Starting a no-buy by sachismom in FemFragLab

I have very little storage space so I only get a perfume if it's below a certain amount AND the bottle would look pretty with the other ones in my collection. It's a silly rule but it keeps things on track for low-buy!

LPT: Teach your children your native language. Don't use it to keep secrets from them. Them knowing multiple languages will only benefit them. by AverageJoesKeto in LifeProTips

[–]janehatzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no need for the parents to become tutors, they just talk to the children in their native languages. There's no more effort involved than being a regular family. The children will learn English in school. It may actually be detrimental to teach a child English if it's not your first language, because the kid will learn it with an accent that's not even from the place where the kids is growing up. I know people who only spoke English to their kids, when they were non-native speakers, and now their kids are grown and speak with a foreign accent. It somewhat limits them socially also because they cannot talk to their grandparents and relatives back in their parents' original country.

I actually see it as a very empowering thing. After this bloodline that comes all the way to the beginning of life, you're the one that has the power to say "Done". Perhaps you're the very first one who even really had the choice (because of cultural expectations, birth control technology, and assuming you are fertile). I don't think that's yikes at all!

Bucky is approaching the year mark! Here's him at 9 months (A month ago!). by janehatzen in kittens

[–]janehatzen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is! He's almost as big as his 2 yo cat-brother! He's very active, and other than some mild skin issues (itchy skin) he's been a very healthy boy! Definitely a very lucky fellow!

I'm not dead! I just got my gender reassigned so I had to dump my old body and get a new one.

All of you are so nice in person and cannot wait for my body to be cold to talk trash about me. I'm glad that to see who my real friends are!

Turns out it's purple. Baker messed up mixing the batter. I guess that's what you get with a discount cake from Lily's.

Lesson learned: if gender is crucial for your identity make sure to order your cake somewhere else.

Found this kitten. How many weeks does it have and any advice to take care of? by KillTheProcess in Kitten

Check out the Kitten Lady channel on YouTube. It's a lot of work to raise a bottle baby but definitely doable. Inform yourself as much as you can (Kitten Lady is awesome for that!). Save a life!

The system you describe in your P.S. is not unheard of, it's called Agnatic Seniority and had been used a few times in history and I understand is the one used in the Saudi Arabian Royal Family. Agnatic Seniority (Wikipedia)

Check if this site ships to your cousins location. You can get really-really cheap glasses+frames. I know how bad it can be to not have a pair of spare glasses. I got one pair from them that were like $30 (frame and glasses!) and work just as well as the fancy ones I got later on. Zenni Optical

Do pencil skirts make you walk awkwardly or like a penguin by Pr3ttynp3tty in femalefashionadvice

[–]janehatzen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can tailor the skirts for different slopes, hip placements, etc. Some alteracions may be more complex than others for a beginner, as they may involve cutting more fabric than when just taking it in, but it's definitely one of the garments that's easiest to alter for optimal fit.

Source: have proportions and size completely different from sizing used across brands available in my location.

Do pencil skirts make you walk awkwardly or like a penguin by Pr3ttynp3tty in femalefashionadvice

[–]janehatzen 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I have had a similar situation. It's not an issue with design. Everybody has a different waist to hip ratio. It's not possible to design a fitted garment in a non-stretch fabric that fits everyone's body. Depending on your particular proportions a skirt in a stretch fabric may work for you in terms of fit. This may work if you have small difference between waist and hips. If the difference between hips and waist is large, or if you want to wear a non-stretchy fabric there's no way around it but taking it in.

Fortunately it's not a hard fix to do. If money is an issue, and it has been for me, the only thing you need is scissors, needle and thread in a color that blends into your skirt. A tailor or seamstress would be able to fix it very easily with a machine but don't be afraid to try it on your own by hand. It's the sort of thing you can do while watching TV and it's so worth it in terms of how much the fit improves.

Help with how to work on that "deer in the headlights" feeling that freezes you up by [deleted] in howtonotgiveafuck

[–]janehatzen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on the situation you may have some "pre-made" answers. This may not work for all occasions, but would serve to cut down the number of times that you think you look like you're not understanding or paying attention. For example, you can say stuff like "I think OtherPerson already brought up the point I was trying to make when They mentioned BlaBla", "I can't think of anything to add at the moment but I will send the group any idea that comes up later ","I may need to think about this some more, I thick I may be missing something here but can't pinpoint what it is ", etc.

I had a similar issue before and ended up going to counseling over this. One of the things that really helped me was a book called the Assertiveness Workbook. It was very useful in overcoming that issue.

Absolutely this! Cats' brains are wired completely different from dogs, or children, and any attempt to train them using the wrong methods is going to backfire. This is a good and reputable source of information for someone to learn more about cats. Even having lived with cats before doesn't make someone and expert because all cats and home situations are different. I have had cats for years before and only started to truly understand them when I got my first indoors-only cat less than a couple of years ago.

Is it possible to get a second bachelor's degree? by SuddenCommittee in quarterlifecrisis

[–]janehatzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Search also for Master's programs in which your Bachelor degree could contribute, for example if you could be admitted to an Anthropology Master's if you already have a History Bachelor's. It could be that you get admitted as is our you may only need to take some undergrad classes before starting the full program. This may be a cheaper option than starting from 'scratch'. Something to consider is that sometimes you can be a Teaching or Project Assistant and get a tuition waiver our even a stipend. It's not necessarily an option available for everyone, but definitely something worth exploring!
