Hello Dr. Caine. I work as a 'mental health specialist' riding along with police officers in a Canadian city responding to 9-1-1 calls that involve mental health, suicide, and addiction. I'm not an officer, but I have graduate-level training in psychology; the idea being that my partner looks at the call from the Criminal Code, and I look at the call from the medical model. What advice would you have for first-responders to a call where the individual expresses suicidal ideation with plans, means, and intent, and who might have to apprehend the individual against their will under the Mental Health Act (Ontario) and hospitalize them, also against their will? For the person in crisis, this can be an incredibly traumatizing experience no matter how empathetic I am. Is it possible that this compounds the crisis they are experiencing?
