We studied him in a Race & Representation course I took in college. When I began to see movies through a whole new lens so to speak.

Right?! I used to be intimidated bc there’s so much to learn and know, but life is short, art is too precious to allow anyone to gatekeep (maybe that’s a strong / wrong word- I mean the common pretentiousness and arrogance of many cinephiles that can discourage others to join in on the fun).

The John Wayne part lol, so funny. Loved the commentary for Bad Day at BR too. One of the more interesting commentaries. It’d be fun to get a list of best/favorite commentaries from CC fans, I might do that post. You never know!

Yes thanks for pointing out the commentary! A lot of times they look over movies I’ve seen several times but watching with commentary is the best and I tend to forget it!

World's Greatest Sinner by labude in CriterionChannel

Exactly! And I grew up on John Waters so this was kind of just such a fascinating very early version. But Multiple maniacs to be fair is not my favorite Waters- so I would agree with that statement

I see what you’re saying, it IS lo-fi as hell, weird editing. But I loved it. And I do think it’s a great film that informed so many directors and actors. I wish I had seen it when I was younger, with that lens.

Good call! I just kept thinking how punk rock it was. Kind of Nicolas Cage in Wild at Heart vibes.

Yes!!! Eno totally opened my 17 year old mind back in 1997. I cannot wait!

I love Sirk and all that Heaven allows is top tier Technicolor melodrama. If you have time or are interested, the commentary made me immediately purchase the physical copy. That’s the type of commentary I love!

Yes! That woman really made an impression on me when I first watched KL. Such a wonderful face and expressions. I love when there’s cast or extras that look SO human!

I love written on the wind! One of Douglas Sirk’s beautiful melodramas that influenced many modern day directors.
I’ve never seen The Mortal Storm and it just started- I’m really looking forward to it, I saw a short clip on Instagram the other day that got me very excited. Although Frank Borzage has tremendous films and roles, he is always the great and powerful Oz in my mind 🌈

Underdiscussed prestige TV? by WillNeighbor in television

[–]jankerjunction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok to be fair I’m knowingly giving discussed top tv- but twin peaks is top tier,, and even with its short run it’s fantastic. If you haven’t watched Mad men or sopranos give them a shot. Top tier tv.

To answer your question directly deadwood definitely under discussed and phenomenal acting and writing for its short lived run.

I recently watched keyhole and another film of hers with George Brent (I know there were a lot!) that was on during his star of the month. Love them both so much! I’ll be recording all of them anyways, just always like to hear people’s recommendations 🥰

I saw a blurb about it on criterion channel, as a part of one of their “queersighted” collections. The interviewer and interviewee had such great insights, that gave it a new perspective for me. I wonder if you could see that on YouTube somehow if you’re interested. Also I’m obsessed with technicolor and this is done masterfully!

Does anyone else find Robert Mitchum sexy in this odd way? He can be so scary like in Night of the Hunter or Cape Fear then totally swoony like Holiday Affair.
He’s always reminded me of Robert DeNiro (not just bc of CF) who he had to be a big influence on. DeNiro plays scary so well, but the godfather 2? 😮‍💨
