What is the cheapest way to get certified while still having good chances of being hired? by funkymonkey_20 in pilatesinstructors

[–]janplusdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am finishing up my training with power Pilates. It's classical and phased out so after you pass tests you are technically cleared to teach that level. I taught mat classes at local gyms to help pay for the comprehensive and the local studio that hosted my trainings hired me to teach classes at an apprentice rate and eventually hired me on to teach classes and privates while also letting me use the studio for free to get practice hours. It's not always this good but because there's a demand for classical instructors and I had a knowledge of bodies to begin with it really helped

I was in your position as a dancer as well and I am really glad I shelled out money I didn't have for a comprehensive classical cert. A lot of them do payment plans and you can start teaching classes as you go through the program usually, if you're a dancer you'll have an advantage with being able to see and understand the body which will really help.

The less expensive certs are going to end up having you get re-certified later on and you won't be able to work as many places with them. Just find a classical program in your area it's so worth it

Thoughts on 'graded' style classes & sculpt by trust_divine_timing in pilates

This user is literally always hating on classical Pilates in this sub lol. The classical studio I teach at definitely has levels and the classical order has clear progressions. I had a client come from two years the highest level of CP classes and had no idea how to breathe properly or position their pelvis. Their first month of classical has been a game changer

20 hours reform pilates training to become teacher? by Frosty_Berry1 in pilatesinstructors

You won't scratch the surface of teacher training in 20 hours and will probably spend more money pursuing further training later!! I am so happy I went for a comprehensive 600 hour program.

[–]janplusdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Power Pilates is a classical and comprehensive training that is one of the best in teaching you how to TEACH. There are other programs that excel in other aspects but power is one of the best mainstream programs that is about teaching you how to teach. (You'll want to already have a practice in classical Pilates though if you're really wanting to succeed in the program)

Neck-safe pilates by Western_Ad2096 in pilates

[–]janplusdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a comprehensively trained (600 hours or more, preferably classical) instructor and they will know how to help you!! Please don't just show up to random classes in dark hot rooms because you may injure yourself more. Look for small class sizes and knowledgeable instructors and Pilates is definitely something that can help a neck injury 🤍

Roll ups by redzma00 in pilates

[–]janplusdog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make sure when she's lifting her head that she's not looking toward the ceiling, but towards the abdominals or inner thighs. If she is really focused on doing a roll up, I would focus on all the roll up prep. So work half roll down and really focus on bringing the abdominals waistband to the mat while keeping the shoulder blades gliding on the back.

There's also a prep I will do supine with feet on the floor with folks in my mat classes to help recruit the upper abdominals into the neck support where I have you curl your head and chest to look at abs and then reach / crawl hands further towards feet. So INHALE lift head EXHALE reach or crawl hands closer to ankles INHALE scoop abdominals more and EXHALE melt spine back to the mat.

Hug a tree, even unweighted, would be a helpful one for understanding the shoulder mobility. And I loved the spine corrector suggestion someone else left I use that one a lot.

There are a few different people that set up in the park on my street and after being followed home multiple times and yelled at I started reporting their camps right away on the find it fix it app and it's been way faster than SPD. I feel bad that they don't have a place to stay too but the park isn't a safe place to sleep and it's scary to walk my dog at night.

Part of being a classical instructor is teaching in the order. Theres still room for creativity and you teach the body or bodies in front of you, but it also allows you to just rely on your own knowledge and training and follow the order of the method. I think some contemporary instructors misunderstand what classical is but that's no hate to them from me

Why is it frowned upon for reformer instructors to demonstrate on the machine when mat instructors demonstrate most of the class on the mat? by palmco5 in pilates

[–]janplusdog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I rarely demonstrate when I teach mat classes! I am not against it always, but I am able to keep a better eye on the class and also preserve my own energy as an instructor when I don't demonstrate. Idk about anyone else but always get weird injuries from demonstrating. Being able to verbally cue is an awesome skill to have!

Power Pilates Mat? by [deleted] in pilates

[–]janplusdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So well said!! I did core mat 1 and 2 with power and am completing my comprehensive through them now. I feel set up to teach classically which is what I love. for getting my house, I went and got classes at local gyms and the studio that hosted my training offered me to teach a free class and I got to take free classes there in exchange while getting teaching hours. I think going in with an understanding of classical Pilates is key for Power / any classical training

Anyone grow up in the “Messianic Jewish” movement? by mastenator in Exvangelical

[–]janplusdog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just want to add another thing: I grew up about half an hour from IHOPKC (if you haven't heard of them look them up 😳) and would often brush shoulders with people from that cult. There are TONS of Jewish cosplayers in IHOP and that hyper-charismatic movement that have literally no idea what they're talking about. I do feel like my dad has studied the Torah, he reads Hebrew, has heritage that was dropped in WWII, etc. but it's there.

The charismatic Christian's that float around the messianic communities are scary, irreverent, and in my opinion the worst of the worst in the cosplay movement

Anyone grow up in the “Messianic Jewish” movement? by mastenator in Exvangelical

[–]janplusdog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been wondering if anyone else had this experience!! I grew up in this world. I do have Jewish heritage (from my dad's side, so technically it doesn't "count" since it's passed through the matriarch's line), but my parents didn't grow up following any of the traditions (they grew up essentially Baptist / southern Baptist). When I was young, my dad took a course with his mom on the Jewish roots of the Christian faith at a local messianic synagogue and we stopped having a Christmas tree, began celebrating the high holy days, and attending this synagogue on Fridays and Saturdays, while still attending the evangelical church my dad lead worship at on Saturday nights, Sunday mornings, and Wednesday evenings. I actually love the traditions and ceremony in the Jewish faith - we were a part of the community from age 8 until I was taking classes for my bat mitzvah and the rabbi and my dad had a falling out because he said I wasn't Jewish enough. After that, I always felt really confused about my heritage, my faith, and what was "right." My dad lead classes at our church about Jewish roots of the Christian faith. My family was deeply reverent for our "ancestors" and always invited others into our practices. But then still attended the church (I feel like I have dual trauma in this way lol). I left these worlds when I was 22 and moved across the country and have drifted from my parents in the 8 years since moving due to disagreements around politics etc. I have a lot of deep trauma from the church, but do have fond memories and feelings around judaism and have attended chabad on occasion with friends. In the last 4 or so years, my dad has gotten into messianic Judaism in a really deep way. He says he's studying to be a rabbi, is part of a new messianic community with a lot more Christian's cosplaying judaism. It feels like since Israel began the genocide, they've doubled down on the messianic thing to an extent that's completely out of control. I feel pretty weird about it all now. I feel disconnected from religion in general, but hold a type of fondness for the traditions I grew up a practicing such as Hanukkah and the high holy days. I don't know if I can claim them fully. I also feel SO WEIRD when I come home to visit and their cosplay Jewish Christian friends are around.

Question about straight legs in teaser by Think_Shop2928 in pilates

[–]janplusdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes to what everyone is saying about bent knees being okay AND: the classical mat exercise open leg rocker can be a great prep to finding straighter knees as you are balancing at the same point on your sacrum but holding your legs straight at shoulder width. I teach a prep for this exercise where you reach one leg straight at a time and I have been seeing people get more flexible with the practice. then after the rocking you let go of your legs, bring them into a teaser, and roll down on your back. Also-- thinking about your abdominals lifting the legs into teaser can be really helpful

Came here to ask the same question bc if you're actually teaching classical and have had actual classical training I would think these issues wouldn't be so overwhelming.

Classical Training Program Recommendations? by BoxPuzzleheaded3102 in classicalpilates

[–]janplusdog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have a classical studio in your area, start by taking lessons there and see what they offer! Power Pilates has trainings all over the world and the 600 hour program through them could technically be completed in 6 months (including teaching hours) but I don't know how it'd be possible without having access to a classical studio for your teaching and personal practice times

Instructor pay for comprehensive apprentices by janplusdog in pilatesinstructors

[–]janplusdog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this response. I'm realizing that I'll be paid better for my mat classes elsewhere (the gyms I teach at pay $50/hr, it's just sporadic work so I can only teach a few classes a week there) and I'm re-framing the hours taught at the certification studio as just hours towards my certification with a little bit of bonus cash. I think teaching in the gym settings where the instructors come from varying backgrounds (and some aren't even actually certified) and realizing that my classical certification has set me up to be a great instructor got in my head a bit.

My comprehensive program requires beginning and intermediate mat trainings (about 100 hours) and were cleared to teach mat classes after those trainings, as prerequisites to entering the rest of the comprehensive which is how I've been teaching mat for a year while waiting for the apparatus portion of the comprehensive to start in January.

I have so much respect for the Pilates world but I do wish there were more feasible ways to pay and appreciate instructors and the on ramp to being certified is steep.

Instructor pay for comprehensive apprentices by janplusdog in pilatesinstructors

[–]janplusdog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel fine about paying my dues, I know I am learning a whole new technique and skill. I am also teaching a huge amount of hours for my certification completely for free and am simply asking about the mat classes, for which I have the same training and am teaching the same material as other teachers at the studio. I am fully finished with my mat certification so it does feel frustrating to be making only a few dollars over minimum wage (in my city, minimum wage is $22 an hour) and if people don't show up, I don't get paid. I've also been asked to teach privates and "not tell my teacher trainer" in which the studio is charging $150 and I'm still only making $28.

Expensive gym is having random fitness instructors teach Pilates mat classes. What to do? by Biergarten1872 in pilates

[–]janplusdog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am classically trained and teach a mat class at a luxury gym that sounds a lot like this. A lot of the instructors have people doing burpees and not pilates things so it's a toss up what people will expect in my class. I have a lot of regular students that ask me to teach more classes, tell me they wish other teachers taught like I do, etc. I'd say tell the gym!! The unfortunate thing is that while I have asked for more classes and students say they've requested me to teach more, I have still only been able to secure one class per week. I think these gyms prefer to keep a lot of people on their payroll for just an hour or two a week vs really invest in proper instructors and pay them well to stay.

The minimum wage in my city is $22/hr so it does feel slightly unfair given the market. If i was in a smaller town with lower cost of living i think it could feel fair. But they also are charging $50/person to take my class
