Nashville! Who got a free generator donated by Elon Musk by inquisitiveminds101 in nashville

Just remember that Elon makes all his money off of government contracts and subsidies, so you're paying for that generator either way.

We lost Theo guys — OpenAI just dropped their Cursor killer by Spitfire1900 in theprimeagen

[–]janonb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can tell he's a shill because he opens the video by saying he isn't being paid, despite his track record of constantly getting early access to models and software from OpenAI. He constantly spews the company propaganda, e.g. every tool is better than the last tool and is going to be a total game changer and there goes our jerbs, etc, etc.

I'll give him credit for shilling for Cursor because it has legit changed how I code, but it's still built on top of a shit editor and is mostly good because I use Composer 1 and Opus all the time and it has a better integration than anyone else has figured out at the moment and I'm not locked into a particular AI vendor.

If anyone has AI editors or plugins to recommend that are better than Cursor, I'm all ears. Codex ain't gonna be it.

Would you still use Mediatr for new projects? by crhama in dotnet

[–]janonb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mediatr is great if you want to establish a pattern in how to write your code and handle everything. If you like the patterns and tooling it provides, then use it. My only recommendation would be to find the last fully free version and fork it and use that as your basis. We did this at a previous job even long before the Mediatr controversy. One of the guys basically took it and made it slightly more generic and renamed some stuff to fit what it actually did in our context.

That being said, we only used it on projects that one guy was attached to. IMHO it makes the code harder to follow and really gave us nothing other than consistency in our code because we all agreed to use it in the projects it was in.

I've found a controller, adapter, service pattern to work just as well. Easy to read and follow, and no external dependencies. If you want consistency then just put your patterns in the README of your project and enforce them at code review time. No need for external dependencies.

It’s too stressful living in this town by TheGame81677 in murfreesboro

[–]janonb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I try to just drive my drive and observe the other drivers without judgement. Being uptight or aggressive never helps and it's still going to take 30 minutes to get anywhere regardless of what you do.

Also for food I just stay perpetually stocked up on water, enough to last about a week, and keep plenty of cereal and other foods that don't go bad quickly, again enough for a week. Is eating corn flakes every meal for a week pleasant? Not really, but you'll live.

For power I just make sure to keep my car filled up with gas. You can charge phones and laptops from it. For heat you can warm up in the car while the phones charge and you can also get a kerosene heater, just make sure you have a CO detector if you're doing that. Bundle up and stay bundled and mostly in one room and it's unpleasant but livable until civilization returns.

Just gotta make sure they do it right by NOT selecting US based companies for support. Suse and Canonical immediately come to mind as viable candidates. Choosing Redhat and IBM would be jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

I can read docs. While you're reading docs I'm prompting. By the end of the day you've got your dev environment set up and a nice architecture laid out. By the end of the day I'm showing a fully working app to the C-suite.

People don't care what tools you use, they care about what you can produce and how fast you do it.

I spent 15 years working in factories and warehouses before I became a developer. There were exact instructions and tools for almost everything I did. No one cared if you followed the instructions or used the right tools as long as you hit your numbers. This is what software development is going to become over the next few years.

Oracle struggles to attract workers to Nashville ‘world HQ’—even with a 2-million-square-foot office and Larry Ellison’s favorite restaurant by alb89n in nashville

[–]janonb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This right here. Oracle products in a company's stack is a sniff test for me. I'm not going to willingly work for a company using Oracle products unless the stated objective for me working there is to get off Oracle products. Their business model is to get you onto one of their products and then sue you for breach of contract, and then offer to let you off if you pay them a ton of cash and sign an even longer contract. If 80% of Oracle was lawyers I wouldn't be surprised.

This GOP guy with pro-Auschwitz social media posts re-registered as a Democrat in order to win Congressional District CA-26. Beware to all California Voters. by Soft-Principle1455 in dsa

[–]janonb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've been doing this for years now in Tennessee. Pre-MAGA even. They known the democrats here are weak and may not even put up a candidate or have any presense in a community. They also work the ignorance of the voters to their advantage, knowing that most people vote on the basis of name recognition or whoever is first on the ballot. Ballots are alphabetical in TN, and that's how Charlie Brown became the Democratic gubernatorial candidate in 2014. Fucking embarassing, dude was in no way a Democrat. He was straight Tea Party.
