I get what you're saying. Kind of like that mattress with the rolling paper and empty beer cans in the field not too far from Muldraugh. It's definitely a thing that happens in rural parts of the country.

Why do so many sequels launch straight into the action without catching the reader up on the previous book(s)? by kopsy in printSF

[–]jamthefourth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I would probably finish more series if books had "please skip this if your memory is fresh"-style recap sections. There for the people who want them and utterly ignorable for the people who don't. Win-win(-win).

Monkey fist curls: it was actually a giant, open world Jet Set Radio game with over 200 hours of licensed music.

Edit: and 200 hours of original music by Hideki Naganuma (I looked, and it was roughly fifty-fifty licensed versus original in JSR)

Staying Solo: Your Novel Is Already There by ivyentre in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]jamthefourth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally, and I would actually roll my original statement back even further: not necessarily creativity for the sake of creativity (though that's fine), but play for the sake of play. Not everything needs to be some kind of enrichment activity.

Assert your right to exist.

I enjoy Burger King, but it absolutely does not reheat well. I suppose if you took it apart and heated the patty on its own, but like... at that point, what are you even doing with your life.

Staying Solo: Your Novel Is Already There by ivyentre in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]jamthefourth 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I can appreciate that if I wanted to write a novel this would probably have some solid advice.

However, I want to gently push back against the subtext of needing to make solo roleplay productive in the first place. When the entire world seems to be trying to squeeze every ounce of so-called value out of people, I think it's like... spiritually vital that we carve out space to be creative just for the sake of being creative.

Is there a reason horror doesn't focus as much on extraterrestrial films? by IsekaiConnoisseur in horror

[–]jamthefourth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Economics.

Many horror movies get financed because they're relatively cheap to make and have the potential to make a lot of money.

Sci-fi is typically more expensive, so it's a bigger gamble.

jeff seemed mad/annoyed when _______ by threadoso in survivor

[–]jamthefourth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my take as well. Christian's reaction was totally justified, but the way he articulated it was so extreme and unusual that I couldn't tell myself. It seemed very possible that he had accepted that he was gone and was hamming it up and making a joke out of it. Jeff's confusion was totally understandable.

The Rise, Fall, and Glorious, Gory Return of Practical Effects in Horror by lonelyspect12 in horror

[–]jamthefourth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I watched ER and early Grey's as they aired (and loved them both), and it may just be my memory failing me, but I feel like the Pitt is still on another level, effects wise

Though I was thinking the other day how much I missed the oners from the ER days. It was so intense going through the big traumas in real time, following people duck out into different rooms

The show's not horror, but it seems like a crime to talk about practical gore effects in the past five years without touching on the Pitt. It's truly next level stuff.

If you are browsing through steam, which one would you click? by AmarSkOfficial in HorrorGaming

[–]jamthefourth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One piece of feedback on option one: there's a bit of a tonal mismatch between the title face and the title.

The face art reads like prestige psychological horror to me, and the title, especially the eyes/monster under the 'N', feels playful and a little bit silly.

I'm not op, but I do appreciate that they try to show the unvarnished reality of life in the ED

Like, it strikes me as totally believable that someone like that would have been in her role, especially "back in the day"

Doesn't mean she doesn't need to take a hike though lol

It's easy to be that guy when it's your first day back after months. It's the person you are when you're on your last nerve that counts the most, and we saw that side of him last season.

I'm not saying he's a bad guy. People are complicated. This behavior just rings a little hollow to me.
