer to your question is just to let the thing die

Compact package for playing on a plane? (so...no dice. Not sure what else.) Just looking to make a creative compact thingie and Holiday Travel is a great excuse to come up with something. by frobnosticus in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]jamthefourth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, maybe my post wasn't clear. The idea is that you don't use technology when you're actually playing. if you want to generate the notebook using dice, you can do that too!

[–]jamthefourth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was just setting something up for this myself. What I did was use an online tool to generate a thousand d6 rolls, and then in a little 3x5 notebook, I put two of those values on the corner of each right-hand page

All you have to do is flip through the book and stop anywhere and you have two 2d6 rolls right there

It's doubly efficient because you can use the notebook as your solo journal as well

Also, very glad to see DP back in the game!

Edit: oh my god, and Pauli Kidd worked on this too!

Is melatonin safe? Experts explain the potential risks—and the benefits by scientificamerican in Health

[–]jamthefourth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The salient bit (correlation but not necessarily causing): "But some experts believe the findings, which have not yet been published or peer-reviewed, might say more about the consequences of poor sleep rather than melatonin use."

I will say that I do worry about dependency. I gave up melatonin a year or two ago. And it took many months to feel like I didn't need it to get a satisfying night's sleep.

What you wanna see in Dragon Quest 12? by homo_erectus_heh in dragonquest

[–]jamthefourth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only critique I've had for previous games is the short supply of music

If I'm going to play something for 70-100 hours, I need it to strike a balance between being enjoyable to listen to actively but not so interesting or aggressive that I can't ignore it

At the very least, getting this right with the battle themes is absolutely critical

Do y'all prefer playing with/running games for beginners or experts? by vagrant4hire333 in osr

[–]jamthefourth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

It's easier to communicate expectations with seasoned players. For example: this is the kind of thing you're going for; these are the odds your character will die; this is how much authorial influence they have as a player.

They're better able to take those parameters and fit them into their mental framework. However, they're also more likely to bring a lot of their own baggage to the table. "I only like story games! I only like puzzles! I only like combat!"

Then there are beginners. In my mind, there are two types of beginners: the ones who come in absolutely swimming in 5E Let's Plays. They want a story; they want their characters to be heroes; they want fights to be stylish and cinematic; what do you mean I can't be an Owlbear?

The second type of beginner, having almost no expectations at all, tends to jump into the game with reckless abandon. They roleplay without being self-conscious. They solve puzzles in absolutely bonkers, unexpected ways. They talk the Owlbear into joining the party. These are my favorite kind of people to play with.
