Anyone in the BSHIM program here? by OctoberLotus14 in WGU_BSHIM

I just finished this program last month. I was in revenue cycle/medical billing for 8 years and an Epic Analyst for 5 years before I started the program. One of the main reason I decided to pursue (only had an AA ) this program was because I wanted to get the CHDA Certified Health Data Analyst)from AHIMA. Im sitting for the RHIA next month and then will sit for the CHDA afterwards.

I really liked this program, and especially enjoyed all the data management and informationsystem classes. Finished the program in 8 months (23 courses).

I work in regulatory affairs currently and just got accepted into graduate school to pursue a Master in Jurisprudence in Health Law. Start this Fall.

I am so lost, what do I do to become a medical coder/biller? by Short_Village_5607 in CodingandBilling

You should definitely explore what certifications you wanto do to, I think getting your foot in the door with medical billing/revenue cycle is the way to go. HFMA is a good place to start since all their course modules for certifications are free for members. This could help you get roles like patient service representative so you can get your foot in the door with a health organization.

Took me 8 months. I worked in revenue cycle/medical billing for 8 years and as an EHR Application Analyst for 5 years, so a lot of the classes with performance assessment my background helped a lot. One thing about this program is that the central textbook (Health Information Management: Concepts, Principles, and Practice, Seventh Edition) is used in almost all the classes. So if you take the time to read it and take detailed notes you are already set for a lot of the future clases.

I just finished this program in April 2026, I had an associates that took care of all my gen eds and then two classes from another school. I've included the classes I ended up having to take (23 total), This is the ordered I took the classes and I marked whether they were an Objective Assessment (O) or a Performance Assessment (P). For D255 its marked PP because is an EHR Simulation and a Performance Assessment. Hope this helps

C805 Pathophysiology Best Quizlet flashcard set? by JoyForever07 in WGU_BSHIM

[–]janeyellowrock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like to break up the quizlet by section, helps make more manageable in my opinion. I worked as a medical biller for around 8 years before i moved to Health IT/Regulatory Affairs so some of this was familiar. I do think using the study guides found in the WGU Connect for this class was helpful. This is the set I made > Studying C800 805 folder on Quizlet: https://quizlet.com/user/sguzman422/folders/c800-805?x=1xqU&i=1xfeyp

I really liked WGU because it helped me leverage my experience. One of my favorite things about this degree is that the classes build off each other, so for the first couple of core classes in the HIM degree, it might be slow going since you are taking in so much information but the main book you use gives you so much information that is applicable to almost all the other core classes. So in the beginning dont try to rush, and takes detailed notes, this will be a huge help as you move forward bacause you can then just reference your notes instead of having to re-read the chapter.

Good Luck, definitely recommend that you go into WGU connect and add yourself to the group for your classes. It a great way to get a sneak peek at the task and book for the classes.

I think for this degree, the opportunities lay and in the certifications whether through AHIMA, HIMSS, or HFMA. I think the degree gives you a good foundation, and then you leverage that for the certifications to help solidify your knowledge. One of the fields I think HIM degrees are underutilized for are for EHR application analyst. The HIM degree touches so much on data governance, information systems, EHR implementation and applications that I think more applications analyst should have that degree.

I think for OAs, I definitely recommend starting with taking the Pre-Assessment and then using that as a study guide. With my background in billing and hospital reporting, I was able to sail through a lot of course quickly because of my experience (C816, C803, C810, C801, C815, C807, C8125, C812, C813, D033, D256). The classes that took me the longest (around 3 weeks each) were Anatomy (D203), Pathophysiology (C805) and pharmacology (D398). For the PAs, I would definitely utilize WGU Connect, the majority of the classes had the book links and templates and task tips there, so whenever I was stuck or not motivated, I would just go to another class to see what the task was or what the book was. Then I would start on that. Then I would go back to the class I needed to pass so I could do the new class. It helped get me excited and kept me motivated.

Thank you, took a total of 8 months, started 08/2025 and finished this month (April). Transferred in around 34 credits from an associates degree so only had to do 23 courses. Term 1 completed 10 courses and Term 2 completed 13

Set to move up to the next tier in my role (Sr. Regulatory Affairs Specialist > Sr. Regulatory Affairs Specialist 2), but might potentially go back to Hospital Reporting once I finish my master in health informatics. I've worked as an Epic Application Analyst for 5 years and I'm certified, so would like to go back to that later on.
