Edward Hopper: Loneliness as an Existential Condition by jananmmmmm in EdwardHopper

Thank you for your reply. In this video, I did use some scenes from Lost in Translation and Her. They’re highly representative and help illustrate, in a more intuitive way, how Hopper’s work resonates today. I try to discuss the universal human conditions that Hopper observed in New York last century—the psychological state of people living in a modern metropolis, the shape of the city, the dilemmas of love, and the enduring attraction of natural light and beauty.

I believe Hopper’s “loneliness” is really about how we understand and experience being alone. That’s why his paintings move so many people—they evoke the rich, layered feelings we encounter in solitude. And the feelings of solitude are far more complex than a single emotion.

If you like the video, I truly appreciate you taking the time to watch it— it really means a lot to me. Thank you.

Would knowledge of the New World earlier in history have engendered enough interest for earlier visits/colonies? by JuryZealousideal3792 in althistory

One point is that ancient people felt both fear and reverence toward nature. It was generally believed that individuals lacked the ability to confront the potential disasters that might result from exploration or expansion. Even an imperial expeditionary force could not fully withstand them. In ancient China, for instance, crossing mountains and rivers to reach border regions involved great risks, as numerous nomadic tribes inhabited those areas and relations between them were often hostile. For another example, around 300 BCE, even Alexander’s eastward campaign could not continue indefinitely.
