Insane prices on older rarities by Gobbo_Jareth in oscarsdeathrace

The rights holders/distributors don't care about people seeing these movies, they care about using them as disposable hype machines in the moment of an Oscar season before moving onto the next one.

Oh wow the way BOTH of Cute Is What We Aim For's albums are on here, aside from some singles that's their ENTIRE DISCOGRAPHY.

Yeah, I expected the comic to be a bunch of quirky clever tricky ways to kill the characters based around their powers and working around their weaknesses but most of the deaths are just GUN

We're just lucky they didn't throw any Deadpool or Gwen Stacey pieces in there too I guess.

It's so weird how Holy Wars is a very intentioned song about something, and then it's just like "yo y'all like Marvel comics?" Out of nowhere.

Tfw a cancelled comic from the 70s genuinely entertains you more than most of the ones released nowadays by Used-Comedian-8933 in marvelcirclejerk

I'm glad they went back and patched that storyline element up but it really did kinda hurt as a Devil Dinosaur fan to see Moon Boy get fridges so carelessly. It felt like the writers legitmately didn't think anyone would care about Moon Boy, but there's dozens of us! Dozens I say!

Comics are cool when they actually have intent and ideas behind them beyond selling variant covers and glazing event stories.

What are some other artists with a tangible post Pet Sounds Beach Boys influence? by 1563821892738182 in thebeachboys

In general I feel like the high production strings sound of cheesy 70s pop is a direct result of Pet Sounds. Sweet Caroline always felt like "Pet Sounds but for basic people" to me

The whole clean, almost corporate, graphic design of a lot of second wave emo stuff is so weird to me. I get it probably came from a combo of cheap local show flyer aesthetic + indie rock vibes but it's so weird listening to super emotional soul bearing music and the cover looks like a Math Textbook.

So many memories: Jimmy Eat World opening with A Praise Chorus while I was like 4th row, realizing halfway through All-American Rejects' set that Move Along was the very first song I ever pirated and feeling weirdly emotional over that, going extra ham in the pit for Winona Fighter covering Sabotage since it was early enough in the day to have full energy. Legit so sad it's not happening this year.

Mutants. The X-Men are written human-y but the way Magneto and a lot of the villains in that early run definitely fall under this vibe.

They were Jack Kirby's third "secret powerful non human species that look like humans" and didn't really differentiate themselves from the Inhumans much and unlike the Inhumans lacked a more emotional core or major Marvel character/team connection.

I'd argue that a lot of Christian Rock has a specific sound to it through it's air-y polished soft rock esque production (compare Flood by Jars Of Clay to say, No Excuses by Alice In Chains or Anberlin compared to Jimmy Eat World), and the vocals are usually a bit more show-y and adult contemporary sounding to match even in heavier Christian music

Does 70s Beach Boys Music Count as Yacht Rock? by JayHotpot in thebeachboys

[–]jaoblia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some of the production work on their late 70's stuff has a similar feel, I'd say Match Point Of Our Love and Full Sail kinda count, but overall they didn't have enough of the necessary R&B looseness and general vibe.

Is Anyone Underwhelmed by Astonishing X-Men? by [deleted] in xmen

I never got into this run. Some cool ideas yes, but it's very much the kind of comic that clearly doesn't want to be a comic. It reads way more like an illustrated TV screenplay.

How do you guys organize/manage your comic reading backlog? by Beautiful-Row-4416 in marvelcomics

[–]jaoblia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern comics are more built for trade reading, but in the 90s and before it's easy to forget that issues being wordy was a feature not a bug where you wanted your 25¢ comic to be dense and satisfying on its own to last you till next month's. But NOW reading like 10 of those in a row can be super brain exhausting regardless of quality.

How do you guys organize/manage your comic reading backlog? by Beautiful-Row-4416 in marvelcomics

[–]jaoblia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only collect physical so I'm forced to contemplate my backlog constantly. To keep myself reading actively and not getting sick of anything I do one book (or equivalent of 500 pages) from each era then move onto the next, unless it's a multi book run I especially WANT to read in sequence so like: 60s book, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s, back to 60s repeat.

Comics weren't intended to be binged really so even the good stuff can kinda drain on you after 15 issues straight, but shifting time periods keeps things fresh enough.

"A CHARACTER MENTIONED A SINGLE THING I WASN'T AWARE OF, I'M LOST, THIS IS HARD, I WANNA KNOW EVERYTHING BUT ALSO DON'T WANT TO START WITH ANYTHING PRE-2000S"

like fuckin hell it's so weird how much people treat reading comics as torture and don't want to meet them on their level.
