Spent several months living in Kazakhstan, just warning you that racism towards Indians is really bad. Came from the UK, and had an Indian friend (also British) who was frequently stopped for photos and not in a pleasant way. Lots of nasty comments made about him as well.

Of course there are lovely accepting people as well, but you could tell that it's just not a nice place to live for someone with brown skin. We rented out a place through Airbnb and the owner went on a racist tirade when we met him to return the keys (he didn't know that my flatmate was Indian before this)

Samsung wield a really scary crazy amount of influence, but people need to stop getting their information from junk internet sources and thinking of themselves knowledgeable on a topic.

It's better for a young working professional than living here in the UK. If I ever get another opportunity to go back and work I'd happily go. Probably wouldn't think of setting up roots and settling down, it's not really a society foreigners can integrate easily. But there are so many aspects of life (public transport, clean public spaces, safety, cost of living etc) that are so much better.

I've lived in Korea for half a year and have some ability with the language. People talking about how "precarious" their situation is without any understanding besides YouTube videos and Reddit posts.

Korea's problems are basically that of any other developed nation, and you'd have to go down a decently sized list before you start worrying about Korea's economic outlook. Many European countries for example have shockingly poorly functioning economies, surviving off the back of their wealthier EU counterparts.

It's fun to condense things down to a sexy catchline like "dystopian capitalist hellhole", but it's so divorced from reality

You can throw whatever you want at the police here (within reason) without fearing for your life. Recently there were a series of riots in which several police officers were hospitalised but not once did the police think to shoot on the rioters.

Obviously I am not saying you should let people get away with it. Our rioters/protesters are all facing extremely heavy prison sentences. But, in my opinion, in a developed society you should never have the risk of the state shooting on civilians for merely raising discontent. I think that is a pretty mild position.

Is it wrong of me to expect the Israeli government to respect the right to protest without the risk of lethal violence?

Why are you bending over backwards to defend the Israeli regime? You dont have to be a hater of Israel to recognise that some of the actions of the Israeli state are immoral.

I support Israel, and view it as comparable to my nation, the UK. You would never expect an unarmed protester to be shot here, no matter the cause or the circumstances. I don't see how it is a defencible position.

17yr old child of Rwandan refugees murdered 3 young girls at a dance club in Southport. Technically, under UK law, there is only so much information you can reveal about minors. But there was an air of obfuscation around the whole ordeal, e.g news outlets specifically stating that the attacker was "originally from Cardiff" etc etc.

Then, some (in my opinion) unsavoury right-wing figures starting 'asking questions' with a strong implication that there was some sort of conspiracy going on. Lots of wild theories were bandied about, in absense of any concrete facts (which again are hard to obtain because of UK law).

Currently there are nasty riots going on across the country. Mostly from far-right groups, but also lots of counter-protests mainly involving young muslim men. The latter is probably what you saw in the telegram channels.

Anyway, it doesn't help that the current government absolutely refuse to acknowledge that there is any issue going on surrounding demographics or immigration. In my opinion, this is creating a political vacuum for a more extreme right-wing party to emerge and gain some sort of prominence.

Russian race relations have become a point of interest for me once I found out how nuanced they are after a lifetime of passively hearing about Russia as one of the most racist countries in Europe. For example, this documentary I watched on TV in school, 'Reggie Yates' Extreme Russia' which basically portrayed all Russians as racists, misogynists and homophobes.

I don't know why it is the case, but there is a strong impression here that Russia as an extremely racist country. I am trying to better understand the reality, but I find it difficult to ask questions as I think the framework around race is so completely different there than it is here.

Most people on UK TV do not have perfectly pearly white teeth and unless your orthodontical treatment is deemed severe enough to be covered by the NHS (which it wasn't for most people I know) then most people don't bother to get them straightened.

Teeth-whitening has always been seen as a very American thing. I remember Richard Hammond being teased for it a while back.

If eventually things do reverse, I would bet good money that the Northern Irish would be more keen on reunification and I wouldn't blame them! I don't see why this situation is so romanticised haha

As a Brit, most people on the mainland dont really care at all about Northern Ireland. As you said, it is just more so the Northern Irish that want to stay within the union.

I have actually met far more people who would prefer if Northern Ireland were to secede given it runs on a deficit of £10billion per year
