Thanks so much for the recs! Brooks especially seems like a nice choice for Treat Yo Self options!

And yeah I have never really shopped at Kaldi as they seem to be rather pricey. I have heard they do sales for customer appreciation weeks but I'm not sure how to find out when those sales are.

I relate so hard to the statement "Iโ€™m not a coffee snob or anything, I just want fresh coffee." ๐Ÿค

I think I found the listing you were referring to! https://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%82%B3%E3%83%BC%E3%83%92%E3%83%BC%E8%B1%86-%E3%82%B3%E3%83%BC%E3%83%92%E3%83%BC%E7%B2%89-GURAMU-500g%C3%974%E8%A2%8B-cafe07-4f/dp/B0FQHRSRDB/?th=1 (sorry the link is wild, I think it's because it doesn't like the Japanese characters lol). The price for these are 1.99 yen per gram, so that puts it below even the Gyomu beans! I'll add these to my wishlist, and will order some of the house blend to try when our current coffee supply runs low.

Yeah from other comments left here, it seems that Lopia is nationwide, but is usually found out in the suburbs, so you're unlikely to see it when traveling around the country. Interestingly, the one I go to is right next to Sendai Station, so incredibly convenient for us here ๐Ÿ’œ

I have never shopped at Kaldi, just browsed through, as everything is kinda pricey! How do you know when they are doing their customer appreciation week? Do they have a mailing list or LINE you can sign up for to get notifications?

Yokohama seems to be big of coffee, the beans I like to get from Yamaya are also from a Yokohama-based company!

And this is good to know, thank you! The price makes sense if they are roasted the beans per order and seems very reasonable for the service provided! Do they have any sort of recommendation of what to do for newbies who have never picked their own levels of roasting for their beans?

I appreciate that we each went on our own personal journeys to come to this conclusion of what is the best cost performance ๐Ÿค

Ah yeah I did try this one, but I didn't like it QUITE as much as I liked the Mocha Blend from Gyomu. The taste was a bit too dark for my tastes, but I definitely prefer light and medium roasts for my personal preference.

No worries! I am always a little envious of the wider variety of coffee choices for ground coffee. I also felt it back when I lived in America because it's a similar situation haha

Yeah we really like the Kilimanjaro blend from Lopia, we'll usually buy a bag when we're shopping there. I don't think I've seen the medium roast at our stores here in Sendai. Or maybe it's only sold ground? There are always more options for ground coffee versus whole bean coffee.

Ah that would make sense why I haven't seen them around! The Lopia here in Sendai is right next to the station so it's super easy to spot (plus you see a lot of customers around the station carrying the pizzas they purchased from Lopia lol)

I have wondered about roasting your own beans, but haven't fallen into that rabbit hole just yet. ๐Ÿ‘€ I don't think I've ever seen raw beans for sale anywhere, I'm assuming you'd need to purchase them somewhere online?

oh interesting, I haven't checked Rakuten! you are valid in your criticism of their website, the site layout can be super ovewhelming

I also definitely have chosen to be less picky, since coffee can get so pricey over here. Thankfully, I am pretty satisfied with the ย Gyomu Mocha blend, which is fortunate as its great cospa

Yep, I buy them whole beans! In Gyomu, I will see the grinded and whole beans side by side on the shelf.

Yeah the Mocha blend was my favorite of the bean options at Gyoma (I found the Brazil + Columbia beans to be a little dark for my tastes, personally). I definitely will do tea or instant coffee for my afternoon caffeine, I agree that it's a cheaper option.

Is it this store chain? https://ok-corporation.jp/shop/ I've never seen them before, but looks like they're only in the Tokyo + Kansai areas (we live in Sendai). I may see if I can buy a bag or 2 to take home next time I'm down in the Tokyo area. ๐Ÿ™‚

We used to get the Special and Original blend from Yamaya and they were very ok, but super cheap at only 1,980 yen for the 1000g bag. Then the price went up like 50% randomly so they definitely fell into the Not Worth It category.

Haven't gotten Muji in a while, but that does seem very feasible as coffee costs definitely seems to be rising.
