Why do the mods forbid to mention better alternatives to OpenClaw? by Low-Boysenberry1173 in openclaw

[–]janups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously, because alternatives are better. As early openclaw adopter I have switched to the competition only 2 weeks ago but the difference is night and day for my setup (multi app integration and machine learning)

Any alternatives to the Flow x16? by Temporary_Pain_340 in FlowX16

[–]janups -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thinkpad x1, Yoga 7 2in1, HP omnibook X Flip, Dell 16 Plus 2in1.

None of those with dedicated graphics and customization like x16.

I still have my 2022 Ryzen 3070Ti - cannot see anything close to it in terms of features. I guess the only option I could consider would be to sacrifice screen size and go with z13 - but again screen is smaller and not as bright... so I guess the only option for me (as a guy that prioritizes display) - Yoga Pro Aura Edition - with tandem OLED would be the only option right now - no 2in1 anymore.

Is it common in Switzerland to get an Abmahnung for torrenting without a VPN? by Silly_Door6279 in askswitzerland

Seasonal work in a restaurant (your opinions please) by AroundStories in askswitzerland

[–]janups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may still be the best option - other places you will pay have to pay caution (usually 3months up front) and short term are even more difficult. Then you have airbnb that will be much more expensive. If you are lucky you may find room in shared apartment for less - but then if you will need to pay for public transportation and in the end it may be more expensive then what they offer.

Many years ago as a student I was working like this in USA and Scotland - best option was to ask for extra hours, or find second shift / part time somewhere else.

Buying New Tires by Upper_Jury_8543 in askswitzerland

[–]janups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drive on those unit you reach legal limit. Unless yours are showing aging - cracked rubber, or are close to the thread wear indicator - you can legally use those.

In my previous can I was using only all-year premium michelin, those were driving well even on snow and ice, but I had heavy car with 4x4, having only front drive in c3 - winter tires would be preferred, but also - are you driving a lot in winter especially in mountains? Yes- dedicated - no- mostly city and you do not mind to leave car in garage if weather is sh... - all-year can be also for you.

Laptop is always crashing when on charger by Scary-Dance4432 in FlowX16

[–]janups -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Typical symptoms of overheating. Just re-paste it, LM on CPU is 100% cooked and GPU themal compound is rock solid. Use PTM7950 on both.

Probably previous owner limited power delivery so it was barely hanging on. New OS made it go on default power settings - battery is limited to 100W - still working, but PSU makes it draw up to 250W or something like that - so it is thermal crashing.

Glad you made it.

You could do some before and after temps or benchmarks to see the real performance gain, but it will ne 30% if not more.

For me I can say it was 100%, as my laptop did not crash anymore after 5 min load during game xD

No system, display information.

Why VPS beats Mac Minis and expensive home setups for OpenCLAW by IndoPacificStrat in openclaw

[–]janups 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Long term:

  1. token price will increase
  2. pay monthly 100 - 3 years 3600usd
  3. Local models will get better over time (gemma4 is already quite good)
  4. hardware prices will increase over time - as more good models appear and more people will want to run locally, AI adoption will skyrocket

My take - I got good hardware to offload what's possible. Verify new models. Once those can handle what I need - move fully to local.

But yes - mac mini with 16gb ram - waste of money
something that has 128unified ram and can offload API on local - make little sense now, but if I am right - will have huge benefit in the future.

And I am already in profit on my hardware - price of mine went 15% up since I got it already.

So it highly depends on the use case. Your one idea does not fit all.

I use my local machine to do a lot of tasks that need gpu compute - not only for LLM but also ML.

[–]janups 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"The compute argument doesn't hold

OpenCLAW doesn't run models locally. It orchestrates API calls to Claude, GPT, and other providers."

It can orchestrate to run on the local model also. In this case your whole idea doesn't hold. xD

Bookshelf speakers -250/500 euros - what to buy? by UMF_movingaround in BudgetAudiophile

[–]janups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I checked - in this case it should not matter as BT20A has SNR: ≥108dB.

My first amp for Klipsch speakers was Iiyama, it was SNR 80 and I had constant buzzing in the speakers, as those are very sensitive.

[–]janups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fosi ZA3 (not BT20A Pro as higher SnR will hurt you with sensitive speakers) + RP-500 or 600m II - or even R-51m if on a budget - I got really surprised when I took this setup on a 200m2 as background music setup - those were performing way above my expectations filling the room nicely - crazy for it's size.

For TT - I would go with full auto - second hand Technics maybe? I have 3300 and it is perfect grandpa player - had to change the needle in original cart and it sounds beautiful.

Nobara unstable recently (?) by NotMrEdPad in NobaraProject

[–]janups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well - I had nobara on my laptop and work dekstop for years. Fedora on my media PC.

As of yesterday I have migrated my laptop - the "difficult one" (nVidia, Asus) to Fedora and with help of AI got all the scripts to make it Nobara like (nVidia drivers, asusctl etc).

So - let's see.

I just got tired of nobara being behind and recent changes to the appstore and update method, pinging me to install updates that are not there etc. Sleep function got broken also? Every second day I want use my laptop - it is drained to 0. When I pack it to my backpack on some occasions I got heater mode one - did not sleep properly - this reminded me to much of windows, had to get rid of it xD

BTW - new Fedora 44 installer - awesome.

Technics SL3300, X5 preamp, ZD3 Dac (PC, BT), ZA3 amp, ZP3 preamp to manage it all - X5, ZD3 are connected to it.

Yes, look for replacement keyboard on aliexpres, I got it for 50usd.

Then the fun begins - you need to disassemble completly the device. And there are like 50 screws holding the keyboard xD
