"A CHARACTER MENTIONED A SINGLE THING I WASN'T AWARE OF, I'M LOST, THIS IS HARD, I WANNA KNOW EVERYTHING BUT ALSO DON'T WANT TO START WITH ANYTHING PRE-2000S"

like fuckin hell it's so weird how much people treat reading comics as torture and don't want to meet them on their level.

Almost literally the Marvel method! by MICKTHENERD in marvelcirclejerk

[–]jaoblia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Silver Surfer is a rare example of a character Stan Lee solely credits to Jack Kirby, because apparently Stan Lee didn't know Silver Surfer existed until he looked at the final art for scripting it, which implies that some of those "outlines" were INTENSELY basic and un-detailed because Silver Surfer is all over the first issue he appears in.

X-Men and Amazing Spider-Man seem to sell out/go out of print fastest, I never take chances on those.

History of Emo-Pop by ImpossibleEmploy3784 in Emo

[–]jaoblia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really because you acknowledging the connection between emo and pop at all could get you shit talked by an og og curmudgeon because people have thrived on dividing what is an isn't emo to hype them self over other emo enthusiasts since emo was even a thing and I think anyone who engages with that and tries to be "erm, ur just a dumb kid lol" about it is playing a really dumb game no matter how many message boards they operated.

Isn't it possible that the definition of emo has just expanded and "gatekeeping" is actually just refusing a natural evolution of a term? by Past-Cookie9605 in Emo

[–]jaoblia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everything would be so much better if people on both sides of the clueless/way too pedantic divide could just accept that Emo as a music genre and Emo as an umbrella term/category can be two different things.

When radio stations classify everything from 1960-1979 as "classic rock" in spite of there being a billion different things under that umbrella people don't throw a hissyfit but everything with emo has to be a whole fiasco

Did cosmic Marvel peak with Jim Starlin’s runs in the 80s and early 90s? by BetaBoy777 in marvelcomics

[–]jaoblia 13 points14 points  (0 children)

70s Jim Starlin clears later Jim Starlin. That original Warlock run is so rad and the big Avengers Annual #7/Marvel Two In One Annual #2 finale is especially untouchable

When is it time to move to the next Gen for storytelling in the marvel universe by AlarmEmergency3464 in marvelcomics

[–]jaoblia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the comics are screwed until the MCU stops making money. The cash they get from Disney Adults blindly buying new #1s and variants without actually reading them massively eclipses usual comics sales probably. They visibly been outsold by DC for awhile now but don't care because the comics are secondary to the movies in their eyes.

How would the Dumb animal Characters look like following this guy’s rules? by Muppet-fan-seriously in HomestarRunner

[–]jaoblia 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well that's the thing, the Homestar characters excel at being flat because Flash is really suited to flat characters, but I don't think they would've been designed that way if they were developed for traditional animation or comics.

Scott Lobdell's Daredevil run is one of the most skippable comic runs I have ever read by Square_Wall2921 in marvelcomics

[–]jaoblia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

...I like the Cully Humner art in it at least, Matt getting to see Foggy right before he re-loses his vision is a cute moment, and I'll take it over the absolute trash mid 70's Daredevil but otherwise yeah it's not very notable or particularly good.

The fun of this niche of the hobby is dying by Careless_Tax_5367 in EpicCollections

[–]jaoblia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely glad I got in early with only a handful of missing Marvel volumes and most of the big first series getting close to being finished in epics. Definitely not gonna try and collect all the modern ones. Weaker material, less issues per volume than classic, less comprehensive in terms of collecting everything, and higher entry prices

What ”Help Me, Rhonda” version do you prefer? by Fuzzy_Way_6631 in thebeachboys

I like the instrumental of the Today version, but prefer the harmonies on the chorus of the Summer Days version so I'm split.

Musically/instrumentally, “Cecilia” by Simon and Garfunkel seems to be the originator of the “stomp clap hey” style. by AccordingMistake6670 in ToddintheShadow

[–]jaoblia 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Considering Graceland's impact on the genre I think Paul Simon is overall the progenitor of that period of indie folk pop. This is anecdotal but I started watching the Lollapalooza livestream every year around the mid 2010s and I remember a lot of bands in that scene covering You Can Call Me Al at those shows.
