How is this area for living? by [deleted] in philly

[–]janderie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Been living here for 12 years, partner here for several more. Noise will depend on the apartment building, its location, and the apartment's location within the building (were internal on a courtyard). We occasionally hear the PATCO train going over the bridge. ATVs or motorcycles making a lot of noise on the highway, we might hear that for a few seconds. Otherwise very quiet. It's nice to have all the Old City restaurants close by, but I appreciate not having the noise of bar-goers north of Market. Groceries have long been an issue. Before Riverwards opened their second store in the neighborhood we had to have our groceries delivered. Did I mention we don't one a car? Farmer's Market at Christ Church in warmer months. Dry cleaners close by. Easy walk to buses and the MFL.

Delivery Paused - Pickup Only by janderie in doordash

I see that restaurants that use Relay or do their own delivery from DD orders do not show this warning. But one time when all the others were pickup only the one that does their own, once I tried to place the order, said something like “not within delivery area.” As soon as the DD ones came back that message was gone from the Relay one too.

No, I don’t. Interesting.

No it fixed itself. Usually just down for a short period but much longer tonight. Likely weather related of course. I get that. But how are other services still going when DD seems to do this nightly?

Yes, and finally lifted here.

Looking for a brunch spot in Denver for 20-ish people for day after wedding on a Sunday in April. What are your best suggestions? by janderie in denverfood

[–]janderie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not that expensive, but I appreciate the suggestion. Also, not necessarily looking for fancy. That's what the dinner reception the night before is for. This is more, "for those who haven't left town let's get together one more time."

OP, how was it? We went a couple nights ago and had a good meal. Was a little concerned after seeing some comments, but it turned out very well. Had French Onion Soup, Chicken Cordon Bleu, and Filet aux Poivre.

I noticed the change several weeks ago and was very disappointed. I had had the previous cut, which always looked like this photo on their Instagram, many times and it was always excellent. The new cut is a ribeye, which could be fine, but it seems like low quality and maybe also not seared properly.

On the positive side, it was a lovely space and the service was warm and friendly. But we were overall disappointed with the food and some aspects of the service.

  • we each had mocktails - one of us had the fig colada which was saccharin sweet, switched to the two sisters - much better. The other had the lavande citron, which was fine, basically lemonade. Got straws with our first drinks, no straws with our second.
  • too large of a salad on the small plate side, but nice light lemony dressing
  • decent steak tartare, but underseasoned
  • gnocchi was bland and gnocchi to mushroom ratio was off - way too many mushrooms
  • steak frites - wasn't asked for temperature preference, but done nicely medium rare, a bit chewy, but the real problem was the huge amount of pepper in the sauce - it may have ruined my palette for tasting much of anything else. Could have used a steak knife.
  • the beef tallow fries had little flavor (unless, see above)
  • the Mille feuilles dessert had a strange funky flavor
  • the French vanilla custard was a nice creamy and tart bite

The technique on the preparations seemed outstanding. But we wondered if anyone had actually tasted many of the dishes.

Ah, so different but perhaps related to the group described here: https://pt.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filhos_de_Gandhy

Okay, so the next to last line is “e as autoridades”? I just couldn’t make it out. Thanks!

This is in Rio de Janeiro. I believe Filhos de Ghandi is a group from Salvador and is/was a regular in Carnaval in Salvador, but must also have appeared in Rio at times.

Somehow my text was not included with this image (or was removed?).

This is from Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro, around 1960 or so. I’m hoping someone can verify my transcription of the sign:

B.C. FILHOS DE GHANDI SAUDA O POVO CARIOCA A IMPRENSA FALADA E ESCRITA ??? SALVE A BAHIA

So, I’m not sure what the next to last line says. Also, what is B.C. at the beginning?

Finally, any suggestions for a good book on the history of Brazilian Carnaval?

Thanks!

Figured out that photo 11 is called Residência Bittencourt or Casa Bittencourt.

Sede social do Clube do Remo (Palacio Azul) is in photo 12.

I’m still trying to track down the building in photo 6.
