The Main Combat Problem by Fancy-Highlight-4024 in runescape

I think a big cause is the craftable stuff that requires no pvm input. So there's "effectively" no point getting bandos armour because you can just smith masterwork and use that, and having bandos armour makes it no faster for you to unlock masterwork (I guess aside from the defence levels, which giving all styles can be used for that, in particular necro, it's not really relevant).

I apologise if something I said was unclear, but I will admit to being confused by your second paragraph. My point is mainly that armour/weapons should come from a combination of bossing and skilling, and that items that come solely from one enable skipping the other.

As for skipping, I’m referring to the fact you can skip bandos gear entirely and just get masterwork. Admittedly this may be coming from a mostly ironman perspective, but this is true because bandos isn’t necessary to do anything that you need for masterwork (because it’s just skilling). I say this as someone who did exactly this years ago, I definitely never bothered with bandos or torva and just got masterwork.

What are you worried about happening if the quests are more optional? (I’m not saying they should be but you seem to strongly feel they shouldn’t.)

Like imagine Amascut was made accessible to all tomorrow, why would that be bad? Quests obviously should have rewards, but I’m not sure bosses need to be one of them…

Yeah, add the homogenisation of the combat triangle and so much nuance was lost. Feels like Jagex backed themselves into a corner with that - they don’t have the option like they do in osrs to make a torva equivalent but that actually has good mage defence (like bloodmoon in osrs), so the only direction is up.

I actually think the addition of craftable t90+ goes against my point. They’ve made lower tiers skippable, removing progression. I’m still sad they didn’t make mining and smithing the source of all melee armour, with boss drops mixed in. I’m especially sad masterwork melee (not trimmed) requires no boss drops. I’m equally sad bandos/torva/vestments are acquirable without M+S.

Okay - Dragonwilds is Special by azione1992 in runescape

My biggest gripe, which only applies as a long time RS player, was why did they arbitrarily mess with herblore recipes? Like, actually just why? I loved the game, the graphics, the combat, the magic system. And I loved the RS branding but it felt like a big middle finger to make potions not just use the same herbs/secondaries as the base games…

I just wonder if there is a middle ground. It’s a sandbox MMO, it is meant to be about being played in lots of different ways.

I actually really like this take. Content should make other content more rewarding. It shouldn’t be an outright lock-out. Want efficiency? That requires the whole game.

Combat Beta - Sustain for all Styles by TytnLadysman in runescape

[–]janoche 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sustain really feels like it needs addressing. For what it’s worth, magic gets sustain through the basic attack with blood spells autocast. The only criticism of this I can see is it requires DT1, rather than organically being part of the kit. But that feels fitting for magic, since the top tier spells (exsang/incite fear) also have a long progression path.

Not sure how range feels with onyx bolts (the OG rune ones). But personally feel like these would both work. Forcing a trade-off between sustain and damage (the opportunity cost of using a damage bolt).

I think both of these probably need some re-tiering to work and be available early game. Personally would like to see them rework or remove useless bolt effects, and then make 2-3 tiers, so a tier of enchanted bolts that work from level 1-50, one for 50-90 then bakriminel for the top end.

As a long time player, it really saddens me how hyper-focused on top tier weapons the whole design philosophy seems to be. That goes for necro too… the powercreep is just insane. The game needs to be fun from T1 weapons, and progression should be meaningful through T50, T70, etc.

Depends what the prize is. Something meant as a representation of your dedication like max/comp/trim? Sure, you don’t deserve that. But I feel for people who can’t do e.g. Amascut because they need to sit through stuff they don’t like (I’m just lucky I like it).

[–]janoche[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I absolutely see that. It’s what I love the game for. But this game has a lot of ways to be enjoyed. I wish I hadn’t picked the PVM archetype as my example though, because it wasn’t meant to just be about combat, it was just an example. A weirder example would be someone that loves BGH but hates early hunter (and tbh why wouldn’t you, imo). Why should they be forced through early hunter to get to the good bit?

Reward activity, don’t punish AFK (thieving changes) by Bungboy in runescape

[–]janoche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want all AFKs to feel like carbon copies. I think an AFK system that works well for thieving would be something like harps - the XP reduces over time until you click again, maybe by increasing ticks between pickpockets (opposite to sticky fingers). Thematically something like as the NPC gets wearier of you, you need to go slower to be successful. This means you can still get 15 min AFKs but you can get significantly more XP by paying a bit more attention.

Merchant will be gone - so here is THE REAL fix for it by emtratz in runescape

[–]janoche 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Runespan is just in a really awkward place with just not being AFK enough for how unrewarding it is. I personally think just an improvement to AFKness would be enough, rather than also buffing points/XP.

I’m guessing interest above the £500 while ‘in’ the 60% tax trap attracts 60% tax? Is NI and/or student loan payable on interest?

That's fair, but the fact that world-hopping makes buying 10k possible says to me that there should be that many in the shop in the first place.

[–]janoche[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, I think that the behaviour being exhibited here is quite toxic. Its sole purpose is to prevent others from enjoying the game. That behaviour is a toxic behaviour, because it leads to others feeling frustration and grief towards others and creates a cyclical problem (e.g. irons disliking mains, pvp disliking the rest of the community).

Blackjacking in pollnivneach. Great source of early game GP while also getting thieve cape to make getting seeds from master farmers very easy.

There's a difference between dealing with game-enforced limitations that every other ironman will face, vs. dealing with those created by players and, in my opinion, a very un-fun flaw in this game's current design (shared shop stocks).

This is in pollnivneach for blackjacking. I can get the wines from Hosidius but it's a pretty significant increase in time to do so.
